Hiya - don't worry, I wasn't a particularly varied reader before this place came along and changed all that. Most people here are really nice, the only person who bites is Wraith

As I think I may have mentioned before (but not recently), I don't think King's a horror writer at all, and it annoys me that he's always classified as such. Yes, he's written some horror books (vampires and ghosties, etc), but many of them seem more fantasy or thrillers to me. The book with Children of the Corn in was 'Nightshift' - some good shorts in there. If you like his shorts, you should also try: Skeleton Crew Everything's Eventual Four Past Midnight They should give you a good idea of the spetrum of Kings work (although many of his shorts are typical horror).

Wraith's left another book behind for me to read: The Gun Seller - Hugh Laurie Like the look of this one - I've had good experiences with comedians' novels in the past (David Baddiel, Robert Llewelyn, Ben Elton, et al)

Just silly little things really, difficult to explain. It felt to me like the expressions used by the characters were almost clichéd, that they were speaking in the way a 20th century person would have expected them to speak, rather than how they would actually speak. I guess I thought that the language seemed a little forced and didn't flow very well, although that's probably just because I don't normallly read historical quasi-fiction - I'm used to reading modern fiction or genuinely old fiction. Does that make sense? It was just things like: and: It's just overly sincere, and in the mind of such a sarcastic person, that's just asking for ridicule

The Stand is an awesome book - not my favourite King, but right near the top. Tried to get Dr Wraith to read it - he took one look at the publication date and said "I don't read anything publisher before 1998". Weirdo (he will read it though )

I've given up - the language had me in hysterics and I just couldn't take it seriously. I'm very immature . I've put it to one side and will doubtlessly come back to it when I'm not in such a sarky mood

The control freak in me is going mental! I received 3 new books yesterday through the post and I'm expecting another to arrive soon, they all need to be bumped to the top of my TBR pile and I'm freaking out about it! It's really weird, because I offered to read the books (they're for future projects for the forum), and I'm pleased and excited to be helping out, there's just this part of me that's thinking "you should be reading Cloud Atlas"! The 3 that arrived yesterday are: The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox - Maggie O'Farrell Small Island - Andrea Levy The Mathmatics of Love - Emma Darwin They're all very far removed from my normal reading choices (although I'm not so sure what they are at the moment - I'm just reading everything!), but I'm really looking forward to them. I've already started 'Esme Lennox' and, although I'm only 30 pages in, I'm already hooked and think I'm really going to enjoy it.
