I finished Slade House by David Mitchell as my first book for this challenge and I loved it! Very creepy and brilliantly written. It almost felt like a series of short stories, each one set in a different decade, though they're all connected to each other. Impressively, all of the characters still managed to feel real, well-developed and unique. I'd definitely recommend this one to fans of magical realism.

Great Expectations, Charles Dickens.  Marvellous!

Isn't it!? And I think it features one of the best mysteries of any Dickens book. Only part of which is 'why is Miss Havisham permanently wearing an old wedding dress?' .

So, spoiler quotes for this bit, did you guess...

Spoiler

who Pips mysterious benefactor was going to be?

I've been forgetting to post mine! Here gooes -

The Last Murder at the End of the Word -Stuart Turton (terrific!)

The Cautious Traveler's Guide to the Wastelands - Sarah Brooksn (I really enjoyed this though I don't think it's everyone's cup of tea)

Killing with Confetti - Peter Lovesey (As ever, a smooth enjoyable read)

One Good Turn - Kate Atkinson, (Just as good second time round, especially as I'd forgotten  the very last surprise.

Finished mine, disappointing overall, mostly unlikeable characters, OK for a holiday read.

I feel like some people enjoy unlikeable characters, but I’m with you, it makes me like the book a lot less!

The Puzzle Wood, Rosie Andrews. A satisfying read and very mysterious.

That’s good to hear - it’s on my wish list but I know it had some mixed reviews!

I think if the characters are well-written, and interesting, then they can be "enjoyed",but this lot were just pretty annoying!

The Case of Lady Sannox, Arthur Conan Doyle. I’m not sure this qualifies since Sherlock Holmes wasn’t involved and there wasn’t a mystery per se but I’ll leave it here in case it does qualify

I feel like it counts. It’s not a mystery in genre but it does feature something/someone who is a mystery (without giving anything of the plot away…)

Ive just started The Bullet-Catcher’s Daughter by Rob Duncan. It features someone working as a private detective, who’s been given a case to find a missing person - but with a steampunk twist 😄.

This was one of the first audio books I listened to and I loved it. Different and a fresh  approach.
