Anyone watching this? It's the show to cast the role of Nancy in "Oliver!".
I watched the Maria and Joseph shows and actually picked the winners from the start, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting into this one in the same way. Still, I've watched it tonight and my current favourites are:
Samantha (probably every heterosexual man's favourite too in that outfit!). Very good performance.
Cleo - one I picked from the beginning, but she didn't have a good song to sing tonight. I hope she gets a better song next time, as she does have a good voice.
Sarah - nice voice, but need to hear her again.
Ashley - as above.
Keisha - didn't want to pick her as she came across as very arrogant, but she did have probably the best voice tonight.
So these are my picks, based on tonight's show. :)

Nobody stood out for me particularly tonight.
The one who should go tomorrow had a dark blue halter neck and red hair - can't remember her name but she just looked awful on stage

I think I know who you mean...
Was she one of the first ones on (if not the first), and she stood in a really ungainly way with her legs apart and stomped around really gracelessly?
(Oh dear, that sounds rather nasty! But it was true.)

lol  that made me laugh so much
I'll check tomorrow. The first 3 women on - their dresses did not fit properly. Sorry but this is the dressmaker in me. The one in green was too tight and it rode up. The one in lilac was meant to be spilling out of the top - but not that much! And it was too tight. I forget my rude comment about the third one... oh I know - too short!! I shall stop wittering on now

I think I know who you mean. It could be a great way to play Nancy, if it was acted right, but that girl just had no style whatsoever.
Does anyone know when this is being staged? My Mum was saying today that she would like to get my sister west end tickets for her 21st in October.

Was that Jessie? The one who did 'River Deep Mountain High'? DVO said she should lift her head
If so, I really like her but thought that the Tina Turner impression was just too much tonight.
I actually quite liked them all but three (Tara, Ashley and Francesca)
Of the Olivers, I think I only like two! The one who got through tonight and another one. They are all far too 'stage/private school' for my liking.
What was this ALW said about wanting 'gritty'?

Just watched the results show this evening and Amy ( I think thats the ungainly, stomping around the stage girl somebody was referring to) got sent home. She was pretty stompy and that green dress was WAY too tight but I still think she was more of a Nancy than the blonde one. Those jellied eels looked disgusting! The first Oliver is so angelic looking.

I was with DVO - I liked Amy. I don't think she was the stompy one was she?
And that first Oliver sings and looks like an angel yes, but he'd better sort his diction out otherwise nobody will know what the poor little cherub is saying

I love Graham Norton on this show! :)
Amy... I wasn't sure what I thought of her, but yes I preferred her to Francesca- Fran has too much of a 'strong' voice to be a Nancy.
thelastwatcher33
31st March 2008, 19:24
Maybe she wasn't, there was alot of head shaking and stalking around the stage by a few of the girls trying to 'rough' it up. I love Graham Norton and John, I dont think that Denise was too impressed by Fran mentioning the fact they worked together either.
Mia
31st March 2008, 19:38
In the sing-off, I preferred Francesca's voice to Amy's - hers was a bit shrieky, especially on the higher notes.
I like all the judges except Denise, I cannot stand her. She can be very nasty. Yes, she has to criticise as part of her job, but she seems to do it in an unnecessarily nasty way.

Did anyone see what Kevin Spacey has been saying in the Times about the BBC and these Andrew Lloyd Webber shows??
Kevin Spacey today accused the BBC of "crossing the line" by unfairly promoting West End musicals at the expense of other theatre productions with its talent show programmes.
The Hollywood star and Old Vic artistic director said that series such as Any Dream Will Do and I'd Do Anything constitute "a 13-week promotion for a musical".
In an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Spacey added: "You are not a commercial broadcaster, and I thought that was crossing the line. Where's our 13-week programme? I have spoken to your chairman but he has yet to get back to me."
I have to say I agree.
Did anyone see what Kevin Spacey has been saying in the Times about the BBC and these Andrew Lloyd Webber shows??
I have to say I agree.
Much as I like him, he tends to be constantly on a publicity drive for his theatre.
Of all the London theatres, he's the only Director I know of. I'm sure there are many who miss out on the publicity he garners

Well, my favourites from tonight's show were Sarah, Ashley and Samantha. I really like their voices.
I also think Keisha has a really good voice, but they seem to be intent on sabotaging her by giving her rubbish songs.
My least favourite was Tara, but I also don't like Jodie, Rachel or Jessie (who the panel seem to love). I predict it will be Tara and Keisha in the sing-off!

