Anyone know this book?

When I was at school we had an author visit. I can't remember if it was Michael Rosen or Michael Morpurgo, but he was telling us or maybe reading an extract of a book about a man who lived on or near a beach and collected driftwood(?) and carved things out of them and I think a kid befriended him.

It’s all very vague but I’m sure it was real.

Any clues? Please?? LOL!

Nope not that one but you're a genius anyway! That page had a link to Morpurgo's Why the Whales came and that was it! As soon as I clicked on it I knew it. The Birdman name is too distinct to not ring bells. Can't remember if my description is in anyway acurate but now I know the title I can read it and find out. Thank you so much! you're a star!!!!
