  1. The Red Room - Nicci French
  2. Wait til you get to Book 3 Dan! Good luck with the reading.
  3. Despite the bank holiday, it's been a long week!
  4. Cold and freezing up here again today, but meant to get milder.
  5. Thanks Claire and Janet - I haven't read either of the George Eliot books so may stick with those, and will probably pick another du Maurier for Cornwall, and if I get stuck at least I've got a suggested title!
  6. I didn't realise that the list of books was "set", although I've already read most of the classics - Austen, Bronte, Hardy and Jamaica Inn - so I was actually planning on reading books from my own tbr pile if no one minds? Just another way of whittling it down a tiny bit!
  7. Hope you feel better soon, how horrible for you!
  8. Pickwick Papers - Dickens
  9. Yes I've noticed it's still light til 4.00 as well, the mornings are still horribly dark though. Only been back at work 3 days and I'm already finding it almost impossible to get up!
  10. Never Look Back - Robert Goddard
  11. Kiss the Girls - James Patterson
  12. I agree with you about Game of Thrones Athena - book 3 is the best and book 5 the weakest, which is why I think I found the 5th series the weakest as well, however series 6 is great so worth catching up with it! Plus if you like book 3, then series 3 and 4 cover quite a lot of the 3rd book.
  13. I haven't actually been in any bookshops this year....yet!
  14. I think I've heard that too about ostriches burying their hands in the sand, that it is a sort of optical illusion.
  15. Yes I agree most of the characters are pretty much either good or bad, the only ones who show some sort of inner turmoil are Boromir and Aragorn, who doesn't want to be King but realises he doesn't have a choice. But pretty much everything fantasy since has been influenced somehow by LotR. The Hobbit is very much a children's book so is quite simple (from what I remember of it).
  16. Good luck with both your reading and your new job!
  17. Yes it rained here for most of NY Day but was quite mild for NYE. Cold and sunny now, but very frosty and icy in the mornings.
  18. Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner
  19. I think we can all agree with you re tbr piles and book buying Shirley!
  20. Have a great reading year Athena!
  21. I've never read Rebus either but have most of the books. Happy reading!
  22. I've watched a few episodes of Longmire but have never seen the books. Happy reading!
  23. I'd like to join the out of control tbr gang too! Happy reading to everyone in that group!
  24. Echoes - Maeve Binchy
  25. To try to read more from the tbr piles (note the plural!) To try to read more new books - at least one per month To try to keep up with series