I got it right! I should have had some money on it.
Tara was the worst one on Saturday, but in the sing off I actually thought she sang the song better than Keisha - it seemed to suit her voice more.
Unless they actually give Keisha a decent song next week she will be in the sing off yet again.

19th April 2008, 19:24
Good grief, tonight's show was dull (or Dull! Dull!!Dull!!! as John Barrowman would probably say).
I'm not much bothered who wins anymore. The two best ones tonight were Jessie and Rachel, and I can't stand either of them!
I just can't seem to get interested in this one, not like the Maria and Joseph ones where it mattered to me who won. This one, I don't really care. I think I'm still watching out of habit.

Shock result tonight! I fully expected Keisha to be in the sing off yet again, and she wasn't, it was Ashley and Francesca. I thought that Ashley had no chance, as Lloyd Webber said last night that he didn't rate her voice. But lo and behold, he said he'd taken the views of the panel into consideration and he saved Ashley! I was very surprised. I do like Ashley's voice, so I don't know why he doesn't like it. Oh well. :)

5th May 2008, 17:07
What did you lot think about the result on sunday there?
It was a very poor result.
Poor Sarah, sings with the boys and then it's bye-bye.
Was inevitable when it was her and Rachel in the sing-off.
Much as I really like Rachel, I'm quite bored of her now. And Jessie with her Elvis lip (although she was great with this weeks song) and Super-Sam.
I think I just like the interesting characters. I don't count Jodie as one of those though
Another travesty of a result! That's almost all my favourites gone now Sarah's gone. There was no way she deserved to go, but I just had a feeling when she got picked to perform with the Olivers. She has a lovely voice, but some of the panel had it in for her from the start. For goodness' sake, she had to dye her hair darker before they started taking her seriously! Then last night she was accused of having limited facial expressions.
I honestly think Lloyd Webber sabotaged her somewhat with the **** song he made her sing. She did an excellent job with it, but it's still a rubbish song. And Lloyd Webber said she sang it exactly how he wanted her to sing it and then still got rid of her! She was never going to please them.
I truely cannot understand what the panel see in Jessie and Rachel, they really are nothing special. I think it should have been Niamh who went.
happyanddandy
5th May 2008, 19:02
Niamh shouts - she doesn't sing and her voice is harsh to go with her harsh face .
The one who is standing out for me - not very far ahead of the rest is Sam.
Jessie - the Judy Garland song was ghastly and they said it was the best in the series :lurker:
Ashley - who should have gone weeks ago did a great version of 'Big Spender' and got mediocre responses.
Bah! Sack them all!
I agree, H and D! Barry Humphries is just a letch - when Sam's on he's positively drooling, Homer Simpson style! *shudder*
I've always liked Ashley, though she isn't popular. I think she's a really good singer, with a good range (most of them can belt out the high notes, but cannot sing low notes very well). She's my only favourite left now, so I fully expect her to go next week!
And I forgot to say that Jodie is another one that I really can't understand her popularity. She's over the top with her singing and looks about 45 years old.

I like Jessie and Samantha . Ashley is getting better each week.
And I forgot to say that Jodie is another one that I really can't understand her popularity. She's over the top with her singing and looks about 45 years old.
I think people view her as 'ours' as she is pretty well the only one we've seen right from the very get go.
Even Jessie we didn't get to know until a little later. Some of the others I hadn't a clue about until they appeared on the live shows! :irked:
But yes, Jodie is awful. Her over the top expressions of solidarity with the outgoing singer when we all know she must be thinking 'well that's me one step closer'.
As I typed that I could hear DVO and John Botoxman on Ready Steady Cook
Slightly off topic (sorry) but with ~V~ mentioning JB's Botox, I have to say that he's ruining his looks. His face looks plastic and shiny now. What an idiot. And for an actor, who needs to express emotion through facial expressions, to paralyse his facial muscles voluntarily? I just don't get it.
thelastwatcher33
7th May 2008, 20:24
I know what you mean and its not like he (JB) needs it hes been appearing in roles where being wrinkle free isnt exactly a priority I still like him though! As for Jesse shes good but I dont think shes Nancy and the "Elvis" lip thing is so annoying shes does the same kind of preformance whatever song shes given. I dont understand Jodies popularity either shes just good cabaret. BH is a bit of a leer, I realise hes got stage experience but was there no one else they could get? ( Apologies for rant  )
Thoughts on tonight...
I liked Ashley, Samantha and Rachel the best. Jessie was completely unintelligible - I couldn't make out most of what she was singing. There was another one who was exactly the same (can't remember who now), but John Barrowman said he could hear every word!
In general, the panel seem to think the exact opposite to me! And they really hate Ashley, who I quite like.
And what's going on with John Barrowman's looks? What's he done to his hair? It looked awful. What with the hair, the fake tan and the Botox, he's looking less and less attractive and more like a plastic Action Man.

