I hate trying to find something for lunch - there's only so many days that I can eat sandwiches before I become a little bored by them!
So what was for luch today?

Ooh, I LVOE a nice omlette!
I tend to bring lunch with me to work, so I do a variety of soups & sandwiches. Last night I made a HUGE pot of my chickpea & chorizo soup, so I took a nice, crusty roll to have with a flask of that, along with a cereal bar & a small pack of dried berries with almonds to nibble on - yummy!

You need to vary things though, Inanna, or you'll get bored with it all & end up throwing in the towel. Try havnig your toast with some tasty soup - it can make all the difference & doesn't have to be calorific at all.

I just had 3 slices of fresh baguette, all with cheese, 1 with mayo/tomato, 1 just cheese and the other with pickle. I had 2 small (chinese) bowls of my homemade pepper soup with it.

Cup-a-soup and a bag of Ryvita minis, both of which I got free when I was still going to Slimming World. I'd shoved them in a drawer in work and promptly forgot all about them until I was looking for some sellotape today.
Oh, the glamour of it all!

too much pannettone for lunch!
hehe, I had to look it up. Is it any good?
Panettone (Milanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milanese): panetùn) is a typical cake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cake) of Milan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milan), Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy), usually prepared and enjoyed for Christmas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas), and one of the symbols of the town. Maltese nationals are also traditionally associated with this cake.

I like it. It is a sort of light cake (so you never realise just how much you are scoffing!) but not crumbly in nature, quite spongy in fact. Rather difficult to explain!!! It is usually sold during December and associated with Christmas for some reason.

My life is pretty drab in the food department right now -- I've a little cooler in which I take my lunch.
Today's Fare:
One sandwich on whole wheat bread -- three thin slices of ham, two thin slices of hard salami, one slice of sharp cheddar cheese and a handful of lettuce. I'm sad to say I had nothing exotic to spice things up ... I used mayonnaise.
Sour Cream and Onion Pringle's potato chips.
Six cookies called "English Tea", which I am sure are not English and have nothing to do with Tea --- but I still like 'em.
And...I've a jar of olives in my cooler, each olive is stuffed with a clove of garlic! Whoa!

It's all made by me, apart from the spelt loaf. I have a little street market near me and there's a stall that sells fancy breads from all over London, and amongst the great things they do is a spelt loaf.
Recently I've been trying to cut back on the bread stuff, and have been making tabboulleh or a garlicky puy-lentil and bacon salad or things like that.

Okay... this thread is reminding me how hungry I am!!!
On a related note... for a long while, I've been curious to know what lunch is called in other parts of the world. Here, it's called either lunch or dinner or supper, depending on where you grew up. What's it called where you all live?
Michelle
18th September 2007, 18:03
For me, 'lunch' is a mid day snack, 'dinner' is an evening meal. If I do it the other way around, we would have midday 'dinner', and 'tea' would be a snack in the evening. As clear as mud?!
KathleenMacIver
18th September 2007, 18:24
Yup, clear as mud! I call midday meal lunch, and evening meal dinner... but my mother-in-law calls lunch dinner, and dinner supper... and my kids STILL haven't gotten it figured out! They get soooo confused when she says "we just ate dinner" and it's midafternoon. They're thinking "We did? I thought we just had lunch! How did I miss dinner?" :)
Michelle
18th September 2007, 19:15
For me, it depends if it's the main meal, or the smaller, snack-type one. The main meal gets called dinner, no matter what time of day. (But that could easily be just me!)

I decided on cheese and beans on toast! I have just finished the tin of beans on toast. For some reaon I am absolutely starving lately. I could hardly concentrate at band I was that hungry. It must be breastfeeding and being pregnant, but I am not convinced. I still feel greedy (even though I am getting hunger pains!)
Everyone has different names for meals. We have lunch and dinner, my Mum has dinner and tea. I have told her that tea is a drink. Dinner is a main meal. I sometimes find myself saying I am going to do Katie's tea, as kids and tea just seem to go together, but mostly it is din dins (dinner). If we have supper, that is a snack or light meal somewhere between dinner and bed (usually when I have been to band and am hungry; usually is potato cakes).

So, for lunch today, I had Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Oh man, I missed it so much! :hissyfit: I've decided to pack up a box (or maybe several ;)) of Aussie food that I can't get in the UK, and ship it over, so I'll have it waiting for me when I arrive. Yummo!

I call my midday meal 'lunch' and my evening meal 'tea', although I think I sometimes call it 'dinner' at work so as not to confuse other people (and to avoid comments like Icecream's 'tea is a drink'). I once read that some Australians call it dinner/tea depending on whereabouts in England their ancestors came from or something.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone call their midday meal 'dinner' before. That's just weird! (Although no weirder than me naming my evening meal after a beverage, I guess!)
All this talk of food has made me hungry  I brought some 2-minute noodles in for lunch.
Don't forget a boxful of Tim-Tams Angerball! And the Vegemite! (If you're a Vegemite person.)

I don't think I've ever heard anyone call their midday meal 'dinner' before. That's just weird! (Although no weirder than me naming my evening meal after a beverage, I guess!)
The only time I call it 'dinner', is the rare occasion that we eat our main meal in the middle of the day (sometimes on a Sunday, and often when we're on holiday we eat a big meal midday, and snack later) - to me, 'lunch' is a snack. Mind you, I call it 'lunch time', no matter what size the meal, so I guess I am just weird!

