I've seen the west end musicals:

Cats 4 times
Starlight Express 2 times

I would love to see:

Phantom of the Opera

I love musicals and would be happy seeing them all but for some reason people kept treating me to Cats lol....Not that I'm complaining. It changed everytime I saw it and I've loved each visit.

I'd love to see more musicals on stage I think they are so breathtakingly wonderful.

I'm not a huge fan of stage musicals (just can't stomach Andrew Lloyd Webber).

I do love all kinds of film musicals, from Calamity Jane to How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying).
I have on DVD:

The Wizard of Oz

West Side Story
Guys & Dolls
High Society
Easter Parade
Meet me in St Louis

Can't think of any others at the mo (though I'm sure I have others).

I'm always worried that I'll start singing along when we go to see a musical. If you heard me sing you'd know why this is a particularly bad idea. Mia, one of our cats, always leaves the room when I sing!

Try going to Eurodisney and being completely unable to stop yourself shouting at Mary Poppins. Cor Bloimey!

When I saw Grease for the second time, I went with my Mum who was supervising a trip for the school she worked for. My Mum and I were in a minibus with teachers and sixth formers and I basically did a one person performance of Grease - from start to finish in the correct order - on the way there. I was 12 and, with hindsight, am increadably embarrased!

I went to see Miss Saigon at the Bristol Hippodrome on Wednesday (a pressie from my friend for my 40th birthday!). It was amazing. Such a fantastic show, with an excellent cast and the scenes and scene changes were awesome.

It was very, very sad in places, but such a great story. I'd totally recommend it!

Singin' in the Rain: That's my absolute favourite film, musical or not! I love it! I took some friends to see it on the big screen last year, and it was nerve wracking - I was so worried thay wouldn't like it. But it seems to be a truth universally acknowledged that any person who hates that film, must be in want of a soul

I also love Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, Evita, Oliver!, Gypsy, The Sound of Music (first time I watched it, I was 18. How was it possible to be 18 and not seen it??), Moulin Rouge!, and I am quite partial to a bit of Les Miserables...

I've a warm spot in my heart for The Music Man -- watching Hermione Gingold in the movie version spoofing Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis (One Grecian Urn ... trickle, trickle, trickle) is just priceless!

I will always love Singing in the Rain -- it is brilliant on so many levels!

It really is: so beautifully shot, so funny and just life affirming. I don't necessarily believe that the point of all films is to cheer you up, but that film has never failed me. I always save it for times when I'm feeling really low and watch it.

Would anyone else care to grab a brolly and go dancing in the street?

Three out of four are Andrew Lloyd Webber shows. Might as well toss in Phantom and JCSS as well.

What about the greatest musical of all - HAIR! I love that movie so much!

Also the Sound Of Music, Grease, and many others that will come to me later. I saw Show Boat the other day for the first time, and what a show-stopper Ol' Man River is! I had goosebumps.

My sentimental stage favourite is Jesus Christ Superstar. It was the first musical I ever saw (when I was 10) and it had some big-name Aussie celebrities in it. A couple of years ago I bought it on CD and play it a lot. What a fantastic soundtrack!

Ol' Man River is one of my favorites of All Time as is...

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly,
I gotta love one man 'til I die,
So I can't help lovin' that man of mine.

In my most liberal of hearts I am so pleased that Show Boat, 1929, dealt with racism as a plot line.
Same is true with South Pacific (in '45?), also dealing with racism and then winning a Pulitzer Prize for just that. Hmmm, Cabaret comes to mind but really, that's another thread.

Musicals have been such a big part of my life, I love hearing them and watching them.

There was a time when musical theater produced cross-over hits, I can think of Louis Armstrong singing Hello Dolly and hearing it on the radio, My Favorite Things from Sound of Music was covered by Miles Davis. Even The Beatles covered Till There Was You from The Music Man.

Back when I was a wee lad, I listened to Camelot, Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Bye Bye Birdie and Man of La Mancha so often that eventually I could sing the skips in the record (I know, I know - I'm old!).

There are days when I claim some kind of sophistication and act the snob and only listen to A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd and the other Sondheim's ... but really, give me a show stopper like Ol' Man River any day, it still gives this jaded heart the chills.

Dere's an ol' man called de Mississippi
Dat's de ol' man dat I'd like to be!
What does he care if de world's got troubles?
What does he care if de land ain't free?

