"About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-- and I didn't know how dominant that part might be-- that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."

TWILIGHT has been a success of gargantuan proportions here in the US market. I 'm not a vampire fan usually but, as a YA author, I couldn't ignore the sales of this book and finally sat down to see why it's been so popular.

The story is great.

It's the kind of story you can't wait to get back home to read at the end of every day. At the core it's about a relationship, human and non human, that reaches deep with devotion and committment and unreachable elements that will make you sigh.

I'd recommend the book, but with this warning: it is heavy on the adverbs. As you can see from the little blurb above " absolutely", "unconditionally" and "irrevocably"...I about went nuts with the adverbs.

I was never able to ignore them, because they dot the manuscript like periods at the end of a sentance. But I did read on in spite of them, which says a LOT for the story.

My rating: 7 1/2 out of 10

I've just started reading the series, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I have to say, I like the banter between Edward and Bella more than anything else - gotta love a sarcastic vampire!

I WANT to read this book badly as I have heard it's really good. The only problem is, my hold position is 48  It's not fair! Why do so much people have to be in between this wonderful book and I?!

You can get it very cheaply online, EshInoBi - I found a copy for £3.75 on Green Metropolis. So, if you feel you absoluteoy can't wait for it from the library, you can always have a quick peek at availability 2nd hand on the internet.

I'm about half-way through this now. Not as great as people are making out, but good.

I agree - to be honest, I felt like I'd read it all before in other vampire books. It read too much like wish-fulfillment on the part of the author, as if Bella was a Mary-Sue. I got about a third of the way through the second book and gave up.

I just didn't get why:
Edward loved Bella so much. I could just about get why she fell for him - he was a vampire, glamorous, good-looking, everything a teenage reader would want in a boyfriend - but why on Earth would 'an older man' fall for a seventeen/eighteen year old girl? What would she have to offer him? Her unique 'smell'? That made Edward seem superficial and certainly didn't endear him to me. If they spent some time together it might seem just about believable but Edward seemed to fall for her straight away and I thought, "Oh here we go...wish fulfillment..."

I much prefer Freda Warrington's vampire novels. Don't get me wrong, Twilight was good, but not as great as people make out.

I'm going to wait for it-That's what the library is for [lol] and even if a book was for $3, my mom still won't buy me it, but I'm looking forward to reading this!

About three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his secret identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.

What Bella doesn't realize is that the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And it might be to late to turn back . . .

Deeply seductive and irresistibly compelling, Twilight is an extraordinary love story that will stay with you long after you have turned the page.

I'd give the book a 9/10, certainly an excellent book that had me turning each page with more anticipation than the next.

Note to the Mods: I wasn't sure were to put this thread, feel free to move if necessary.

I read Twilight a few weeks ago and although it was good, I agree with the others and found it wasn't as great as people make out. I found it quite drawn out and I found the dialogue between Edward and Bella a bit dull.

I loved book one. What the author did particularly well was rack up the erotic (if that is the right word) tension between Bella and Edward without ever going below the neck. A lot of romance writers could learn a great deal from Stephenie Myer on that front. IMO it particularly hit the spot with reference to that swimmy, angsty, adolescent feeling of first love. I won't say it was a perfect novel but it's very rare these days for me to actually read while I'm stirring saucepans and supposed to be cooking - and Twilight did that for me.
I wasn't quite a struck on New Moon, but it's still a page turner. I've yet to read Eclipse, but a reading buddy seems to think that characters 'chuckle' rather too much in it. Same reading buddy has raved over The Host, so I am definitely heading to buy that one!

I've really been in two minds as to whether I want to read these books. I've heard such mixed reviews. I'll probably try Twilight eventually.

I've now read the second book. The story structure felt pretty much identical. I felt like I was reading the same book. But not bad. I'm in no hurry to read the third one; I'll read it when I get around to it.

I've just read the third book; now I wait for the forth. Edward is gorgeous and his sarcastic and hilarious way of acting is awesome. I also like Bella with her kinda funny and awkward way to act and Jacob is a nice and... interesting guy.

