Groups: what are they, how do you join them and can you create them?

I'm not sure what you mean?

Well, on the bit when you click on a username, one of the bits is when it says "This member is not a member of any groups" (well that's what it says on mine) and I just wanted to know what they were etc

I don't know, but I'm not a member of any groups either. I expect it comes with the software package but that it's not enabled because we don't need it.

I'm sure Michelle will be able to explain more. :)

I can only guess.

I would think that if this forum was huge that there might be a need for some sub-sets; fans of Harry Potter, for example.

I can also imagine a group for just moderators, a place where all the info is kept for easy access but not open to the public.

I imagine if one topic begins to dominate this forum, then some groups will pop up.

Thanks.

I think I was actually a member of a group on another forum hosted by the same people, I've just remembered. I think only mods can set them up, and it's basically you have to be a member of a group to post, read posts, and have the unread posts show up on your unread posts thing.

:lol:I've gone from asking for help to giving it!

We already use plenty of usergroups on here, including the groups that you move into when you have so many posts (to allow you certain increased privileges etc) Moderators, Premium Members etc.. they are all set by myself, and automatically controlled by the software.

Public groups are ones that members can choose to join.. I haven't as yet seen a need for one.

Does that answer your question?

Yes, thanks Michelle. :)
