We did a poll on this a while ago, and there was a wide range of answers. It'll be interesting to find out if we still do. (I'll go count mine later.)

And how does that work exactly?

I have 12 on my shelf to read, and 18 that I want to get hold of, so that makes 20 altogether, and I am sure their is a couple more on my list (on my computer) tha I haven't put on here yet. My list keeps growing (thanks to this forum). I certainly want to read the second of Raven Hart's vampire books if I ever get the chance..

I was going to guess at 70, but then I counted them up. I have 62 books and 8 audio books, so I was spot on! I also have two more books on the way at the moment, so it'll be 72 when they arrive...

I think it's about the same amount as it was the last time - it seems I get more at the same rate as I get through them, and seeing as how I'm downloading audio books for free, there are always more audio books to get!

Ooh, and Dale owes me a book for Easter, so that'll be 73...

Loads. Too many to count really. My problem is that even though I have a lot of books on my bookshelf, I still borrow or buy others to read. :irked: I can't help it though; if I see something that looks interesting, I have to have it, even though I may not get around to reading it for a very long time. I mean I have books that I bought about 7 or 8 years ago, and have yet to read them.

I have a list of my books in a spreadsheet and just counted up the unread ones...107 :eek2:

And what's worse is that the spreadsheet is nowhere near complete. I think I could easily add an extra 30-40 unread books! Oh dear. I had no idea it'd gotten that bad.

But that's still not going to stop me from going to a huge book fair next week, where I expect to buy another 20 or more. Hey, the books will be dirt cheap and the money goes to a good cause, OK? :ontome:

I have six on my TBR pile!

Mostly since I just got back from the bookstore.
My intent was to just buy one or two, but I hurt my foot yesterday and was limping and it took a lot longer to weave through the store....so I kept picking them up.

I am reading Anne of Green Gables right now, next will be....

Sea Swept by Nora Roberts (KW's direction)
National Velvet by Enid Bagnold (continuing my Children's Classic series after Black Beauty, The Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables)
X-Rated Bloodsuckers by Mario Acevedo (blood sex and magic)
Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich
Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich

My latest buys are; "Karin Fossum's ""He Who Fears the Wolf" (Wonderfully suspenseful book, has anyone read it?), "When the Devil Holds the Candle" also by K. Fossum, Jeffrey Deaver "The Vanished Man" , and Vladamir Nabokov's "Pale Fire".

Exactly one month ago I had 62 books and 6 audio books, although I was anticipating some new ones arriving. Dale still hasn't bought me my Easter book yet - I flagged that problem up with him yesterday and he promises a book will be forthcoming shortly!

Anyway, since then I've read 10 and am moving onto my 11th, and also listened to 3 audio books and have started by 4th.

Mount TBR now numbers 72 and I have 9 audio books waiting (not including the one I'm currently listening to).

How on earth did I manage to gain more than I read? I don't remember getting hold of all those books! I know a couple of the ones I read were borrowed, but that's beside the point - argh! I really mustn't let Dale see this or he'll get more strict about the book embargo :lurker:

If I were to count all the books I WANT to read, there'd be literally thousands on my TBR list. So, only counting the unread books I have waiting, I have around 80-ish at the moment and that number will be increasing shortly as I have a birthday coming up and then Xmas is just around the corner. Although I read quite fast, I tend to acquire more books faster than I can read them (despite the embargo - hmmmmm!)

According to my notes, I have 233 books TBR. This covers almost my entire book collection (I suspect the actual total would be around 245, but then you can't really count the reference books so it'd still be around 233).

This also doesn't include ebooks, which I reckon would push the total up to around 400-500.

As happy as I am to have so many books to look forward to, I sometimes get a bit daunted ('when will I ever get to read them all?!!') and wish my TBR pile was around 60 or something. :o

I'm so nice knowing that there are other people like me out there

I have several different TBR piles.

The physical pile on my bedside table which accounts for library books TBR in the next 3 weeks and books I have acquired that have moved to the top of the list currently stands at 20.

I also have about 75 books on my bookshelves that still have to be read, which I shall take my time over.

Then there's the list of books I want to read but need to either buy or borrow from the library. That probably stands at about 100 at the moment.

So, almost 200.

prospero
7th April 2008, 23:06
Kylie - you might be interested in an idea I've had, then. To shrink my TBR pile I've often thought I should implement a 'buy one book for every three of my own I read' rule. I can read as many library books as I please but they don't count towards my 'three before you buy any more' count. We could support each other as we try to kick the habit.

Not that it's a bad thing, but if we buy faster than we can read, then we'll end up with houses full of books we haven't read, and that would mean they'd go to waste, practically.

