View Full Version : Recent Upgrade (3.7) - features / queries etc

Michelle
3rd May 2008, 18:47
I shall use this thread to discuss new features since the upgrade, try to answer any queries etc.

To start..

~ The bit at the top which tells you how many new posts you have is a modification. I had to uninstall the previous one, and reinstall this new one, and I know it looks a tiny bit different.

~ The quick reply box doesn't have a link for smilies.. so that is another modification. If you click the little smilie, it will give you the pop up box.

~ as I said in the announcement, the FAQ has been updated, so take a look there to try to find out a bit about the new features.

~ in your profiles are 'visitor messages'.. please be aware that these are publicly viewable. If you have something private to say, please continue to use the PM system.

~ Tags (http://bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_vb3_tags) are fairly well explained in the FAQ (http://bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_vb3_tags).

Tags will be useful in the future for searching, so please use sensibly. One of the most useful places will be in the 'Specific Authors or Books' section - in the box for tags, please pop the name of the author or book being discussed. The same applies for the 'Reviews' section.. please put the author's name, and if possible, the book title. if there aren't enough characters available for the full title, please use the most important words within it.

~ Customise Profile - this is an option in your UserCP, which allows you to change the colours etc of your profile. Mine is a little bit pink at the moment, I'm sure it'll change. ;) Yep, just one more thing to waste your time with on here! LOL

The last sentence summed it all up. I took a look around it, and wow... that's going to take the whole night! You're evil... you're trying to make me not graduate on purpose...

I love the upgrades!

Mine's a bit vicious but we're off out now so I'll tone it down tomorrow!

Thanks Micha. :)

Yes, well, we're easy to please. *grin*

And some of them, like the tags, are great but only show their "greatness" after some use. The colors are fun now!

~ In the navbar is 'Quick Links' which, as the name suggests, provides quick links to certain features. These include the new 'social groups', your albums etc, plus links to edit your sig, options etc.

I've also just added in a mod, to show the top posters for each month. Go and see if you make the top! :)

Michelle

No laura - private messages still exist, just as they always did. Visitor messages are something different.

Where do I find this feature?

5th May 2008, 17:57
Karen, click on Quick Links (on the title bar) and under Miscellaneous you will see Top Posters of the Month.

I must like to talk as I am top for January, February and April LOL!

Karen, click on Quick Links (on the title bar) and under Miscellaneous you will see Top Posters of the Month.
I don't have that as an option. I have miscellaneous but it only contains links to Private Messages, Subscribed Threads, Your Profile and Who's Online.

Woo hoo number 4. Actually I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm obviously spending too much time in here :)

Michelle

Has anyone tried using their photo album yet? I haven't had a chance to look at that.

Nici76
7th May 2008, 18:02
I have! I have an album called Fifi. :D

It's only got three photos in it though!

Michelle
7th May 2008, 18:06

Nope none at all Michelle. :)

Actually I think I will add some more now!

Yup - started an album this evening. Just a few pics of me at my wedding and my sis's wedding really. Ooh, and one of me meeting Stuart Macbride when he did a book signnig in Aberdeen...

Echo

I put in a picture of my nephew and a picture of my boyfriend and me from a few years ago. I'll hopefully add more, but I'm not much of a picture-taker.

~ Tags - There is now a table below each thread, for tags. These are basically keywords for each thread, and they can be used as another way of searching. The most important place for these is probably in the 'Specific Authors / Books' section, and the 'Reviews', although they can be used anywhere.

So, if you're starting a thread in these sections, please take a moment to pop the book title, and author's name in the tag box. If you're reading an old thread, and it's not been tagged, you can also add.. there's a link on the tag box which says 'Edit Tags'.

In other sections, if you feel that there is a keyword, or two, to describe the thread, please pop that in two.

If you're not sure what to add, ask yourself what words people would use to search for that particular thread.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding this "friends" thing properly...

Some people asked to be added to my friends list, which I did, but how do I ask to be added to theirs? Is it automatic? Tonight I tried typing in their names in the box and clicking "add friend" - is that right? Good grief, I'm hopeless...

Michelle
9th May 2008, 19:17
When you visit their profile, it tells you how many friends they have. There's a link somewhere on that box that says 'Befriend xxx', and you need to click that.

