It is often a wonder to me that children aged five and six can speak their mother tongues fluently. Alright, they probably do not know the meanings of all the long words, but they can communicate effectively with people around them. Learning a new language always seems to difficult. I have been trying to learn Georgian for months and it still sounds mostly like Klingon and their alphabet and grammar is so strange. I had a go at Japanese when I worked for a Japanese company. That was even worse. I have two perfect attendance certificates from the evening courses I attended. I can read my name but that is about it. I have had a go at quite a few languages. The ones I was best at were German and French; I studied those languages daily for years, and I still never became fluent. I have been trying to learn Latin and Old English in recent years. I can make out a bit of Latin, but it is never very long until I have to look up a word in a dictionary. Old English just does not sink in at all.
