View Full Version : Antagonist as main character?

Hi again, looking for more books.

I apologise for that fact that 'antagonist' is probably the wrong word to use.

Does anyone know of any books where the main character is the villain? Just a basic example of following a serial murderer throughout the book, and how he escapes from the police, rather than following the police and the serial murderer alternately.

That's a crappy example, I admit. But does anyone have any ideas? If possible, please avoid bog-standard thriller stuff (essentially what I described above).

Thanks :)

The Debt To Pleasure by John Lanchester (although telling you that the main protagonist is the bad guy may kind of ruin the book slightly).

You may like to try Crime and Punishment by Fydor Dostoevsky.

I have just finished Helpless by Barbara Goudy which might fit the bill. One of the main characters is the abductor of a child and the whole story is built around his feelings and perspective, rather than the child or the child's mother.

I've just read The Silver Bear by Derek Haas (http://bcfreviews.wordpress.com/2008/08/03/the-silver-bear-by-derek-haas/), which is about an assassin.

Have you read the Dexter series? Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter, etc. (not sure if that is the correct order...)

The main character is, in fact, a serial killer, but the author gives him a lot more depth than just that. It's also a fabulous show on Showtime. :)