Kylie
7th April 2008, 23:34
It's a good idea, Prospero, and one that I've tried to implement, but obviously I'm not strong enough. I'll try harder from now on I promise. And I'll start looking at each book I buy as a 'reward' for reading three others. ;)

prospero
7th April 2008, 23:39

That does include six library books but doesn't include some hidden boxes of books which is a mixture of read and unread and I have no chance of estimating how many are in there!

My TBR pile is small. Very small. But that's partly because I've been very good in the shops recently, and partly because I read all the easy stuff when it comes in.

The problem is that although there are probably only 7 or 8 books in the pile, those 7 or 8 books have been there for years. And even if I read nothing else it would probably be 6 or 9 months before the pile is reduced.

Vineland by Thomas Pynchon, which I've just started, has been sitting there since 2000, I think. The last Pynchon I read took me 4 months.

Also in the pile is Peter Ackroyd's London: A Biography, which is 1000 densely packed pages. I read the first 400 over the course of, again, 3 or 4 months, but then came to a juddering halt.

Independent People by Laxness is sitting there, and that's long, and apparently fairly slow and bleak, although atmospheric, and I fear will take me until the end of the decade.

There's The Travels Of Marco Polo, as in, in his words, which I really should read but will be terribly turgid.

There's an Iain Banks, the only vague hint of lightness sitting there, I think. A book on the recording of Kind of Blue, which I have no real interest in reading at all but which my mum gave me.

I'm sure there are a couple of other things, too, but I forget what.

I've just whittled down Mount TBR from 135 to 94. I decided there were books on there that I was never going to read after all, due to having gone right off the idea of them or them just not appealing quiter so much any more. I figure if there ARE any I want to go back to, I can always get them from the library. I decided I had to ditch some as I was running out of space on my TBR shelves again and I couldn't get moved on my desk. :(

Me too - I fell far less intimidated by Mount TBR these days (I only really began to feel overwhelmed by it when I got pregnant and realised I wasn't reading as much and wouldn't have the time to read so much once Tadpole arrives!). The Read 3, Buy 1 thing is REALLY working out well for me, as I'm saving up my "credits" for a while, so as not to add to the pile too much at the beginning - I want to see that list dwindle right down over the coming months so I can fel like I'm back on top of things again. :readingtwo:

Yes, I am freaky in many ways...but none that impact on my reading habits!

Usually I buy my books, but a strict budget (and the fact that my friend closed her book shop) means that I have to rely on the library. Unfortunately, I can't always get myself to the local library, and although hubby tries to pick things out for me, it's not the same as selecting them myself.

It's a terrible position to find myself in, so I'm reading my current book very slowly and savouring every word.

Innumerable! On top of the various things I find along the way, I have this great book that my mom gave me called The Well Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had by Susan Wise Bauer. It has a great list of fiction, biographies, histories, plays and poetry to read, and she shared how to read different types of works in order to absorb and learn the most from them. I sort of alternate between her suggested reading and the things that I want to read on my own.

"Mount TBR." I like that!

My Mt. TBR is about 30 high, down from a dismal 50. However, those that remain are the most daunting. But recently I decided not to buy any books until I have read everything, and reread my favourites.

I shall conquer Mt. TBR!

Tiresias
29th July 2008, 12:12
I think the best way to bring down Mt. TBR is this: By no means keep your unread books in the bookcase. Instead, keep them in a pile in the most conspicuous place you can find, whether it be your nightstand, coffee table, desk, or etc..

This works for a combination of reasons: Firstly, you will want to reduce clutter by reading the pile down to a more manageable size. Secondly, the more formidable the pile, the more it will silently admonish you every time you glance at it, which you will not be able to avoid doing, in view of its carefully selected prominence of place. And lastly, you will develop interest in the To-Be-Reads by casually glancing over them in your spare moments, as you will not doubt have occasion to do, given their geographical convenience.

Good luck.

They are all books I own and haven't got around to reading yet, or in a few cases, books that I read years ago and want to reread. My husband thinks it's quite funny really - I tend to buy 4 or 5 books a week every week! Although in recent weeks I have slowed down on my buying drastically. LOL When I nick onto an author I know I like, I'll buy a bunch of theirs, [especially if I see a pile of them at the second hand store in good condition] and then there are series. I've only read about 6 of the James Lee Burke detective {Robichaux}, but have the whole series, I think it's 20 something books. A major contributor to Mt. TBR is the second-hand bookshop, because when you pop in to "browse", there is a strong urge to pick up the inevitable finds at a good price, before someone else gets them.

Because i live in a non-English-speaking country, I have to order all my books online. Since moving here, all my new books are new and Mt. TBR has shrunken drastically.

