  1. Not sure if anyone uses or watches this thread anymore. But I am looking for a book about WW1. I have always been interested in history. Seeing as summer is ending and the cold dark nights are drawing near, I was wanting to find a sort of (cosy read), trench warfare/story/account set during WW1?. Would like it to be non-fiction and would like a book that explains WW1 that would interest me. Wether it tells the story of a soldier and his life through the war in the trenches, or a wider account of it all, I wouldnt know what book to look for that meets my requirements. Any help to find a book like that would be much appreciated! p.s I have looked at "The First Day on the Somme: 1 July 1916". Which is about one of the most iconic battles of the war which is probably the "cosy" part of my requirements. However when I say a book about the "History of WW1" what book comes into mind? One that iwll intrugue and interest me, one that I will find fascinating and learn something from. One that explains the whole of WW1..or is there not a book that does that? Thanks
  2. Thanks for the suggestions so far, they all sound really interesting to read! For some reason I am feeling a good book to read, about WW1. Seeing as summer is ending and the cold dark nights are drawing near, I was wanting to find a sort of (cosy read), trench warfare/story/account set during WW1. Wether it tells the story of a soldier and his life through the war in the trenches, or a wider account of it all, I wouldnt know what book to look for that meets my requirements. Any help to find a book like that would be much appreciated!
  3. Thank you all so much for the recommendations, I really do appreciate the help. I think I am going to go and purchase "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Robert K. Massie as it seems to talk about the beginning of Nicholas Tsar, his life and story growing up, getting married, meeting different people, the revolution etc. Thanks again!
  4. I have always read loads of books growing up, they used to be mainly fiction books which I loved but (being 21 now) they dont interest me anymore. I have always loved history, it fascinates me so much. I watch documentaries, look it up on the internet, (and enjoy watching War movies if that counts ) My Dad also knows a lot of history as well, in which I love the facts/information he tells me. But I have only ever read one historical book in my life thus far, and that was when I was 12! The book was called "The Desert Generals" by Correlli Barnett which I enjoyed reading so much...but have never touched another history book since..until now which I am currently reading. Its called "English Civil War" by David Clark which I am finding a little boring... Can anyone recommend me some of the best history books (if thats the correct term?) of different era's? For example, the best books about WW1, WW2, Medieval (from different nations/countries), The Crusades, Rome etc. I have come across some, such as "All Quiet on the Western Front" which looks interesting, also "SPQR: A history of Ancient Rome", even "A Short History Of Nearly Everything (Bryson)" ! Now I know there could be 7-15 of the best books from WW1, or Medieval Britain (some could tell the story of a whole country, or a group of people, or only focused on 1 person (I think "The Book Thief" fits that description? ). But if you can recommend me your favorite ones (ones that you think I would enjoy), it would be much appreciated. I am going to do some research, maybe go to my local Library and ask them, but with your help it will make my decision making a little easier! Thank you for any help, appreciate it :) P.S Hopefully I have made sense, sorry for my blabbering on... :/
  5. Appreciate the help, although not what I am really looking for, does sound like an interesting read!
  6. Hey, thanks for the suggestion. Is the book about when Nicholas was born, growing up etc? I read on amazon what the book is about, and it mentions that its a emphasis of the last 18th months of his life/rule so I am not quite sure if its a really detailed last 18th months or just about a bit of everything? Also, I think I saw this at my University's Library. Is this the small book with tiny text?
  7. So a few years back I watched the Disney movie 'Anastasia' (used to watch it as a kid back int he 90's as well!). After the movie I did some research on the movie and found out that it was (sort of) based on a true story about a real Russian family/ the Romanovs. I read about Nicholas Tsar and the history behind his family on Wikipedia which I found really interesting! Then, a couple of years ago I also watched a documentary about thee family which I really liked. Then last weekend I started watching the British drama 'Victoria', which somehow triggered me to remember Nicholas 2 of Russia and what I had read and watched about them before. The Question: So, I am looking for a an interesting book to read about the Romanovs (although that dates back hundreds of years) and about Nicholas 2 Russia and his family, the bolshevik uprising, the murder of the family etc (so general information?). I have found 'Nicholas and Alexandra' but that does not seem like what I want. Any other help of recommendations are much appreciated, thanks!
