What book am I thinking of ????

I am racking my brains trying to remember a book I read as a Teen.

All I remeber is a character who was Professor ??? He was a very intelligent type, who was loud & brash, a bit like the professor in the Sliders TV series. He has a younger companion who sees past his brash side.

I cant remember a lot about the story, I seem to think it was a follow up to another book, I remember that they were on a train, something happens where virtually everyone collapses as if dead. I though t it might have been a Jules Verne book but can't locate it.

What am I thinking of ??

I'm glad you remembered. There's nothing worse than wanting to revisit a book from your past but forgetting what it's called!
