  1. Loved On the Beach. It took me forever to read though because it was so sad that I could only bring myself to read maybe 50 pages at a time. Now I'm a few chapters into Mr. Owita's Guide to Gardening by Carol Wall and am loving that, too. I was naughty and bought another book at the bookstore today even though I already have a stack of six or seven library books to tackle. It's called Alas, Babylon. I think I might start it later tonight...
  2. One that I'm getting ready to read are Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank.
  3. I'm a little over halfway through On the Beach. It's so good, but so very sad. I can only read about 50 pages at a time.
  4. For more classic sci-fi George Orwell- 1984 Isaac Asimov - Pebble in the Sky and I, Robot For something contemporary Jason Gurley - The Dark Age
  5. Ooh...I am not a huge Stephen King fan, but I read Cell and really enjoyed it. I also found the note at the end explaining that Stephen King does not have a cell phone to be a bit ironic. Also, I'm going back a bit, but Ready Rider looks like it might be something I'd enjoy. I'll have to check it out.
  6. I love his stuff! Try The Dark Age. It's by far his best, I think.
  7. I think this is a wonderful idea! Now I just have to think of who to nominate...
  8. Athena is a speed reader. If this were a comic book, speed reading would be her super power.
  9. I am as well. I really love how the author has to make every word count and how I can become just as attached to the characters as I can in a full-length novel. I've never read the author you mentioned, but I just looked her up in the Kindle store, and she looks quite interesting. I'll have to check her out.
  10. Catfish and homemade cornbread. Yum! Maybe okra croquettes for a side?
  11. Last night I read a novella from a 99-cent six pack from the kindle store. It started with a good enough idea, but the writing was amateurish and the characters lacked real depth. For sixteen cents, I suppose it was good enough, but I don't think I'd pay to read anything else by the same author. Just came home from the library with four books: Mister Owita's Guide to Gardening by Carol Wall - memoir An Old Betrayal by Charles Finch - mystery Lexicon by Max Barry - fiction The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley - mystery I am already a quarter of the way through On the Beach by Neville Shute and just a chapter into Absolute Value by Itamar Simonson and Emanuel Rosen. Both are very good so far.
  12. The book I had requested at the library came in. I got it and three others. I think I just compounded my problem of what to read next!
  13. Hooray for an unexpected mini-vacation! I hope you have a lovely time. Congratulations! That's such exciting news. I'm so sorry to hear that. Pets are like family, especially after so many years...I'll be thinking of all of you tomorrow.
  14. Welcome and happy reading! What kind of books do you like? Do you have a favorite author or series of books?
  15. I'm sure one can find sources to support all kinds of viewpoints, especially online, but the impression that the American news media is hounding the issue of this girl's body size is a false one. As the comments circled around what was being said in the U.S. media, I had only thought it might be relevant to give the perspective of someone who lives in the country. I'm not at all questioning what you've seen, but is it possible that it's only one side of things? At any rate, regardless of shape or size, I think it's a great ensemble cast. Jim Parsons is my absolute favorite, though, and I couldn't help thinking of his character as I read The Rosie Project.
  16. I'm so sorry you're having such trouble! It certainly seems like you should be seeing more benefit after all that time. I haven't been here long enough to be familiar with your condition. Does your body not absorb Vitamin D properly?
  17. Wound up having spaghetti and meatballs instead. Delicious! My dearest made it for me, so that made it even better.
