I keep noticing this author pop up in the threads, so I thought I'd start her her own thread. :)

I've read My Sister's Keeper.. I thought it raised some interesting issues, and I for one 'liked' the ending. I have, however, seen some bad reviews, and most people seem to not like the ending.

I have The Pact on my shelf to read, but I've lost my enthusiasm for it. I see a couple of people are reading it.. how are you finding it?

I'm reading it just now and just over half way through. I'm actually finding it a little bit of a plod, but not necessarily in a bad way. It's not all that easy a read, especially if you have teenage children. Quite thought provoking in its subject matter. I could have done with a bit lighter reading over the NY!

My Sister's Keeper is on my "to read" list - I got it via a swap...

I was a little perturbed by the ending - but I think that there was no choice! Afterall what else what would have Anna have done?

I enjoyed the Pact and I must admit it is a scary thought what could happen as the kids race towards their teenage years - as a parent it makes you think!!

I have just reserved 'Vanishing Acts' from my library and am debating buying 'My Sisters Keeper' too, might wait till I tried the library book first though.

I am going to start Perfect Match tonight and I'm looking forward to it. Vanishing Acts was quite good, although not one of Jodi's strongest books

Has anyone read Plain Truth? I really liked that one and learnt alot about another culture

Most of her books look really good, I especially want to read 'The Pact' and 'My Sisters Keeper' as well.

'My Sisters Keeper' as well.
This has been popping up quite a lot.

Maureen

You will not go wrong with this author - I have read 4 of hers and I start the 5th tonight.

My Sisters Keeper will leave you gripped to your seat - it is a great book, leaving you with many emotions. It has been walking off the shelves over her - everytime I have gone into a bookshop for the last 6 months, I have seen people queuing to buy it

Michelle
8th January 2006, 19:25
And yet I also seen some pretty bad reviews of My Sister's Keeper, especially concerning the ending.

What genre is it?

Maureen

Ok..have read the reviews on Amazon. I think I would like this book. I read about this subject, which is highly controvesial, in a couple of non-fiction books. Can see why it is being so popular - highly controvesial subject, with no clear cut 100 % right or wrong issues.

Angel
8th January 2006, 19:38
I would call it a modern day novel -it focuses on modern moral choices and how far would you go to save your child's life.

That is very tough. Obviously if someone puts the question to a parent, the first thing that pops into their head is - I would do anything. BUT...would you commit murder? Would you kill someone for their organs? Where would you draw the line?

Inanna
15th January 2006, 12:44
I visited her website just now, didn't know that she had so many books out.
Vanishing Act is on its way to my library and I'm going to read it to see what I think of her writing, but I have to say that all the other books look great, they're the type of books that really get you thinking about what you would do in similar situations I think.

Angel
15th January 2006, 16:38
I've read Vanishing Acts and I did enjoy it. It's well executed and you do understand the reasons leading up to the crime, once into it I did not stop 'til the end.

I don't think it's one of her strongest books though. But Jodi is the mistress of going into topics where most others do not go. exploring events behind a situation / family and cleverly plays on these to make the reader think about what they would do.

Jodi Picoult - Keeping Faith

Courtesy of Amazon:-

Synopsis
Hot on the heels of her Richard & Judy smash-hit "My Sister's Keeper", Jodi Picoult's latest drama tells the compelling story of an ordinary little girl with an extraordinary gift, who finds herself at the centre of a huge media controversy. For the second time in her marriage, Mariah White catches her husband with another woman, and Faith, their seven-year-old daughter, witnesses every painful minute. In the aftermath of a sudden divorce, Mariah struggles with depression and Faith begins to confide in an imaginary friend. At first, Mariah dismisses these exchanges as a child's imagination. But when Faith starts reciting passages from the Bible, develops stigmata, and begins to perform miraculous healings, Mariah wonders if her daughter - a girl with no religious background - might indeed be seeing God. As word spreads and controversy heightens, Mariah and Faith are besieged by believers and disbelievers alike, caught in a media circus that threatens what little stability they have left. What are you willing to believe? Is Faith a prophet or a troubled little girl? Is Mariah a good mother facing an impossible crisis - or a charlatan using her daughter to reclaim the attention her unfaithful husband withheld?