Mia
9th May 2008, 19:22
Ah! Thanks Michelle. :)

EDIT: nope, I'm still not seeing it. Sorry.

I have just uploaded some pictures to my album. I found it very easy to do and very fast. Hope you all enjoy my piccys. Please note the one of H&D's dog being licked by the cat. I believe she mentioned this in a thread recently.

Michelle
9th May 2008, 19:38
Mia, look for the box that says Friends at the top.. there are two links at the bottom.. one says Show all Friends, the other says 'Befriend (that person)'. if someone is already added as one of your friends though, you won't see it.

Louiseog

I've created an album but one picture will not load? Any reason?

Janet
10th May 2008, 04:41
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps there is a size limit and it's too large or it's an unrecognised format? Although I guess if it's similar to the others you've uploaded then it won't be either of those things so I wasn't much help really!

Nici76
10th May 2008, 08:57
Louise, the same thing was happening to me last night. I tried about 10 different photos of Robbie and none of them would upload.

I gave up in the end and decided that I obviously wasn't meant to post a picture of him!

Michelle
10th May 2008, 09:03
Obviously without knowing what the photos are like, I can't help.. but each usergroup has certain limits, so maybe there's a reason there??

Other than that, there may be an error with the installed software that resizes etc.. so if everyone starts having problems, I'll look into it.

I'll also try to upload some myself later.

Louiseog
10th May 2008, 09:47
They are all the same but I think I'll go with Nici, what will be will be don't put yourself out Michelle!

Michelle
10th May 2008, 10:32
I've just uploaded 2 small photos, plus one large one that needed resizing, and all worked ok. Did either of you get a specific error message?

I just noticed something else whilst doing mine.. you're given some code that allows you to link to each photo. Please DO NOT use this facility to store photos, and link direct back to from other places, as you would with the likes of photobucket.. as this will eat up our bandwidth, and get me in trouble! Thanks. :)

Lilywhite
10th May 2008, 17:54
I had trouble with a couple of mine, they just needed re-sizing slightly.

Nici76

I have just resized the photos of Robbie and I had no problems uploading them then.

I'm having a couple of problems, it may be just me
I can't get the food and drink smilies to load, all the others work fine.
And I do not seem to be able to add more pictures to my existing albums. Before there was an add picture function which is no longer showing. Also when I go to add a new album it comes up with the message that I have no pictures in that album.

Kylie

It's not just you, Poppy. The food and drink smilies don't work for me either.

Each usergroup has limits on the amount of photos (I have to consider space and bandwidth.) I've just increased it a little for your usergroup.

Sorry, I can't see an obvious reason, and Monday morning is not a good time to find out! ;) This'll have to wait until later in the week, I'm afraid.

Thanks Michelle, there's no rush, just thought it might be something I was doing wrong (it usually is  )

Mia
14th May 2008, 19:36
Michelle, I'm having a problem updating my profile (specifically "currently reading"). When I change what I'm reading and save it, it comes up with the message that I have entered an invalid birth date!! (And yes, I did put it in the correct box!) ;) When I went back in, the currently reading showed my old book and not the one I'd just changed it to.

Michelle
14th May 2008, 19:49
It may be to do with one of the security settings (which also stops under 13s joining (a legal issue)). Is there anywhere in your profile where you change alter your date of birth, because I think it requires you to put your year in aswell. As long as you have the right option selected, it won't display that for anyone else.. only admin (and I think mods) could see it.. and we're signed a secrets act. ;)

Try that, and let me know.

Mia
14th May 2008, 19:55
Thanks Michelle, I put my birth year in and it changed the currently reading this time. Thank you! :D

Janet
14th May 2008, 20:18
I've just looked at your profile, Mia, and I can't see your year of birth - just the day/month. :)

Michelle
14th May 2008, 20:31
But I think you could if you went into your Mod CP - that's what I meant.

Two more small additions:

New strikethrough tag added. If you use the main reply, you will see a little button at the end, which looks like this.. http://bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/images/strikethrough.gif. The code to use is simple..
[- ]text[ /-] (without the gaps)

The second is a Personal Notepad, for all members with 10 or more posts, which can be found in your User CP.