Ashley is the one I would be pleased to see the back of.
Well, you'll all be pleased then. *sulks* I must be the only person on here who likes Ashley! I think she has a really good voice. When she was in the sing-off, I knew she'd be out, as Lloyd Webber was never going to save her. She sang the song far better than Niamh, but of course Lloyd Webber saved Niamh, saying that Ashley was "slightly out of tune". What?! I don't think she was out of tune at all.
The only slightly bad thing about Ashley was that she did have a bit of a psychotic death stare thing going on sometimes!
That's all my favourites gone now. The panel seem to say the complete opposite of what I think, yet I chose Lee Mead and Connie Fisher from the first programmes, so feel I can spot talent a bit! None of those left for Nancy really stand out. Rachel has grown on me, and Samantha is OK, but that's it. No doubt one of those will be going next week!

She at the end when the person leaving she got to sing that song at the end. It must be upsetting for them
I didn't like Niamh or Samantha's singing tonight and I hope it's them in the sing off. It might be Niamh, but it certainly won't be Samantha, as she's the one the panel love. I thought her singing was under par tonight - she couldn't sing the low notes in her song and just "talked" them instead.
I thought Jodie and Rachel were good tonight, and I don't even like Jodie much! Which Nancy sang "I Will Always Love You?" tonight? Because that is one of my most loathed songs ever, I always have to turn the radio off if that song comes on, but whoever sang it made it much less horrible than usual.

Rachel's Cabaret song was excellent - finally the panel have noticed that she is good. Samantha was quite good, but I found Jodie a bit boring tonight (could have been the song she had). Jessie should go, I'm afraid. The others are much better than her.
Pretty well agree Mia.
Jessie drives me mad the way she sings out of the side of her face. At first I thought she was doing it because that's where the mic is and she thought she had to. She still does it though so it must just be the way she is. She seems to be a bit of a diva too.
At the beginning I saw Rachel and thought 'Here we go, another pro like Connie and Lee all lined up to make it look like a competition'.
Now she's the only one I like left!
Sam's sweet but I think she's a bit too green behind the ears and Jodie is a bit too much of a drama queen for my tastes. I can't get the image out of my head that she should be on a karaoke stage singing 'I Will Survive' to all her gay best friends

Couldn't agree more
Feel like I've wasted the last weeks watching (but then remembered I didn't vote!)
Exactly, Louise!
OK, I'm ready to rant now! What the :censored: just happened tonight? How the :censored: is Jessie still there? She's rubbish compared to the others! Even the panel thought so! When Rachel was announced to be in the sing-off, I was praying it would be with Jessie - then she would have been saved. I knew that if it was with Samantha, then he would save Samantha. My heart just sank.
Now, Samantha is very good. She is a good singer, but she cannot sing low notes very well. She does not show as much emotion when she is singing as Rachel, and she is not as good an actress. I think this is because of her age, and she will improve. Also, she was the least popular with the audience vote. Rachel, however, is an excellent singer (can sing high and low notes easily) and a good actress. Her performance of Cabaret was outstanding last night. So where's the :censored: logic?! Could it possibly be that Samantha is very good looking? Surely not.
The only explanation for Jessie getting through is that the audience felt sorry for her and voted for the underdog.
Well, I wish them good luck with this production of Oliver! - they've systematically got rid of the best people. Connie was perfect for Maria, Lee was perfect for Joseph, but none of the remaining girls are perfect for Nancy. I look forward to seeing the reviews for the eventual winner's performance.

I didnt watch tonight and boy am I glad, I cant believe they voted Rachel off! I agree Jessie has a long way to come and is one of the weakest but on the other hand the panel treated her in an appalling way. She annoyed me from the start, the small town girl, top o' the morning act was tres irritating but for John to attack her like he did saying she was like a fish "flip floppin around on deck", when he was commenting on another performance was terrible. That got people backs up and made them vote for her. I mean both he and Denise have it in for her but they are too harsh in their comments to seem fair hence under dog status for Jessie.
Also think Jodie is over rated, just cant see her as Nancy. Rant over (for now ;)).

