When I am reading a topic the last post show up first rather than the 1st post so I am reading the topic backwards. How can I change this please?

Go into User CP, then choose Edit Options. Scroll down till you reach Thread Display Mode and choose the option that says Linear - Oldest First. Now when you go to the threads, they should be in date order with the oldest post being the first one you see.:D

I'm pretty sure that that should be the default for everyone.. were all sections like that, and did you change anything during registration? If not, I need to investigate. Thanks.

Aw, c'mon - reading the messages backwards is much more fun. Though, I do love dredging up topics that have been collecting dust for two years!

I do love dredging up topics that have been collecting dust for two years! And it's always welcome to get a fresh point of view on one of the older topics - it can get a whole new conversation going! :)

Pretty sure i didn't change anything during registration and it was happening with every thread.

I also get the last post first - I will now change it - I thought it was odd!

Michelle

It doesn't look as if I can change it anywhere, which means it was set that way when the forum was set up.. how odd that I never noticed. it may be possible to change it through the database.. I shall find out.

Do you mean that when you click you are sent to the last message posted? That's how I get them, but to me that makes sense - as it is the message that I want to read. you can still choose to see the different pages if you want...

Michelle

I think they mean that when they look at a thread, it starts with the newest post, and the oldest is at the bottom. I have it the other way round, but it appears that that may be the default.

Maureen
3rd April 2007, 17:52
No, I don't have it like that, and I'm sure I did not change the settings, I have the newest post at the bottom.

Michelle

It may have been that members from the old board had their settings retained when we moved over.. new members joining could be different.

If someone replied to a message that goes to the top.
Whoever started the topic that message goes last.

That the way i get it.

I just joined a few days ago, and all the new messages were appearing on the first pages of a thread, with the older ones on the last pages. That was the default setting; I changed it as I prefer it the other way around.

No.. I'm pretty sure I changed it when we moved.

Well, as I totally confuddled now, I think the best thing is if members take a look at the options in their CP, and set it the way they prefer. :D

I thought that was normal  It's what happens on the Neighbours site too! I find it easier because it's normally a recent post that needs responding to.

You do all know that if you click on this symbol http://bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/images/buttons/firstnew.gif, it will take you to the latest unread post, no matter where it is?

I knew that, but I just find it helpful to have the most recent posts under where I'm typing.

I guess it's just what you get used to.

another useful tool worth mentioning is the sub-forums acessable from the "front" page - there is a square (red if there are unread posts )....and the name of the subforum next to it.....and if you click on it you are immediately whisked away to the desired floor......:D

Megan go to user cp which is on the blue thing under home
Then go to Edit options then scroll down to Thread Display Options ( 3 box) Then thread display mode then change that to linear (oldest first) that should help

Yeah, shocked me at first. I've been used to forums for a long while now and i visit quite a few. This is the first one where the most recent reply goes to the front. Very odd. Though good i guess. Will take some getting used to. :)

Did anyone else find it strange on this forum?

Spooncat

Yes I found it strange - still do! :)

This is how to change it if you want.

Go to User Cp which is at the top then go to

Edit options
Thread Display Options
Thread Display Mode
then change to Liner oldest first.

Hope that helps

I was tempted to leave it as it is, y'know that's how the forum is and all....but i've changed it. It just seems easier for me. :)

Kell

I certainly have the new messages coming up at the end with the older ones way back at the start of the thread - I just find it easier that way. :D

FishAndChips

It's only ever been that way for me.

Michelle

Well, as before, I'm still very confused about this.. everyone seems to have different!

Kylie
22nd June 2008, 05:29
The newest messages appear at the end for me. I thought it was the default; I certainly don't remember ever changing it, although it's possible I did because I don't like newer posts appearing first.

Echo
22nd June 2008, 05:45
It could be that the default setting changed from Oldest First to Newest First when we had our big update. It's easy to change, anyhow.

Michelle
22nd June 2008, 08:21
Nope, I doubt the recent update would have changed a default. All I can say is that when I go to my 'Forum Manager', they are all set up to have the most recent post at the end. The only thing that may be overriding that is a setting in the database.. maybe there's something that sets the default for everyone on registration.

When I get a moment, I'll add something to one of the threads in Announcements, telling people how to change it.

Loopyloo100

Mine was originally back to front too, but I did find the setting after help from the oh- I couldn't see it for looking!
