Looking for a book or books.

Hi. I'm looking for books to read and I have a few things I would like in those:
The book has to have some deep thought or thoughts in it - that you encounter throughout the story.
Another important thing I like in a story is an interesting main character that maybe an Antagonist or Protagonist - as long as he's interesting-deviant-brave-smart -anything goes.
It may be Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi - I will look into anything.

I really have not read that many books, so if I'm being too specific - just tell me.
On the other hand if you read this and think that there are a lot of books out there then please try and chose the top 5.

Oh yes, that's a good one. Or anything by Patricia Highsmith really. Some of her non-Ripley books are even better (I think), like The Cry of the Owl or This Sweet Sickness - both feature protagonists/antagonists (it's hard to decide which he is in each case...) you won't forget in a hurry.

Dresden Files? Detective Urban fantasy about Harry Dresden who helps the police investigate paranormal and supernatural events. His character is great, witty, sharp. It's all wrote in first person. Great series.