I honestly think that for the first time, the show hasn't worked. They've taken a risk every time, but have been lucky. I loved the first two shows, but have completely lost interest in this one.
I agree Michelle
I even remember the furore when the seemingly most popular of the potential Nancys (at the time) was kicked out at a fairly early stage. (The East End Nancy girl) It just seems that they've mesed it up totally.
I think they got the wrong Olivers too but ...
Maybe it's the Cameron MacKintosh thing?

Maybe ALW will do a Simon Cowell on it and realise hes made a mistake before its too late and get Rachel back, (although where is young Ray off X factor now). I think you're both right, they were lucky with the first two shows.

They got the right olivers.
I didn't think so.
Much as I love the little Welsh boy's singing voice, acting ability, etc I could hardly understand a word he says

I like Gwion ( my view only) I do have to admit the song this weekend you could hear him fine.
I honestly think that for the first time, the show hasn't worked.
I've thought this from the beginning, and I think the main reason is that they are not casting the lead role (talking about the adults here). Maria in The Sound of Music is the lead, so is Joseph in Joseph... The main role in Oliver! is Oliver himself; the rest of the cast is more an ensemble, of which Nancy is just a part. They would probably have been better just concentrating on the Olivers for the show, or picking another musical. I would like to see them cast Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady (though that is my favourite musical!)
I think they got the wrong Olivers too but ...
I don't think Gwion is up to the singing standard of the other two winners, it really showed when they were singing Where is Love.

I think Jodie will win it cos she the oldest. Would like Jessie.
I have to say i love Gwion voice.
I just don't know what's going on with this show - Jessie has just been put through while Samantha has been kicked out.
For weeks now, the panel and Lloyd Webber have been slagging Jessie off and saying she is not Nancy - tonight they're singing her praises and saying she should win. I don't know if they're trying a reverse psychology thing, and hoping that if they praise her people won't vote for her because they won't think she needs the votes.
Whatever, another excellent singer has gone out tonight. The final is now between Jodie and Jessie, and I think it will be a big mistake if Jessie wins.

Hurrah - I'm glad Jodie won. :D
I thought Jessie was the best I've ever seen her though, so fair play to her too.
I'm very pleasantly surprised - I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Jessie would win. Hurrah for Jodie! :D John and Denise were very pleased too. (JB was all teary, but his botox wouldn't let him cry!! )
As lovesreading said though, all the best ones went out. I don't mind Jodie, but I liked Sarah, Rachel and Ashley too.
I'm quite relieved it's all over, to be honest!
Shall we start taking bets on which role they're going to cast next? It's got to be a male role, I would think, as they go alternately. Can't think of one...

It was a pointless act - a boy so called dancing - Britain has no talent or taste or class!!
Gin the dog or the violinists should have won :smile2:

It was just dancing, as far as I'm concerned - I loved the four girls with their modern classical instruments. :D
I've said all the way through this one.. take the kids out.. give them their own show if necessary, but as it is, it's not fair on the adults.

I'd love them to do a Phantom one (Ghost of a chance?!) or Mamma Mia.

I'm sure I read that ALW said he's probably not going to do one next year.. and if he does, it might be in America.
He's also launching a sequel to Phantom!

Based onwhat I saw on Saturday while at H&D's (I wouldnt bother otherwise) Britain has got NO talent whatsoever and the people who voted have no taste and no idea what real music is. Just my opinion so dont go throwing bottles at me.

I will disagree with you though! ;) I completely disagreed with the final voting, but there were a couple of good singers.. the girl in particular sounded great to me, and the fours girls withe the instruments were obviously talented.

See, that's why I don't watch 'talent' or 'reality' shows. If these people did have talent, they'd make it on their own without going through elimination rounds on the tellybox. And a lot of people in second place have made more of a career than the so-called winners. Who remembers the winner of the X-Factor or Pop Idol?
And reality shows just aren't real. The outcomes are manipulated for the sake of ratings.
And don't even get me started on phone-in rip-offs!
I'd rather read a book, supergran!

Ah, but people have made a career after appearing on some of these shows.. whether they came first or second! ;) I agree that the voting is just a joke.. whether it's people with little taste, but lots of credit on their phone, or whether they are fixed, something goes wrong.
Will Young - my hero

Someone at work said this don't know if there any truth in it.
That girl with fraye( not sure how to spell) Has got a record deal with Simon owell.

Michelle, yes I agree with you, the young lady of 12 years was a very good singer (I sang on the stage myself at that tender age and went in for talent contests too). Although I think the violinists could play well, I prefer my violinists not to be pop artists. Another good contestant was the young boy singer. But that's what I mean you see - the boy who won it was total rubbish and so were all the rest and proves the type of people who are voting are empty headed idiots. Again just my opinion.
