With Harry Potter being THE book to buy at the moment, and lots of pre-order offers around, I was wondering where members will be buying theirs, and what offers/deals they've found?

I'd be interested in hearing where people think the best deals are. It's out just after I've moved so I was going to get it as a 'well done' present to myself (sad I know but its as good an excuse as any :) ). Anyway, no idea where the best deals are so any help in that direction is most appreciated!

I've always got mine on the day of release in one of my local shops, but this year I decided to just pre-order it from Amazon - £8.99.

I'm really worried about pre-ordering in case it doesn't arrive on the Saturday. Then I'd have to wait for two whole days - I won't be able to start it until after 2pm as it is!

That's what I was worried about so I checked things out with people who preordered the other ones from Amazon and they all said that they received it on the day of release which is what Amazon guarantees.

sad I know
In what way??
OH is taking me to Rome for my birthday on 22nd July..... fabulous trip of a lifetime, have been promising it for years, my trouble, will I have finished it before I go, so am going alone at midnight to get it and then reading it that night so I can relax while away!! The consequence of THIS is no sleep that night and also its my birthday so no celebrations for me I'll be queueing

Wow, I forgot some shops open at midnight. With the time difference, it gets released at 9am here. It would be kind of cool to go out at midnight and buy it - it would make the event a bit more exciting.
I pre-ordered the last book and had to wait in line for almost an hour to pick it up while people who hadn't pre-ordered were able to just walk in off the street and buy one. :irked: This time I'm just going to take my chances and get it on the day. One local chain usually has it the cheapest and in abundance so I should be OK.
I know if you pre-order from Borders here, you get a little fluffy white owl free (stuffed, not real), but I don't have a Borders near me. That Amazon price sounds pretty cheap.

I must admit when 'Order of the Phoenix' came out I just walked into Waterstones and bought it. Ok so the queue was slightly longer than usual but at worst there was only about 5 other people in front of me.
What I remember about the last one though is that it came out the summer I moved here. Dad and I bought our copies the weekend he came to stay and help put up curtain rails and other useful stuff (a previous tenant had ripped out all the curtain rails, taken the connection for the washing machine, etc etc really stripped the house). We both sat and read it simultaneously but I finished half a day before he did.
I'm planning on going out bright and early on the Saturday to get as much shopping done before the crowds arrive for T4's Party on the Beach that weekend. I'll probably buy it then at which ever is the cheapest shop I see whilst on my way round.

My Smiths had an offer to pre-order and get £10. However, I ordered mine on the Smith's website because it was my birthday present from OH and it was easier to go online than go to the shop. He will have to come to the shop with me on the day though. I'm getting it delivered there (no postage!).
I kept meaning to pre-order mines but I forgot, so I am buying it from Asda, they usually sell it slightly cheaper x
WH Smith have an offer that if you pre-order from them (£3 deposit) you get £10 of vouchers for free! That seems like a pretty good deal - you could use that to get two or three other books! :)
Thanks for that Kell, I will heading to WH Smith x

Ah, but are they general vouchers, vouchers off a specific object, or even those really annoying ones that offer £1 off if you spend £50!?

Pre ordered mine for £8.99 from Waterstones because ... I like the carpet in their shop and its in a nicer bit of Merry Hill than Smiths when I am there at midnight!

 I was just imagining Borders trying to control 100s of owls!
I think I'm going to get mine at Tesco when I finish work - if there are any left at 2pm!

Wow, it's definitely going to be a special day! Although you might have to wait a couple of days for my birthday wishes because I'll be too busy with my head in the new Harry Potter book to visit the forum!
I stupidly arranged to go away for a week from the day after the book is released. I was excitedly planning a day of browsing in some excellent bookshops before I realised what I'd done. Now I have to decide whether I can put off finding out the ending for a day while I look around. Why does life have to be so hard? ;)
Ah, but are they general vouchers, vouchers off a specific object, or even those really annoying ones that offer £1 off if you spend £50!? It just says you get £10 of free vouchers, so I would assume you get handed a £10 WH Smith voucher to spend how you like it. But even if it was a specified voucher, I think it would more than likely be for books - which nobody here is likely to complain about - LOL! Really though, I think it's just general vouchers that you can spend on anything - it certainly seems like a pretty good deal to me - even if you pay the full price for the book you can pick up a couple of other books with the voucher and you're essentially getting them for free. :)

During my packing I came across the £10 voucher booklet I got given last time around... I hadn't sued it because they were the sort of 'spend £x and get 50p off' kind of things or they were for very specific types of books I don't tend to buy like Lonely Planet guides or magazines or something. Plus unlike gift tokens they had limited amount of time in which you could use them. I'll just stick to wandering into the first shop selling it on Saturday morning....

