The awards' self-declared mission is to raise public awareness of the fantasy genre, celebrate the history and cultural importance of fantasy literature, appreciate & reward excellence in the field, and to commemorate the legacy of David Gemmell and his contribution to the fantasy genre. You can visit the website here. There have been some fantastic winners since the awards began in 2009, including Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Brent Weeks, Helen Lowe, and Andrzej Sapkowski. I voted for Emperor of Thorns for Best Novel, and She Who Waits for best cover art. Haven't read any of the debuts. Blood Song should have been on there. I'm surprised She Who Waits didn't make the shortlist for best novel - it's a fantastic read. I'm also astounded that The Grim Company made any shortlist whatsoever - I thought it was a bloody awful book.