I have to admit that the only reason I read the Twilight series was because Robert Pattinson has the role of Edward Cullen and he is absolutely gorgeous .
But once I started reading them I was hooked and read all three books in about 4 days and I am desperate for 2nd of August to come for the next book.
I do hope that S.M gets rid of that awful Jacob Black cos he just ruins the book for me personally.

I was really disappointed at first, cuz Robert didn't fit in my opinion for the part of Edward, who is... yeah, kinda the leading chara in the books. But after me seeing the trailer I agreed, cuz in the trailer he looked really Edwardlike.

I can't wait to see the film, I've read the first 2 books and keep looking for the third (not seen it yet and I don't want to order it because I'll probably end up spending more money if I start ordering...).

I thought they casting looked really good, except Carlisle. He doesn't look anything like I imagined him to look. I think they got most of the others fairly close though.

I've just started Twilight and I'm so glad I did! I think it is written in a way that young adults and adults can relate to Bella's experiences. Especially loving the descriptions of Edward's piercing and smoldering gazes.

Guess which arrived first :irked: Yep, the last one . Ah well, it will keep her happy and she will have finished it well before I get to it. Oh, we got The Host as well, as she wanted to give that one a try too. Will let you know what I think once I read them...

One thing Twilight has done - on the heels of Harry Potter - was paved the way for YA lit into mainstream...there is a lot of great YA out there to discover!

I thought this book was okay. Just okay though, for an easy read which gave me a break from hardcore lit. What I liked about the story was the sentence flow. As well, I was interested in what the story would bring. Like you, I loved the blurb in the back of the cover. However, I have to agree that there's more hype than there should be. Twilight wasn't mind-blowing like Harry Potter (with which it should not be compared!) but it was fun to read. Honestly, the characters were a bit flat; we have no clue what Bella did before Forks and we don't know what Edward did before meeting Bella. We know that Bella is clumsy but it doesn't show anywhere. The plot was fairly good, as it keep me reading for days. I admit, it's not bad. But it could have been better. I'm just a tad disappointed. It's probably because everyone talks about it as if it's the next Harry Potter.

I read this on recommendation of someone else last year. While I enjoyed the book, I was not blown away by it by any means, but it does have a slight addictive quality to it. I left it feeling I wouldn't bother me not to read the follow up, but I have been drawn to start reading them.

I do believe that the writer captures teenage love & desire whilst keeping an innocent tone to the whole book.

That is so true, I bought the first two books and read them in a couple of days then had to go out and buy the third book (well my boyfriend bought it me as I was skint ) as soon as I'd finished them. Having to wait til Breaking Dawn came out almost killed me .

I loved the Twilight series. I read all four in one week. I just couldn't put them down. It was like I was addicted. There were some frustrating bits in the middle two books, but the first and the last were awesome. I can hardly wait for the movie to come out. I also heard that there is going to be another book added to the series called Midnight Sun, it's supposed to be Edward's perspective on Twilight. It's not certain when it's gonna come out though . It was put on hold for a while.

I finally gave in and read Twilight last week. I finished it in less than 2 days, so I definitely agree that it's addictive and a real page-turner. It's not as well written as Harry Potter though and the way people were talking about it made it sound like it is the next Harry Potter.

I am in love with Edward Cullen, even if I do find Bella & Edward's age difference a bit odd haha.

I just finished Twilight, and will start on New Moon tonight. I'm not reading the book because of the film that just came out (it's just the timing that makes it look like it - I haven't even seen the movie), but because I did start reading it at one time awhile ago, but due to some dumb actions on my part, my mother decided to donate the books before I finished the first book. It was only recently that I got her to get me the books again, and this time I'm not letting her donate the books!

Anyway, I intially didn't want to read the books, since I'd heard they weren't that great, but I let my curiousity get the best of me and decided to read the books. I'm glad I started reading the first one. I really enjoyed it and I can see why so many people like it. I couldn't put the book down! My favorite characters are the Cullen family. They all just seem pretty cool.