It's good that you can actually get them delivered. I expect it's not cheap.

Tiresias

There's a very good distributor in Seoul. Shipping is free if you spend over 50,000 won (that's about 50 US dollars) and everything arrives within three weeks.

For a while I was getting books through Amazon and paying as much again for shipping and waiting up to 6 weeks. Grrrrr.

One advantage of ordering online is books arrive pristine and plastic-wrapped, whereas even a lot of new books at the bookshop are shopworn. And (as I said) the cost and inconvenience brings down Mt. TBR.

you could always join a site like Book mooch and swap some of your old books that you no longer want - you get books sent to you at no cost to yourself and gani points to "spend" on other bookks when you send books out as requested. You never have to pay any more than the postage on the books you send out. That could help cut down the costs a great deal for you. :)

This thread made me sad, it seems like other people have manageable TBRs, lists that can actually be shortened by reading 6 books.
On my TBR (which I don't have on me right now so this is a rough estimate) there are about 300 novels. I would also wish to read all of the novels on 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (so far I've read 39 of them), and as a fan of Gilmore Girls and Rory I would like to read all the books on Rory's list. I haven't counted them but I'd say there are about 100-140 books on it.

Edit: Maybe the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die marathon isn't realistic. Okay I won't count that one.
Instead, I remembered that I have about 50 books that I've bought and haven't added to my TBR list yet.

Why does everyone feel that they have to read this list? I honestly can't see why people are choosing their books just because some list tells them to!?

Anyway, frankie.. are all 300 ones you want to read soon, or do you have a 'priority' list? :)

Well, of course I don't feel that I have to read the 1001 books on that list just because there happens to be a book that recommends to do so :) But, I've been browsing through that list for many long hours and quite a lot of the books sound interesting and worth a read, or at least a try at it. Most of them are classics and they are on that list for a reason: at one point or another in history (or present) they have been appreciated as great works of literature.
Besides, many of the novels that appear on 1001 Books happen to be on my TBR list already for some other reason.

As for the other question, I don't have a priority list with the other ~300 books. Usually I go for the ones that I've bought most recently, or the ones that fit my current mood. But I really have to pick up the pace now with the list...

I heard about the Rory list, and what I liked was the way it linked a classic, old book with a new contemporary one. So you got to explore a theme from two very different point of views.

As for reading simply because it's on some list... I guess it's, in part, about curiosity. Why did this book make the cut? Why is this considered worth people's time? After all, from all the worlds literature 1001 books is very little! I also try to read some competition winners, simply for arguments sake, so I can go "yeah, good choice!" or "what on Earth were they thinking?? This is horrible!"

As for my TBR? No, no formed list. I'm working on that, though...

What's 'the Rory list'? Is it available online?

I'm marking off the 1001 books on that Excel spreadsheet that was linked somewhere. I've no intention of trying to read them all though - just the ones I like the sound of. I just happen to like lists! :D

Sure the Rory's list is online! I thought about including the url in my post, but because I'm a newbie here I wasn't sure if I was allowed to do that  But here's link to the list:

And for those who don't know Rory, she's a character in Gilmore Girls, a bookworm just like us :)

Thank you. :)

I've never seen the Gilmore Girls - in fact, I don't know what it is!

Gilmore Girls is only one of the best shows ever made! It's about a mother and daughter who are best friends living in a charming small town in the US, full of quirky characters. The writing is just brilliant.

ii and frankie, are you both on GoodReads? There is a Gilmore Girls discussion group that selects books from her list and compares them with other books. And there's also a 1001 Books discussion group. I don't really post in them but I love to read what everyone else is saying.

Thank you, Kylie. I might check that out. I recently decided to really "be" on Goodreads, instead of just having an account. A small attempt of cataloguing my books and getting some order to the chaos, I suppose.

Kylie no I'm not on GoodRead, I've never even heard of it but thanks, I will look into it :)

And yes, Gilmore Girls is one of the best things on TV, ever! :smile2:

The ominous TBR list! I

'm guessing that I have actually got, as in possess, about 12 books that are on my TBR list! The actual total of my TBR list is probably somewhere close to 100. As a school teacher I am currently on summer holidays so finding more time to read. However, as quick as I read one I seem to add a couple more to the list!

I went a bit crazy on BookMooch, and coupled with an inability to walk past a second hand bookstore without having a browse, my pile of book to be read has become a mountain in the last two months.

88 to be read, plus 56 in my housemates collection that I want to read too. So a total of 144 books, (or 147 if you count the 3 I'm halfway through.

I thought I had a problem, but looking through this thread, it seems kinda standard.
