About the awards

The David Gemmell Awards is an annual event that recognises outstanding achievements in fantasy fiction.

So, has anyone read any of the books on the shortlists? Are there any authors/books you think should have made the shortlist but didn't? Who will you be voting for?

The winners will be announced on 13 June 2014. :)

Oh, and did I mention that the winner of the Legend awards receives an axe? An actual AXE?

I've given it some thought and finally voted for . . .

Best Novel - Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

Best Debut - Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan

Best Cover Art - again, Promise of Blood, because I think it's awesome:

^^  It looks like George Lucas getting ready to lop the heads off some Jar Jar Binks haters  :giggle2:

I voted for Emperor of Thorns for Best Novel, and She Who Waits for best cover art.  Haven't read any of the debuts.  Blood Song should have been on there.

:giggle2: Thanks, Steve, now I'm stuck picturing that character as George Lucas every time I read the books!

I'm surprised She Who Waits didn't make the shortlist for best novel - it's a fantastic read. I'm also astounded that The Grim Company made any shortlist whatsoever - I thought it was a bloody awful book.

I'm guessing Sanderson will walk away with the Legend award since it's the last time WoT will ever be nominated. What do you think?

I'm hoping Sanderson will just walk away full stop :giggle2:

Voted for The Republic of Thieves :) Doubt it will win though, especially not against WoT... even though it should  :giggle2:

x

I had real trouble choosing between The Daylight War and A Memory of Light. In the end I went for the latter, because I enjoyed that one slightly more.

We've basically all evened out the scores, then! :giggle2:

I really must give the Wheel of Time series a go at some point . . .

  • 1 month later...

So, the winners have been announced! :)

  • Ravenheart Award (best cover art) - Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

  • Morningstar Award (best debut novel) - Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan

  • Legend Award (best novel) - Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

Well-deserved, I think. Promise of Blood is a great debut novel, and Emperor of Thorns is (I feel) a stunning end to a fantastic trilogy. :)
