Since joining BCF my reading mojo has increased. Up until then I had bursts of reading then not touch a book for months, now I constantly have a book on the go.

Ooh definitely! I even lost it a bit at the beginning of this week, but have now found it again.
I think reading a really cracking book helps the mojo along :)

Yes this happens, I think, to all of us. I too, lost mine a few days ago but got it back. Sometimes it goes for weeks. A great book does help too.

Yes unfortunately it does sometimes go. Hopefully not for too long. A really good book does help. The thing is not to worry.:D

Happens to me occasionally too. I often go off reading for a few days, usually when the book I'm reading is mediocre. If it's a very good book, then no, I don't lose my mojo.
I'm suffering from a bit of a wobbly mojo at the moment, but that's due to the fact that the book and audio book I'm currently reading and listening to aren't really grabbing me much. To have two at once is hitting my mojo quite hard. I had a bit of a mojo-loss a while back, but I seem to be back on track again now (apart from this little semi-blip).

Kell, you need to get to No Human's Involved - I'm loving it! :)
Kell, you need to get to No Human's Involved - I'm loving it! :)I bought it last weekend - am dying to read it, but I've set myself a schedule of certain books I need to read this month - After I finish my reading circle books (the last one is The Bell Jar, which I'm reading now), I need to read Jane Eyre, so I can read The Eyre Affair. Then I need to read a chunk. After THAT, I can read No Humans Involved and Broken Skin (by Stuart MacBride). See how my mojo is well and truly tickled by that line-up!

I lost my mojo for at least a week last month when I was sick. Since then I've been reading much more than I usually would (probably trying to make up for lost time). I hope I don't overdo it and lose it again - I have too many books that need to be read!

okay I am obviously not so cool - what is mojo? Apart from a sweet I used to eat as a kid.
I presume its something about motivation for reading?
I am a plodder, I read every day and just plod on with whatever I have selected to read - I would rarely stop reading something - last one I abandoned was 'The Undomestic Goddess' - contrived and dull - how did it stay at No 1 bestseller list for so long? :smile2:

I have lost my mojo several times in the last year, usually for two or three weeks at a time. Then I go mad reading anything and everything , catching up for lost time. There is not enough time, alas for reading and writing! And art, and gardening, and crafts and music etc...sob.
Currently reading The Bell Jar. I think the mojo will stay for that, judging by the first few pages.

I didn't know either!! OH says it's the power / motivation to do something - it's taken from a film. I think he said from an Austin Powers one.

I am one of the lucky ones I guess. I read everyday without fail. The only times when my reading drops to a lower level is when I am dog-tired or ill, even then I aim for about 30 pages.
It makes me feel faint at the sheer thought of losing my mojo

I try and read 50 a day - this makes me pick the book up even if I've not got long because it might mean getting through just 10. I've noticed that some books I can read at a page a minute and most at a page every 2 mins.
Icecream
12th May 2007, 21:52
happyanddandy, yes, mojo is, I believe, taken from Austin Powers, when he loses his mojo.
I am not doing very well with my current book, but I think I am just feeling generally unmotivated at the moment. I'm feeling guilty about not doing housework, even though I am mostly doing what I want to, and I don't get the time to read much. I am very much enjoying the book now..
Angel
12th May 2007, 21:56
As a rule I try to get in as much as possible 30 pages on a bad day and 250 on a very good. Today I've read 100 pages so far.........
Icecream
12th May 2007, 22:01
I usually divide my books into daily readings and try to get 30 or 50, sometimes just 20 pages a day. It doesn't always work, but sometimes does.. And I also find I can read a page in one/two mins..

I find it keeps the momentum going.
I've lost the reading bug at the moment, but I think that is probably due to most of my time being taken up by revision. Once I have spent most of the day revising, I usually don't feel like reading anything else.
I'll probably get back to reading once the exams are over.