I quite enjoyed this book, I felt that it was one of Jodi's lighter books making it pleasant to read and easy to follow late into the night

9/10

Louiseog
11th May 2006, 19:41
I love her books but have to leave quite a big gap between reading them. Not sure why,
The Pact next, have read My Sisters Keeper 8/10, Salem Falls 7/10 and Plain Truths 8/10.

Inanna
11th May 2006, 19:55
Same here Louise, I leave a gap inbetween as they can be quite emotional reads.

So far I have read:

Keeping Faith 10/10
My Sister's Keeper 8/10
Vanishing Acts 7/10
Perfect Match 8/10
The Tenth Circle 7/10

And I have The Pact, Salem Falls and Plain Truths on my shelf, also ordered Second Glance from my library

Angel
11th May 2006, 22:00
I must admit that I need a while between books. I didn't find Keeping Faith quite so draining. Plain Truth was very good and I was misty eyed in a couple of places!!!

Inanna

glad it wasnt the first one i ever read as i dont think i would have picked another of her books to read.

has anyone else read this book would be interestd to know what you thought of it

I've just read The Pact, it was passed on to me by a friend and I thought I'd give it a go seeing as she is getting good reviews. I found it a bit of a drag to get through. It was okay and the story could have actually happened to someone in the past for all we know, but it wasn't my cup of tea at all.

I've skim read some of this, but got too excited and wanted to add my thoughts!

I'm a huge Picoult fan - I've read My Sister's Keper (first, and still one of the best in my opinion), The Pact, Plain Truth, Salem Falls and vanishing Acts. I have copies of Keeping Faith and Perfect Match on the shelf, as well as Tenth Circle which a friend bought me signed as a consolation when I couldn't go to a talk Jodi was giving locally.

Certainly up with my top 5 authors!

steffee
20th June 2006, 19:42
Well, I didn't skim, I read the whole thread.

I read My Sister's Keeper last year to see what all the fuss was about, and thought the story, and the ending, great. I then read The Pact, which I thought was even better (one of my favourite reads from last year, and it was last year I first read Lolita). I think then I either outgrew her as a writer, or picked a couple of dull choices (Vanishing Acts and another, can't remember, maybe Keeping Faith) because they were awful and I couldn't get through them. Have just bought Tenth Circle, but think if I ever do read it, it won't be for a while yet.

I first read MSK to see what this great plot twist was that Richard and Judy kept antagonising me with :) and I absolutley loved it. I shed a tear (or a bucket load) at the end and really felt for each of the characters in their own individual ways.

Ever since I've been on a search to read more of her books but they haven't quite lived up to that first one. The Pact was a good read, Salem Falls was just OK IMO, I didn't like Plain Truth as I predicted the ending far too soon and spoilt it for myself and Perfect Match came the closest to MSK in terms of a great story and sympathy with the characters.

I have just managed to get hold of The Tenth Circle and Vanishing Acts which I hope to be reading soon.

Still think she's a great author and I think her choice of subject matter has a lot to do with it. It really makes you think.

Kell
21st June 2006, 12:33
MSK was certainly rather a hard-hitting subject, but I thikn Piccoult handled it really well & the tone was never too heavy. If her other books are of a similar style, I think I'll enjoy them, but I wonder if I'll feel they're very similar, or perhaps too similar?

Have read My Sisters Keeper and The Pact and loved them. Im gutted now as louiseog has mentioned that there quite the same. Maybe ill have a bit of a break before reading another. What I love most about her books is that everything takes place in a court room and its like you are one of the jurors trying to figure out what the truth REALLY is....sometimes you think you know then there will be a twist and you're like "hmm...maybe im wrong" :D

Just finished Plain Truth, I enjoyed it but it wasnt as good as I thought it would be. I guessed the ending wrong though, so that made it a bit more shocking. I never try to guess endings of a book, but this one had me doing so. Dont know if thats a good thing or not. :dunno:

I managed to read both Vanishing Acts and Tenth Circle (it wasn't like I needed my arm twisting though :) ) and I thought they were both great. Both topics you never thought you would find yourself in but Picoult shows you just how easy it is to fall into them. They both make you question your feelings on moral/social issues too.

