A friend of mine is going to attend the "Christening" of a ship in Bath, Maine. The ship will be named after a close relative of his. He sent me a link showing wonderful photos of the ship and a letter explaining why the ship is named after his relative. Please read in its entirety the "reason". It is what real patriotism is.

Hurricane Helena hit the U.S. pretty hard, especially the western part of North Carolina including the mountains. Some towns were completely devastated and are essentially gone. the following video is of Asheville, NC  devastation.

When accessing the video click on the second icon from the right at the bottom to see it full screen for the best viewing.

Absolutely devastating damage 😥

I saw where mules were being used to transport supplies to

cut off areas of NC. Reminded me of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.

Remember the guy, Tom Fellenbaum, that hand made my Mountain Dulcimer. He lives in "Black Mountain",  North Carolina and the town was wiped out. also the guy that hand made 4 kitchen chairs and a solid cherry rocking chair for me lived in a town called "Old Fort" and it was ruined by the hurricane both towns are not too far from Asheville. another town, Chimney Rock, they say was hit with a 30 foot high rush of water. It also, was destroyed. 😢

That's so sad, Muggle 😢

I saw this on Facebook, an unbelievable amount of rain!

'The hurricane dropped 20 inches to over 30 inches of rain in some areas… that’s an estimated 40 trillion gallons of rain.

How much is 40 trillion gallons of water?

40 trillion gallons of water is enough to fill the Dallas Cowboy’s stadium 51,000 times.

40 trillion gallons of water is enough to cover the entire state of North Carolina with 3.5 FEET of water.

40 trillion gallons of water is enough to fill 60 MILLION Olympic-sized swimming pools.

40 trillion gallons of water is 619 DAYS of water flowing over Niagara Falls.'

A little off topic:

Whan Tom Fellenbaum made my Dulcimer he lived in Black Mountain. He now lives in Old Fort. A photo of my Mountain Dulcimer, it is made from Curly Maple and Cherry.

Wow, what a beautiful instrument! I love curly maple topped guitars too. I hope its maker is safe and will be able to rebuild their home soon. It is absolutely tragic, the impact the weather is having there right now. Florida’s weather today also looked terrifying. You’re quite safe where you are though, aren’t you?

Good question - generally I try to make mental notes, so I make sure I do the review quickly before I forget!  Unless it's a really outstanding book, and then I don't have trouble remembering it.

If I may ask : those who review the books they have read - and thank you for doing so, it’s most interesting - do you take notes as you are reading for the review?

I try to but if I'm honest I usually forget until I'm almost finished with the book.

Just in case anybody needs to know: Amazon are withdrawing the ability to download Kindle e-books to your PC hard drive on 26 February this year.

That doesn't include other devices, I hope? I only read on my tablet.

I think it does. I mentioned the PC because I assume that, like me, readers have hundreds of Kindle e-books and therefore need to download them to a PC to back them up. My brother isn’t bothered about it but I am backing mine up. Amazon can take the book away if they want to, you’re buying the licence to read not the book.

I use a free program called Calibre to manage what is on my kindle and have done for years. It allows you to load ebooks from any source or any format onto a kindle or other e-reader and it also allows you to download any books off the kindle onto your computer. I believe it can also strip any DRM from an ebook but I’ve never done that so I can’t vouch for it. I’m not sure if Amazon will manage to block Calibre from being able to do this but it should work as a solution for a while at least.

This is what I’m doing but you need an add-on to strip the DRM

If you are intending just to back up books and plan to stick them back on a kindle at some point you won’t need to do any DRM shenanigans.

I know that this belongs in the TV/Entertainment thread but I wanted to post it here to get the most viewers.

Last night (Saturday) CNN broadcast a live performance on CNN of the hit Broadway show by George Clooney titled Good Night and Good luck. It was great to see a live performance again as spectacular as this one and on live TV. George Clooney was awesome in the lead role as the legendary TV announcer Edward R. Murrow. In fact all of the performers were great. If you get a chance to see a re-run of this show i strongly recommend it.

Please read the following to get a better idea of the live show.

‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ revisits history and is set to make some on Saturday. Here’s how to watch | CNN
