Ooops I reread the Somerset Maughan thread and you have seen the movie. The twist in the end was incredible, I never saw it coming.

Hi Charm, how are you? I spent last night with Dexter I really thought that nothing in those books could surprise me anymore because I've seen so much already, but boy was I wrong. There was probably the most grotesque thing I've ever heard of in that book.
So I guess you've been warned. There are some really appalling stuff there but if you can survive that, then you're in for a treat Darkly Dreaming Dexter is the first novel. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the info, I'll see if Knots and Crosses is available in my library!
You're so lucky to have met a writer whose work you enjoy so much! That's not very likely to happen to me, as I mostly read foreign novels and foreign writers don't tend to visit Finland

Yeah I noticed in some thread that you were going to go see him I was at the library the other day going through the English lit section and I noticed a massive row of Rankin's books and I thought of you I've never tried his books, maybe I should give him a go? What's the first novel in his Rebus-series?

Well how could anyone resist cuddling a cat like that? I don't have any pets of my own, but that's because I'm allergic to cats and dogs I'm such a dog person, I've always wished for a golden retriever. I like cat's a lot, too. I'm always "stalking" for other peoples dogs and cats cause I can never have my own; there's a lot of dogs living in my neighborhood and whenever I hear barking, I go to the windows and see what they're up too

Aww, thanks I can't say yours is pretty, but I can say that it is pretty handsome! That's a new one of Ian Rankin isn't it, this picture is so much better. In the other one he looked older, this one shows he's actually quite young and not bad to look at

We were utterly shocked as well by what happened yesterday, I can't even begin to describe it. What's more, it was only about 11 months ago when the last school shooting in Finland took place. It just doesn't seem possible that something like this could happen in Finland, which has supposedly been a safe country to live in so far.
I live in the Eastern part of Finland and the shooting happened in Kauhajoki which is in the West, so it wasn't close to where I live. I'm also lucky that I don't have any relatives or friends in that area.

Then you will just have to come back for more some day, it's as simple as that! I have no doubt I'll love Britain, I've wanted to visit for so long. I'll just have to find a job there somewhere and sort things out. Scotland might be nice too, but I'm thinking it might be a bit too hard trying to understand their accent :/

Oh you've actually been to Finland, great! Autumn's here and it's really pretty out there, with the tree leaves colouring. Soon they'll drop though and it'll get really dark. One either loves or hates the autumn here, there's no middle way
I've never travelled much, I've only done the typical ship cruises from Helsinki to Stockholm, and two years ago I spent one month in Denmark. But next year I'm coming to Great-Britain for 2-3 months to work, I'm pretty excited about that! I can't wait to hit the secondhand book shops

I've heard good things about Erlend Loe in so many other forums but for some reason I've never given his books a try. I think Fakta om Finland sounds interesting, I'll add that to my TBR It's great to have someone in here who also reads Finnish and other nordic novels, I've been neglecting that area of literature for a while now and it would be nice to get reacquinted with it!
Yep, first step down, eleven to go ...