I read the Pact first, just picked it up in a charity shop, I had never heard of her before (it was before I joined any book forums!), I loved it and the style of writing, recommended it to all my friends.
Salem Falls was good aswell and there were some of the same characters from The Pact.
Really loved My Siste's Keeper and the ending really shocked and upset me.
Was a bit disappointed by Vanishing Acts as I thought it 'went off' a bit in the middle.
Just finished Plain Truth and really enjoyed it, loved the Amish stuff.
Am desperately trying to get a swap for Perfect Match now.

First Jodi Picoult I ever read was The Pact. Found it started off okay but got bogged down with the legal side of it all. Also found characters a bit insipid for me. Did finish it though.

Next I read My Sister's Keeper. Loved this one. Great ending! Also liked all of the characters in it. . . especially the dog!

Now want to read Plain Truth. Is that one good?

Also have Vanishing Acts and Perfect Match tbr.

I'm not sure if I added it to this thread or not, but I was lucky enough to get a proof of Nineteen Minutes (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nineteen-Minutes-Jodi-Picoult/dp/0340935278/sr=1-1/qid=1168178393/ref=sr_1_1/026-4479363-8624426?ie=UTF8&s=books) and I thought it was really good.. my review is here (http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=2158).

Also have Vanishing Acts and Perfect Match tbr.
yeah...you might want to put Vanishing Acts at the bottom;)

I just picked up "Keeeping Faith". Sadly I've had to push it quite far under my bed where my TBR pile is teetering towards an avalanche. :bookworm:

I finished 'Keeping Faith', I did enjoy it but I feel like I should have read one of her other books first. I found 'Keeping Faith' very interesting, raised a lot of questions, a really good read but a bit intense.:D

I just finished Second Glance...anyone read this? The book was pretty good....mainly a love and ghost story rolled into one...but also goes into eugenics, which I found fascinating and quite disturbing. Also, I think this book was a bit too long. At least 75 pages too long.

for those wondering:
Eugenics-is a social philosophy which advocates the improvement of human hereditary traits through various forms of intervention. The goals of various groups advocating eugenics have included the creation of healthier, more intelligent people, to save society's resources, and lessen human suffering, as well as racially based goals or desires to breed for other specific qualities, such as fighting abilities.

Earlier proposed means of achieving these goals focused on selective breeding, while modern ones focus on prenatal testing and screening, genetic counseling, birth control, in vitro fertilization, and genetic engineering. Opponents argue that eugenics is immoral and is based on, or is itself, pseudoscience. Historically, eugenics has been used as a justification for coercive state-sponsored discrimination and human rights violations, such as forced sterilization of persons who appear to have - or are claimed to have - genetic defects, the killing of the institutionalized and, in some cases, outright genocide of races perceived as inferior or undesireable.

Hi all, new to the forum. I have read many Jodi Picoult and "Nineteen Minutes" is the most recent.

For those who read it, my questions are....
1) why was it not brought to the attention of the court and parents of the abuse from the older brother that died in a car accident?

2) did you feel the emotional abuse the girl felt from her boyfriend was enough for her to turn the gun on him when her friend was killing her friends?

3) did you buy the defence of the battered wife syndrom given the premedatative acts?

i look forward to hearing from you.
peace

I have read and enjoyed (in order of preference) My Sisters Keeper, Plain Truth, The Pact and Mercy.

I read Mercy a couple of weeks ago and am sorry to say I was disappointed. Mercy is not Picoults strongest book and being Scottish myself I was bemused at the Scottish characters/ history references(ahem!).

I think I have almost every other book she has had published on mount TBR with the exception of Nineteen Minutes - which would be the one I really want to read now!

I have read My Sister's Keeper, Vanishing Acts, and Plain Truth. And I actually like them in that order. My Sister's Keeper is one of my favorite books of all time. The ending is fantastic because the author makes us do just what the parents have done all along....we view Anna's life as permanent and her sister's life as fragile. The ending reminds us that we are all really here just day to day.
I lent that book to a friend at work, who passed away about two weeks ago. It was interesting to me that we had just discussed life and death in relation to this book, and now she is gone.-sorry off subject.
The other two books were fine easy reads but not as great as My Sister's Keeper.

I actually found the ending of My Sister's Keeper a little bit...well, a bit of a cop out. It seemed to me like the author took the easy way out in a way.

Loved MSK and also Plain Truth. Have a few others on my shelf but can't get a chance to read them, due to joining bookrings/rays via bookcrossing. Think I read both of them via there though.
