lunababymoonchild Posted October 2 Posted October 2 (edited) I do hereby open proposals for the final Bookclub this year. I propose history, which of course incorporates historical fiction. Edited October 2 by lunababymoonchild Quote
Hayley Posted October 3 Posted October 3 I’m also definitely up for history! (Sorry for being a bit late on this too, I have some news to post later which will help to explain!) In the meantime, shall we go ahead with history? Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted October 3 Author Posted October 3 I didn't mean to rush you, I just had a thought and posted it. History is fine with me (oddly) Quote
Hayley Posted October 3 Posted October 3 I know you didn’t mean it in a rushing way @lunababymoonchild, don’t worry . I think, with the initial positive reaction and no objections so far, we should push ahead with history! As always, interpretations of the theme are welcome. You can read fiction, non-fiction, poetry, it just needs to relate to the current theme . This might become a little bit like Victober for me because I have a lot of nineteenth-century books 😅 but I’ll look through what I have and see if anything else fits in too! 1 Quote
Madeleine Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Same here Hayley, I've got a couple of Victorian crime books lined up for Victober, so will try to find something which is historical but not crime, I have a couple of books in mind which are based on real people and events. Quote

The Victorian crime books would definitely still count though! (And what are they? I might need to add them to my list 😄). I’m considering going for Doing Time by Jodi Taylor! Quote
Madeleine Posted October 4 Posted October 4 (edited) First one is the penultimate Frey and McGray, can't remember what it's called, and then "The Highgate Cemetery Murder" by Irina Shapiro. I've just done a tour of Highgate Cemetery so am well prepared for Victober now! Edited October 4 by Madeleine Quote

I’ve added The Highgate Cemetery Murder though, it sounds really good! I bet the Highgate Cemetery tour was interesting! Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted October 5 Author Posted October 5 I’ve decided on Scotland’s Untold Stories by Leonard Low. Leonard is now running The Scottish Witch Trials Museum in Fife, which I’m desperate to see, so thought I’d start with thst Quote
France Posted October 5 Posted October 5 I've just finished listening to The Good and the History by Jodi Taylor (such fun) - does that count? 3 Quote

I’d read well over half by the time I went to bed and finished it as soon as I was done with work today. As you can probably guess, I really enjoyed it! 1 Quote

George Michael, sort of - I was a huge fan and knew he was there, it's a beautifully kept plot, with his mother and sister. The main one I wanted to see was Lizzie Siddal (Pre-Raphaelite artist and poet), which I did eventually find. Lots of other big names there too, Karl Marx of course, Douglas Adams, George Eliot ( whose grave had lots of pens stuck into the earth!), Roger Lloyd Pack (Trigger from Only Fools and Horses), Michael Faraday (scientist), lots of others too. We also went into the catacombs, and saw rows of family mausoleums! Apparently they filmed some of the new Cormoran Strike TV series there, so we were told what graves to look out for in the programme. 1 Quote

Oh I’d have liked to see that one too! And George Eliot’s (I wonder when the pen idea started!?). I decided to go for some historical fiction for my next book, way back to 1348 with Company of Liars by Karen Maitland. I’ve owned this book for years. I saw it in a charity shop for £1 pre-covid and wanted to give it a try - but I couldn’t bring myself to read about a plague during a pandemic 😅. I’ve only read the first few pages but it’s definitely intriguing so far. I think it’s loosely based on/ inspired by The Canterbury Tales. Quote
Madeleine Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Douglas Adams' grave (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy author) also had lots of pens, paints and number 42s around his grave. I read Company of Liars years ago and loved it, very well-written and the plague is almost a real character. Hope you like it. 1 Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted October 13 Author Posted October 13 Started Scotland’s Untold Stories by Leonard Low, a factual book containing some of the odd and peculiar stories in the history of Scotland. Quote

Hayley Posted October 26 Posted October 26 Finished Company of Liars and really enjoyed it (somehow wasn’t expecting it to be quite as dark as it is, despite the plague theme!). I did have slightly mixed feelings about the ending but I can see why those decisions were made. Now I’m a bit stuck for what’s next! I was thinking of going for The Way of All Flesh, but then I remembered that I have The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, which I’m looking forward to! Quote