I've pre-ordered from Amazon. I did that for the last book and it came at 8am.
If it doesn't come though, or if I miss it (I will not be waiting till Monday) I will be forcing my dad to drive me around till I get my hands on a copy even if I have to beat 5 year olds out of my path.

I've got it on order at Waterstones - they are guaranteeing it at half price. I'm also going to their launch party which starts at 9pm and finishes at 1am, so am looking forward to that.

Bloomsbury halts delivery of stock to ASDA due to 'non payment' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6902031.stm) - I thought I'd post here in case anyone is planning on buying their copy from them.
I pre-ordered mine from Amazon for £8.99. What's worrying me is being able to read it before I accidentally read the inevitable spoilers that will appear in the newspapers courtesy of some 8 year old kid who read it in 45 minutes! "Harry/Voldemort/Hermione/Ron dies!" Arrghh! Don't tell me! Iwant to find out for myself please.

17th July 2007, 15:03
LOL as I won't have much internet access from tomorrow and I hardly buy papers I needn't worry too much about spoilers. I tend to be in my own little world anyway.... :)

I heard about Asda's delivery being stopped, that is going to be a big blow for them.
Kell
17th July 2007, 18:40
I was reading that article about what Asda said and they were right - £18 is an extortionate price for a hardback book - especially one primarily aimed at the youth market. I can't afford that price myself and I work full time! Hence, I went for the wonderful £8.99 offer at nasty old Waterstones because it was the cheapest I spotted. If Fopp hadn't gone bust, I probably would have got it there instead, as they always had cheapo prices.
Publishers should really think about that kind of thing though - it's supposed to be a good thing to encourage kids to read, but then to publish books and charge a fortune for them is rather low.
Janet
17th July 2007, 19:10
The ASDA deal has been restored, apparently. :)
I will be getting mine in Tesco. However, it will take me several days to read it, so I'm worried about getting spoiled too.
I managed to avoid the big spoiler in the last book, so hopefully I'll do it this time!
*crosses fingers*

Strangely, despite coming to the books late I managed to avoid all the spoilers. Yes, I had watched the first three films before I started reading them, but I didn't hear any of the spoilers before seeing those, and not one of the books has been ruined for me by catching spoilers by accident - I've been very lucky. Then again, I don't watch much TV or listen to the radio, and I'm very careful online about not looking at stuff that has anything to do with the book in question. Once it's released, I'll be avoiding speaking to anyone who says they're reading it until i'm done myself!

I'm actually going to a midnight release with one of my friends, and I'm really looking forward to it. I've never been to a midnight release before, and I just love the fact that so many people go out in the middle of the night to get a book. Sadly there aren't many midnight releases besides Harry Potter, so I didn't want to miss this one out. Though I'm slightly afraid someone's going to read the last page, or any page, and yell out spoilers.
Michelle
18th July 2007, 15:33
With all this talk of reading the last page, giving spoilers etc.. I wonder how many people actually enjoy the reading experience, and how many just want to know how it ends, or who gets killed? I still say that this series wouldn't have been quite so popular without the right publicity.

That's my worst fear too etheline! I'm seriously considering taking my iPod and listening to some music or something to drown out any noises. Then I'll be shutting myself away for a few days so I won't have to worry after that.

I just put one on reserve at Barnes & Noble for $20. But I've got a membership, so I got %40 off.
The spoilers thing is the only reason I bothered to preorder a copy. I'm really not much of a Harry Potter fan--I mean it's alright and everything, just not my favorite--but if I plan to read something I hate to have it spoiled for me. Makes me wonder how many other people are preordering out of fear from the masses as well. I think, like many people, I'm just going to lock myself away from the internet until I can read it so that I won't have to worry about spoilage.

Kasei, I'm exactly the same as you, and I think I said the same thing. I predict sales for this one will be the hugest yet, and alot will be people wanting to read the answers / ending before they find out elsewhere.

I'll be picking up my copy at some point this morning. My Mam and Pappy are up visiting and are calling for me at about 10am, so I'll be heading round to Waterstones to pick it up shortly afterwards.
I have to say, all those folks that started queueing two days beforehand - seems to me they need to get lives! Everyone knew you could pre-order it, so there was no chance you'd have to go without, and queuing for two days just be pick it up at midnight is a bit sad really. By all means nip along a couple of HOURS beforehand to make sure you'll get in, but DAYS? How do these people get to the bathroom? Or wash? They must have been a bit whiffy by the time they got into the shops!

I have never read a Harry Potter book or seen any of the films as I am saving them to enjoy them with my daughter who is just 4 at the moment.
I am holding out to buy a complete box set of all 7 books so if anyone finds one I would really appreciate if you could let me know?
Have checked a few places but can only find a 6 book set at the moment.
Thanks Kx