OK, Twisties withdrawal I can understand! I love chicken most, followed by regular cheese. Have you tried the new type? Can't remember what it's called, but they're very addictive.
Is that the Wicked Cheese or something? I've had them, but I think they also have another one that looks like Cheezels. I love them all, but the original Cheese and Chicken ones are my favourite. I tell ya, I'd forgotten how good they are! :thud:

So, for lunch today, I had Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Oh man, I missed it so much! :hissyfit: I've decided to pack up a box (or maybe several ;)) of Aussie food that I can't get in the UK,
So WHERE can you not buy Macaroni and Cheese? Geesh... here, they have a whole macaroni and cheese section of the store! There's about four brands of the regular powdered-cheese versions and you have your choice of about five different shapes of noodles, two brands of Organic in three shapes of noodles and types of cheeses, two brands of Velveeta-style cheese, then there's Betty Crocker's tuna and/or hamburger helper macaroni and cheese, and that usually comes in different kinds of cheeses... then there's the "one serving throw it in the microwave" ones... and I'm sure I'm missing some.
And then I buy the real cheddar cheese, regular organic pasta, and come home and make it from scratch. :D
I think I'm one of the few people that isn't overly keen on Tim-Tams. :hide: For UK folks, Tim-Tams taste very similar to Penguins. I have loads of Vegemite in the UK - it's one of the few Aussie foods I can find there. :)
OK... for US folks... what are Tim-Tams, Penguins, and Vegemite?

I'm not sure I've seen microwave ones with added powdered cheese. You could try batchelors pasta 'n sauce, it might be similar perhaps. The cheese and brocolli one is quite nice although I don't eat them myself anymore because they are full of hydrogenated fats.

Tried them, and I'm not too keen on them. That's another thing I miss. Continental (Aussie brand) do about 20, maybe more, flavours of the Pasta and Sauce packets. I used to live off them at uni. They're so quick and easy.

Okay, finally caught up here... to quickly add to the lunch/dinner conversation... I've always called the late night meal "dinner" and the midday meal "lunch" in English. It's simply because in French they're "dîner" and "déjeuner" respectedly. I remember being totally confused with this whole "lunch" thing, 'cause we never used English words when talking about food, and therefore I had no idea what everyone was talking about... Now that I think of it, it was rather weird. I wonder why we didn't...
And as for the mac and cheese, I've never understood that dish. And I abhor microwave food! Food is the greatest pleasure in the world, in addition to fashion that is, and it should be treated with proper respect.
My lunch today? Mussels in white wine, mâche salad with nuts and pear and sparkling water.

Hmmm... well, I love home-made macaroni and cheese... noodles with home-made cheddar cheese sauce dumped over them. It's simple, but I love it!
I don't go for microwave food either, but for health reasons. They say that microwaved foods alter the chemical make-up of the food, so your body can't use the nutrient... that even microwaved water kills plants! So I only use mine in emergencies.
As to food being the greatest pleasure in the world... I have to admit that I've never understood that point of view. I eat because I have to to survive. Sure, there are a number of foods that I love enough to get a hankering for, but if I could somehow survive and not have to worry about ever cooking and eating, I'd really be quite happy! I'm weird, I know...

I don't question its deliciousness, what you just described sounds nice indeed! But for me the idea of soaking the pasta in cheese, as much as I adore cheese, is weird. I do love garlic pasta, where you have nothing but pasta, olive oil, garlic and some herbs (can't remember them in English, and can't be bothered to reach for the dictionary, sorry!) with a dash of parmesan on top. But too much is too much in my mind. I know, it's weird, but I just don't get it.

Okay, no offence, but you are weird. Sorry, just kidding. No, I guess it's about culture, and more importantly, the family culture. I don't remember a day when we haven't discussed about food. My mother's idea of a perfect day was some successful shopping and great dinner. And we had many of those. For both areas she applied a strict "quality over quantity" policy. We had hours-long conversations about food. I was always brought up to appreciate food, and fine cooking. It was important in our family. For some, it's not. I don't think it's a good/bad thing, or right/wrong thing. It's more like... more like a "we had a blue car, you had a red car" kind of thing.

Well... I love cheese. :-) I have this other recipe I make where I sautee garlic and herbs, and then cook down some cream and white cooking sherry, so it's a very light garlic cream sauce... then I dump it over rotini noodles and steamed broccoli and red peppers and bite-sized chicken. That sounds more like what you'd like.
It's more like... more like a "we had a blue car, you had a red car" kind of thing.
Yeah, I think you're right. Sometimes, when I hear food lovers go on and on like you do, I've wondered if I'm missing out. But then, I think of the mile-long list of things that I already love to do and can't find enough time in the day/week/year to enjoy... and I can't help thinking that maybe it's good that I don't have that on my list as well.

I need something energizing for lunch today. I think I'll have a Fuji apple with caramel sauce, a mug of chicken broth, and maybe a cheese sandwich. Gotta get ready for that midterm essay!

I thought there was a lunchtime meeting at work with food - turned out it was next week so I had not taken anything with me to eat - HCA asked me to go get her a cheeseburger from MacDonalds - I was so hungry a bought one for myself instead of getting something healthier from another shop!!

Yesterdays lunch was
Wheat free pasta with stir in Dolmio sauce, marinated artichokes, cherry tomatoes and black olivees with sprouting broccoli and carrots.
Today I am volunteering for the National Trust so it is a bit simpler and will be a cold lunch
Rice cakes with red pepper humous and a large salad, no doubt followed by the obligatory wheat free cake !