Oh yes Liz, that's completely normal - I used to feel like my brain would explode if I tried to read anything on top of my revision!
But it's amazing how you soon want to get back to reading - especially since it's of your own choice :)

last year for about 10 months, first time it ever happened, I have to say I found it very distressing ,my mother threatened to have me booked in somewhere, my husband was rather pleased he said i actually listened to him for a change ( i didnt )so i have been taking it slowly with books now.
About a year and a half ago I lost my reading mojo, then I joined here months later and it slowly but surely came back x

Well I can honestly say I have never lost my reading mojo and never imagined there was such a thing! I always have a book on the go. It's the most natural thing in the world for me! I might give up on a particular book but I always find something else to read instead. :readingtwo:
But I don't make myself read a set amount or anything. I just read a few pages or so depending on how much time I've got then settle down for a longer read at the end of the day before switching off the light.:sleeping-smiley-009

When I went to uni I kinda stopped completely. For two years I must have read about four books. I just didn't have time and then I lost concentration. Didn't actually stop me buying them though.
But since just before christmas I started reading a lot again, in libraries. I'm wondering if my reading mojo will start to lack when I move home... there isn't really any place to go to read around here. Local library is like a children's playground and the coffee is terrible. The cafes and places are always too cramped. :(

I lose my reading mojo when I have a lot of school work, it's really sad, but all I can think about is school work and when that is done I'm just too tired. I think I may have one of those periods right now. I do want to read but I can't bring myself to do it, because I know that I have other things to do. It's awful.

I also stopped reading more or less altogether while at uni. I read LOTR and the Harry Potters, plus Susan Howatch's Heartbreaker, and a few others I think.

I lose it now and again..but I think it has to do with what you are reading at the moment as well. When I am trying to read a book that does not really grab my attention, I kind of lose interest, but still feel as if I have to "go through it!" sounds crazy when I see it in black and white, but it's a fact.

Very true Nici. I hardly read anything over the winter. I just couldn't get into anything (though I too was reading my magazines and the bible too). Raven Hart seems to have got me out of it, as I knew she would. Question is, where do I go next?
On second thoughts, I have joined a book ring on here I am rather looking forward too.

Usually if I loose my reading mojo, it due to the fact that I am stuck in a book that I no longer want to read. Usually if I put the book down and read something else, I can get back my mojo and usually pick the old book up later on to finish it.

In the past few years I have lost my reading mojo a lot, usually because I feel so tired or I feel guilty and think I should be working instead on lesson plans or marking. However I realised that I had to have a work/ life balance and since starting at my new school I have got better at enjoying a good book thus I haven't lost my mojo for a while lol! However it is frustrating when it happens, especially when you have shelves of books to choose from and nothing you fancy.

Kate, I have a book of short stories that I'm trying to review.. and it's not helped. I keep looking at all the books I have, and nothing appeals. Then, when I do try one, I read a couple of pages, sigh, and put it down. The only book I was enjoying, A Small Part of History.. I left at work, and won't get back until Monday!! :irked:

Oh dear, I hope you get your mojo back soon, Michelle! Maybe you just need a little break from reading (was that blasphemous?).
My mojo has been on the blink for a few weeks while I've been struggling with The Jungle Book. Now that I've finally finished I'm hoping it'll pick up again with my next read, although I'm a bit worried that this struggling will persist with my next read and maybe ruin the book for me when I would otherwise enjoy it. I might go for a Roald Dahl and see how things go from there.
I agree with Nici: maybe a re-read of a Raven Hart would help?

Now i just have to find a happy medium of them both!!!

Even though I don't get through masses of books, I have been steady in my reading since the beginning of the year. A good sign, as when I stop reading it's usually because there's too much in life (not the nice stuff!) going on.

My reading mojo has disappeared since Saturday and I'm not sure why - I'm enjoying the book I'm reading, but have been finding it difficult to concentrate. I thought I'd try an audio book when I'm travelling to and from work and I have been listening to Ken Follet's: Pillar of the Earth. I have actually been able to concentrate on that more and have really been getting into the story. I don't know how many hours I have yet to listen to though - probably about 38!

No, I mean the written book. I've been knitting since I was 7 yrs old and I used to do home work for a London based company. I find it really easy to do both - I always have. It really does pass the time, rows and pages!
