Devi Posted December 17, 2012 Author Posted December 17, 2012 I just wanted to share one of my favourite readings of E.A. Poe's The Raven. I know I know, it's the simpsons, shock horror right? Â I just love the narrators voice - James Earl Jones, he reads it so well. He is probably more well known for Mufasa's voice in the Lion King. He is perfect for reading The Raven. Â Please give it a chance! Even though it is the simpsons. Â Â Quote
Kylie Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I love this clip, Devi. Some years ago, I created a file from my DVD so I could watch it on my iPod whenever I wanted. Hmm, I should check if it works as well on my iPad. Quote

Janet Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I've never watched the Simpsons but I do like this poem. Â I always thought Raven's blog on here should be called 'Quoth the Raven'! (Although I don't think he has a reading thread). Quote
Devi Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) I was going through my bookshelf double checking my books with my list here, and I came across one (so far) that I missed having! It's Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. Â That gives me P for my ABC challenge next year, which leaves Q,U, X and Y to find books for. If anyone has any recommendations for those letters, I would love to hear them. Edited December 18, 2012 by Devi Quote

julie Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Hi Devi It looks like you have everything organized and set up nicely for the coming year. I had a suggestion for a book for the Q letter -- The Quincunx by Charles Palliser . It's a whopper, but a REALLY good book. Reminds me a lot of Dickens . Â Theres one on Amazon called Yellow Birds for your Y - it's by Tim Powers. I have no clue what it's about, but it might be about yellow birds. Â Â Quote

My aim is to try and go via the first letter of the authors last name. I'll definitely add these books if I can't find authors for the letters though. Â I may even just add the books to my list in general. Edited December 19, 2012 by Devi Quote
chaliepud Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Bit of googling... How about Richard Yates, he wrote Revolutionary Road which was made into a film, he's also written a couple of others. Â Or.. Â Kevin Young writes about poetry influenced by American Jazz music, a bit more random but may interest you. Quote
chesilbeach Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 You could also try looking at www.fantasticfiction.co.uk, where they list authors alphabetically by surname, so you can browse the list of authors under each letter. Quote

Devi Posted December 25, 2012 Author Posted December 25, 2012 I got five books for christmas! I was all at once! . With synopsis from bookdepository, I received the following: Dogs Of Courage  Dogs don't just make lovable pets. They also work at an incredible number of jobs, helping humans in countless ways. From working with search-and-rescue teams to find missing persons to helping patients recover from injuries, Lisa Rogak covers the many ways in which dogs are an essential part of our world. And she tells the surprising stories of regular dogs who have gone above and beyond to help their owners - and even each other. "Dogs of Courage" reveals the heart-warming and awe-inspiring stories of these hard-working dogs, from the training they receive to the ways we honour their sacrifices and reward their years of service. Affirming what every dog lover knows, this book shows how deep a dog's loyalty and friendship can go.   The following two novels are based around the video game series called Elder Scrolls! It continues the story from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.  The Infernal City An Elder Scrolls Novel - book 1  Four decades after the Oblivion Crisis, Tamriel is threatened anew by an ancient and all-consuming evil. It is Umbriel, a floating city that casts a terrifying shadow-for wherever it falls, people die and rise again. And it is in Umbriel's shadow that a great adventure begins, and a group of unlikely heroes meet. A legendary prince with a secret. A spy on the trail of a vast conspiracy. A mage obsessed with his desire for revenge. And Annaig, a young girl in whose hands the fate of Tamriel may rest . . . .  Lord Of Souls An Elder Scrolls Novel - book 2  Forty years after the Oblivion crisis, the empire of Tamriel is threatened by a mysterious floating city, Umbriel, whose shadow spawns a terrifying undead army. Reeling from a devastating discovery, Prince Attrebus continues on his seemingly doomed quest to obtain a magic sword that holds the key to destroying the deadly invaders. Meanwhile, in the Imperial City, the spy Colin finds evidence of betrayal at the heart of the empire--if his own heart doesn't betray him first. And Annaig, trapped in Umbriel itself, has become a slave to its dark lord and his insatiable hunger for souls. How can these three unlikely heroes save Tamriel when they cannot even save themselves?  - I am really looking forward to reading the two Elder Scrolls novels next year!  These two next books I am sure you are all familiar with!  A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini Apocalypse Cow - Michael Logan  I was also super excited to finally have Apocalypse cow.  I also got some money which I intend to use on getting more books!
