Mine was the new Texas album.. and it's fab!

I bought two CDs the other day.

One was an experimental jazz album called Saloua by Erik Truffaz. He's a trumpet player I'd never heard of before, but I liked the samples on amazon.com, so I bought it. It's a little spacey but good.

The other one was A Decade of Hits (1969 - 1979) by the Allman Brothers Band. Good stuff. :-)

I think our most recent one was the entire album by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (it was after seeing that Xmas lights to music thing (http://snopes.com/photos/arts/xmaslights.asp)) - it was amazing.

Before that, it was the Gorillaz' latest album & a bunch of random stuff by Rammstein (which has had me screaming "Bang Bang!" at obscure moments ever since - LOL!).

I just bought 4:

Chavez Ravine by Ry Cooder
Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens
Dimanche a Bamako by Amadou and Mariam
and
LoveKraft by the Super Furry Animals.

That's the trouble with Christmas shopping. Get me into the shops and I buy loads of stuff for myself.

Oops.

All of them are excellent. The Amadou and Mariam is chilled out African party music. Probably the best (possibly the record of 2005) is the Sufjan Stevens one, although it won't be to everyone's taste. Acoustic and mellow and quite odd.

What's Death Cab... like? Friends keep recommending the record to me.

Janice
28th December 2005, 22:33
To be honest, I can't really describe them. It was just something I stumbled upon a while back, and fell in love. If you've ever heard The Postal Service, they're like that except without the techno beat. That's about the only way I can describe them.

Freewheeling Andy
28th December 2005, 23:17
Ha! Typically, of course, The Postal Service are another band I keep hearing recommended but haven't (to my knowledge) heard.

I guess I'll have to try and find a couple of downloads.

I bought a cd on ebay recently. I borrowed a cd from my Mum (without asking), and ended up leaving home with it (5 years ago). After I split with the boyfriend and moved to live on my own, I discoved that the box was empty - both cds were missing!

I've spent about 2/3 years looking for a replacement and finally found it! I don't think my Mum even realises the thing's missing though . . . might just keep it.

A couple of CD's I've bought fairly recently, that had good reviews but which I'm a bit disappointed in are 'The Road to Escondido' by J.J.Cale and Eric Clapton, and 'Modern Times' by Bob Dylan. I'm a fan of these guys from way back and like their laid-back style. But honestly, if JJ got any more laid back in this album, he'd be falling asleep and toppling off his stool. It just somehow lacks the toe-tapping rhythm of his earlier albums.
Bob Dylan sounds surprisingly like Willie Nelson in some of his songs and his usual grit seems to be missing.
Hear Tony Joe White is putting out a new one soon, so am hoping for a good swampy rock sound from him.

On a completely different note, acquired 'Light Grenades' by Incubus. A lot of their music is fairly heavy but 'Light Grenades' is a much softer sound and by far my favourite album.

Last CD I bought was Jamiroquai High Times - Singles 1992 - 2006. I'd been waiting ages for them to release a greatest hits album - I like a lot of their singles but haven't liked much I've heard off their albums. Have to say I've hardly listened to it because I got 12 Stops and Home by The Feeling for Christmas, which I love and just seem to want to listen to all the time!

My dad went to go see her live (actually, I think he's seen her twice in 12 months!): he says she's fantastic live :)

Yes, I need to listen to it a few more times too, although initial impressions are that I like it a lot.

It is growing on me now... I love 'Conquest' and 'You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)'.

What are your highlights, Kylie?

I got into the White Stripes through Get Behind Me Satan (one of the best albums ever!) and this one is a bit different (not in a bad way though).

Oddly, I don't have Get Behind Me, Satan. I have all the others (although Elephant is my favourite) but I never got around to buying it! Conquest also stands out for me. It's a song that immediately stuck in my mind and I keep coming back to it. I still need to listen more to get to know the other songs better.

Oddly, I don't have Get Behind Me, Satan. I have all the others (although Elephant is my favourite) but I never got around to buying it! I was up in London yesterday and stumbled across In The Naked City, a great compilation of 60s soul based around the theme of New York - Jackie Wilson, the Drifters and a host of lesser-known artistes. Sort of thing Jules would enjoy, I'm guessing - great stuff!

Anjunabeats 100: Mixed by Above & Beyond and Drum & Vass Arena: Mixed by Friction and Fabio (the latter will be returned and removed from my iPod because the tunes featured do not match my preferred style of D&B).

I do have a few Deborah Conway Cd's:

String of Pearls
The Songs of Patsy Cline
Summertown is her latest

Deborah Conway is such an interesting artist; a few years back she was involved in the stage production of "Doing Time with Patsy Cline", it was a tribute play paying homage to Patsy Cline's life and music and Deborah was absolutely brilliant as Patsy! I think out of all her Cd's this one would be my favourite.

In recent years she has been involved in the stage production of Broad; I don't know if you have heard of it Kylie? Every couple of years Deborah puts together a group of emerging young Australian female musicians and songwriters from different musical styles and influences and they travel Australia doing a series of concerts, it's a really eclectic mix of contemporary folk, jazz and country.

I went to see her fourth production of Broad on Friday night and had a wonderful time, she had such an interesting mix of women with her this time. One artist that I particularly enjoyed and I have a feeling that you might like her, was Laura Jean, she described her music style as chamber folk.

The last CD i bought was Brand X Misery by a band called Cire.
They are a good progressive rock band with grunge and alt/rock influences. Very 'underground' band. If Tool and Rage Against the Machne were ever mixed into one super band, Cire is what they'd sound like. :)

The last thing i *cough*downloaded*cough* was the full alice in chains discography, as ive never took the time to actually listen to them :)
