OK, so there were two "yes" and nine "maybe" votes for a comparative reading circle, so now I put to you a few choices to see if anyone would be interested in trying out one of the following for our first CRC:

Bang-Rat-Tat-Tat-Boom!: M*A*S*H by William E Butterworth & Richard Hooker* vs. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller

King of the Swingers: Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs vs. The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling

Flower and Willow World: Autobiography of a Geisha by Sayo Masuda vs. Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki

Classic Vampires: Dracula by Bram Stoker vs. Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu

* There are 12 M*A*S*H books, so I would leave it to Wrath (who suggested this on) to decide which one.

Cast your vote and we'll see how we go!

NOTE, THE 2ND ONE ON THE POLL SHOULD ACTUALLY READ "KING OF THE SWINGERS" (IT WON'T LET ME GO BACK IN TO ADJUST IT!)

ETA: As it looks like we have a few people interested, I'll leave the poll open till Sunday night and then everyone who wants to take part will be able to get hold of one or the other books to start in July.

I had no idea there were others beyond the original -- I'm a-thinking that the original will do just fine.

Here's a bit from wikipedia:
M*A*S*H: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, the original novel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novel) that inspired the M*A*S*H film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%2AA%2AS%2AH_%28film%29) and TV series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%2AA%2AS%2AH_%28TV_series%29), was written by Richard Hooker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._Richard_Hornberger), himself a former military surgeon, and was about a fictional U.S. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_America) Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Army_Surgical_Hospital) in Korea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korea) during the Korean War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_War). It was originally published in 1968 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968).
Hooker followed the novel with several sequels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%2AA%2AS%2AH_%28novels%29), most of them ghostwritten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostwriter).

Honestly I don't think we can miss with any of the choices, they look swell to me.
However the vote turns out: count me in.

Thanks, Wrath - I had a feeling you'd be up for the challenge! :) I'll certainly be taking part in any of the ones chosen, so that makes a minimum of two of us at any rate - hurrah!

I voted for the jungle ones in the end. I've always wanted to read the Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling (I loved the Disney cartoon version). I'd never thought of reading Tarzan, but now I want to!!

I'd be least interested in the war ones. I've already read Catch-22 and while I loved it, I attempted a re-read and was less interested second time around. It's also pretty long. I didn't like the film of MASH at all so wouldn't be interested in reading the book. (The series was good as far as I remember though, I was pretty young when it was on.)

Either vampires or geishas sounds great though!

I meant to close this thread last night, but got sidetracked.

It looks as if we have a winner - although it was very close!

The first Comparative Reading Circle will be Classic Vampires. The two books under discussion will be Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu and Dracula by Bram Stoker.

I hope that you'll all join me over the next couple of months and enjoy these two classic novels.