Ol' man river,
Dat ol' man river
He mus'know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin',
He jes'keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

He don' plant taters,
He don't plant cotton,
An' dem dat plants'em
is soon forgotten,
But ol'man river,
He jes keeps rollin'along.

You an'me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin' an' racket wid pain,
Tote dat barge!
Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk
An' you land in jail.

Ah gits weary
An' sick of tryin'
Ah'm tired of livin'
An' skeered of dyin',
But ol' man river,
He jes'keeps rolling' along.

Colored folks work on de Mississippi,
Colored folks work while de white folks play,
Pullin' dose boats from de dawn to sunset,
Gittin' no rest till de judgement day.

Don't look up
An' don't look down,
You don' dast make
De white boss frown.
Bend your knees
An'bow your head,
An' pull date rope
Until you' dead.

Let me go 'way from the Mississippi,
Let me go 'way from de white man boss;
Show me dat stream called de river Jordan,
Dat's de ol' stream dat I long to cross.

O' man river,
Dat ol' man river,
He mus'know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin'
He jes' keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

Long ol' river forever keeps rollin' on...

He don' plant tater,
He don' plant cotton,
An' dem dat plants 'em
Is soon forgotten,
but ol' man river,
He jes' keeps rollin' along.

Long ol' river keeps hearing dat song.
You an' me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin an' racked wid pain.
Tote dat barge!
Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk
An' you land in jail.

Ah, gits weary

My son Philip who is 14 belongs to a local musical theatre group and attends every week - their latest production is Guys and Dolls for July. It will be a great surprise as he wont say which part he has or anything about it. Last summer it was Hairspray which was fantastic :smile2:

Well then ....

You could go with the Best Picture movies that won Oscars:
West Side Story
Gigi
My Fair Lady
Chicago
Oliver!
An American in Paris

or maybe something a little more new?
Dreamgirls
Little Shop of Horrors
Chicago
Cry Baby (with Johnny Depp!)
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
Hedwig and the Angry Inch

perhaps simply Disney is your style -
Mulan
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
Little Mermaid

It's a wonderful world of musicals to explore and embrace!
Give 'em an act with lots of flash in it and the reaction will be passionate.

I think all the actors enjoyed hamming it up in the gangster characters they were playing.

I saw 'Wicked' for the third time last evening. It was the last night for 13 cast members including Kerry Ellis who plays Elphaba. They are off to Broadway for 6 months. Because of this it was a very special poignant show. The full house was mostly people who had been before. Every song was greeted with tremendous clamour and applause causing the cast to have to pause and acknowledge the audience. At the end was a speech and roaring standing ovation. We couldn't get near the stage door afterwards because of an enormous queue full of people with flowers for Kerry. She was truly fantastic.

Just back for seeing West Side Story at Sadler's Wells with OH and kids - our end of year family treat. Went to Wagamama's first for lunch - delicious.

The performance was fantastic - audience pretty much entranced - I wanted to join in singing 'Maria' and 'America' I think Helen would have left if I did!. The rooftop dancing was magic - the original choreography. I'm still full up from noodle lunch so no tea tonight yet.

That brings back memories of us all seeing "The Sound of Music" film and me starting to sing to all the tunes to your embarrassment

Glad you enjoyed it and that it was a good production.

I love musicals, both film and theatre. My most favorite experience was seeing Elaine Paige in Sunset Blvd in London over 10 years ago. I've also seen and loved (some multiple times) Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Beauty and the Beast, Sound of Music, Secret Garden, Into the Woods, Rent, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Showboat, Les Miserables and Cats.

As far as movies go, my favorites are:

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
High Society
Holiday Inn
American in Paris
Singin' in the Rain
There's No Business Like Show Business
Mother Wore Tights
Guys and Dolls
White Christmas
South Pacific
Showboat
On the Town

Oh my, I think I could name many more! Pretty much name anything starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Grable, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Donald O'Connor, Mitzi Gaynor, Ann Miller and I'm there. Plus many more I'm forgetting...

I have several of those musicals in my TBW pile ;)

I've gotten right into Gene Kelly recently. He's just terrific, isn't he? I watched An American in Paris the other day. I confess to getting a little bored during those long dream sequences though. In fact, I may have skipped through some parts

That's okay, Kylie, I do the same every once in awhile! Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for them. He is wonderful though. I think my favorite routine of his is in Singin' in the Rain, when he does a scene with Donald O'Connor and they sing 'Moses Supposes.' I LOVE the dance they do!

They dont make 'em like that any more do they? I love everyone of those and could watch them over and over. I would add "West Side Story" though.
