Needed to choose a new book to read today, so decided on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James for the English Counties challenge (Kindle freebie).  About a third of the way through, and I'm really enjoying it - I know not everyone gets on with James, but I also read Washington Square a while back, and enjoyed that too. :)

Second edit....(my brain, my brain!)  Have started The Secret History.  Love the first 12 pages. :D

You only just started it on 4.1 and already finished?! :D Wow! I take my hat off to you, it's a long book, but then again, I can imagine it being a real page turner... I know that for a fact :giggle2:

I fell off the wagon.....and bought some Kindle books for £0.99 each.

The Luminaries - Eleanor Catton

The Ocean At The End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman

Life After Life - Kate Atkinson

One Summer: America 1927 - Bill Bryson

Absolute bargains, but I'd hoped to hold out a bit longer before acquiring more books.

Hella cheap!! :D Awesome haul!

As to hoping to have held out a bit longer... Well these things happen... :giggle:

Went to the library this afternoon, and they had a book sale . Paperback were 10 books for £1

I chose

Shanghai Girls – Lisa See
The Many Conditions of Love – Fahara Zama (Never read author before, but toyed the idea previous)
The Marriage Bureau of Rich People - Fahara Zama
The Bad Girl – Mario Vargas Llosa
Lean Mean Thirteen – Jane Evanovich
Leaving Mother Lake: A Childhood at the Edge of the World – Namu and Christine Mathieu
The Darkening Glass – Paul Doherty
Making Shore – Sally Allerton
The Light Behind the Window – Lucinda Riley
The Brave – Nicholas Evans
(The bold were ones that I grabbed at, the other were just to make the 10.)

I'm not familiar with any of the books, although I have read the first Janet Evanovich book (which I liked)... But great haul! And a real bargain at that :D

I'm about a third through Dracula by Bram Stoker. Brilliant so far!! Finally, a classic that I am really enjoying!!!

So so happy you're enjoying this! It's one of my favorite classics :smile2:

I finished The Secret History last night in bed, what a great (re)read! :smile2: Soon off to bed, and I don't know what to read... Something will come along :)

I read the first 10 Janet Evanovich books, which were light and frothy, but good light reading. I think 10 paperbacks for £1 is the best bargain I'll get this year  .

Bought some ebooks yesterday :blush2: :

The Art of Racing in the Rain - Garth Stein

A guide to the good life:The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy (sounds a bit oxymoron, doesn't it?)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke

Our Mutual Friend - Dickens (free ebook)

I don't know... I think you should go back and see if you could do better! :D And then report your findings :giggle:

I did think about reading more of the Evanovich books but then I forgot about everything that had happened in the first novel and I thought I need to re-read it first... And then there are too many books, too little time! As always... Maybe some day! :)

I started reading Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops last night and it's hilarious :D

The temptation is very strong! :D . But I must not buy any more treebooks, I could be crushed under the plies of books I already have  :giggle2:

Re plot for Evanovitch books - they are exactly the same  :D  - granny goes to a funeral viewing, and tries to see the corpse usually, and they aren't without the fun without security specialist Ranger   :smile2: *drool*

Ooooh! Great haul!! I loved The Art of Racing in the Rain  I hope you enjoy it! It's on my top 20 books if not on top 10. But very high up there on the top!

And JS&MN is good, too. Haven't read the Dickens yet, myself, but always interested in Dickens.

Started The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks as my first book of 2014

x

I hope you enjoy it! I quite liked that one :)

Starting 'The Bay at Midnight' by Diane Chamberlain (as I promised chaliepud I will pass it on ;))

x

I haven't read The Bay at Midnight yet, I hope you like it :)!

x

I'm about a third through Dracula by Bram Stoker. Brilliant so far!! Finally, a classic that I am really enjoying!!! :D

x

Sounds good! I've been wanting to read Dracula for a long time (but haven't done so yet). People say the book is quite different from the many films that are out.

I started reading Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops last night and it's hilarious :D

x

I've been keeping my eye on that book, but I'll wait until there's a paperback version. It sounds pretty hilarious, glad you're enjoying it :).

After the read-a-thon I wrote a lot of reviews and wasn't sure yet what I felt like reading. I've read a few pages in Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - A Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light which I'm really excited to read, but I wasn't really feeling it yet so we have to wait and see. I also read some in a magazine. This happens now and then after the read-a-thon, I've read so much I need to slow down, or something. I do plan on doing more reading in the near future.

I think that was Pontalba who started Secret History on 4/1 Frankie not me, i just messed up the quotes that's why it looks like i said it  :blush2:

Only managed to read a few pages of the Harpole Report so far , other things getting in the way of reading again. I hope to catch up with everyone's new reading logs & stay on top of my reviews so need to organise myself a bit better

I don't know why I haven't made any reading progress this month.  I've read one, started three...finished none of that three.  The Secret History is, indeed, one of the three.  Only read 40 pages or so, and like it, I'm just not........I don't know.  I feel rather lethargic right now.  Must be the freezing weather we've had the last several days.  One more night of temps in the teens (F).  Man, oh man, is this still the South??

I hope your mojo comes back soon! It's not nice like that :(. I hope the weather clears up for you soon, I've heard it's pretty bad in some areas of the United States and Canada.

Picked up Man Belong Mrs. Queen: Adventures with the Philip Worshippers by Matthew Bayliss from the library   . It was Book of the Week on Radio 4 last week, though I hadn't listened any episodes. Synopsis is "As a bookish child with a posh accent, growing up on Merseyside in the 1980s, Matthew Baylis identified with the much-mocked Prince Philip as a fellow outsider. He even had a poster of him on his bedroom wall. Years later, as an anthropology student , Baylis learned of the existence of a Philip cult on the South Sea island of Tanna. Why was it there? " Sounds quite good  .

I've finished The Cold Dish, by Craig Johnson a - murder mystery set in Wyoming.  It's the first in a series, and there is now a tv show based on the characters (Longmire).  By sheer coincidence, that show has just started playing, so I am looking forward to watching it.  I've also read Them: Adventures with Extremists, by Jon Ronson, which was a good read.

Now reading Past the Burning Time, by Kathryn Laskey.  It's all about the witch trials in Salem in the 17th century, and so far so good.  I was actually in Salem in 2012, and thought it was a fascinating place.

As for book buying, I am trying not to go too mad, but did buy two at the weekend: Longbourn, by Jo Baker (it's Pride and Prejudice, but told from the servants' point of view), and The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult.  They were in a 'buy one, get one for £1' deal', so it was daft not to take advantage (or I'll just keep telling myself that!)

I've read more pages of Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - The Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light and am really enjoying it. It just took a bit of getting into it, because I couldn't remember what exactly happened in the last book. I could've looked it up but it's coming back to me as I'm reading this book so I think I'll be allright. I'm really enjoying reading about the characters and what's going to happen. I love this world, it's so interesting.

I've also received two books I ordered in 2013, Alan Bennett - The Uncommon Reader and Holly Smale - Geek Girl 1: Geek Girl, the latter of which has the same font as my copy of Mark Haddon - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has, so this is an instant plus as it reminds me of that book (I really enjoyed it).

I've decided to read as many WW1 books this year to commemorate the start of the War in 1914.  I'm presently reading August 1914 by Solzhenitzyn and I'm looking forward to Helen Dunmore's new book to be released next week - The Lie.  At least there is plenty of reading material out ther.

I may start a reading list for 2014 to see how(if) I can keep this up.
