I want to recommend the 'Song of Ice and Fire' series (George R. R. Martin), but it's awfully long. I haven't read all of the books myself yet, but there's definitely a lot of character development, and I predict a couple of characters will be 'bad-guys turned good'.
You might enjoy the 'Enders Game' series (Orson Scott Card).
It does start off with Ender as a child, but it's pretty difficult to remember that he isn't an adult anyway, and we get to see him grow up"In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training." I wouldn't pay that much if I could get a physical copy for cheaper. I always go for the cheaper option, even if only by a few pence.
I think the reason they're so expensive comes down to greed :/ (And I mean the greed of publishers & companies, not authors )
