anyone else use this (http://www.librarything.com)?

it's quite good fun to catalogue your books (you can list up to 200 as a free member) and also to see who else has similar books to you

there's lots more to it such as 'clouds' and recommendations, plus you can read discussions or comments on the books, rate them yourself, etc etc

it's a pretty comprehensive site

Thanks for the link V, its great, I will most certainly be using it!

i'm turningpages on there

all i've listed so far are my five favourites (as listed on here) and also the books i'm reading this year.

funny thing is, i don't even have all those books any longer :)

Janet

It looks really good, but... I must be a bit stupid because although it says I've added a book, if I go to the libarary bit, there is nothing there!

Purple Poppy
23rd January 2007, 13:24
Someone mentioned it a few weeks ago and I have been cataloguing books ever since, so far about 50. It doesn't always recognise them, so it takes longer doing it manually. It's good to have an instant visual record, and I like reading the reviews and comments from others. I enjoy it.

23rd January 2007, 14:24
Lol, I think we'd all end up paying for membership knowing what people are liek on here. 200 wouldn't cover it.

I think it's called Watching on there... Strange. You go into the Search tab at the top of the page, then enter the name you want in the Search User box. Then their profile should come up, and on the right hand side, you can click Add to Your Watch List. Which I've just done with you :D

I think that's how it works, but if there's anything I haven't seen, let me know!

I use someting similar, I had more than the 200 books allowed for free membership and so I found -

Listal - List the stuff you love! Movies, TV, music, games and books (http://www.listal.com/)

It is much like Librarything but is new, still in developement and is completely free. Tom, the developer, is very good & open to suggestions.

Janet
23rd January 2007, 21:48
Will look into that one too, Nicky. Thanks.

Library Thing has gone down. Do you think it's our fault for all rushing over in one day?!

Purple Poppy
23rd January 2007, 22:44
Is it down again? It went down for about ten or fifteen minutes earlier on tonight. They've had trouble with spammers, but I remember the first time I went on at the beginning of Jan it went down for five minutes too.

I've added you. Listal says it's sent you a request, so I don't know whether you have to accept me back (if you want to!) - I'm Bagpuss on there too.

I'm a paid-up member on Library Thing with way more than 200 books and I think it is great! Even if, for security reasons, I am there under a different name which I close hold. People there can see my name there, which is sufficient for all purposes there.

Purple Poppy
24th January 2007, 23:10
It occured to me today, that having all the books catalogued on a site like Librarything, is good for insurance purposes. People who don't read are frequently taken aback by the numbers of books I have (or have had in the past). At least this way you have some proof.
(Although, of course, someone could enter books they don't own...but why bother!)

Thanks for the link to LibraryThing - am currently adding my books to it. Do you get extra features if you pay?

Polka Dot Rock
1st February 2007, 12:07
I think you get an unlimited amount of books that you can add, whereas you can 'only' add 200 on the free account.
I'm not sure what else you may get, tho.

Purple Poppy
1st February 2007, 13:16
I've decided to pay a lifetime fee as I have so many books to add. Not sure what the other benefits are though. I am looking at it from the point of view of insurance, if nothing else. You can also get a download of your library contents onto your mobile if you are book shopping and have forgotten what you've got, (available to everyone I think) Might be better having a separate wish list feature for that though.
Anyway, better start cataloguing.

Would love to see some sort of wish list feature though.

Have got round this by tagging books as read, TBR or wishlist - that way you can create separate lists by clicking on the different tag options.

JudyB

Ah...I see. Thanks Judy . Can I add you to my watching list?

Yes, thank you - haven't picked up on the 'watching' element yet though.

I had sent a message to the site improvements thread on Library Thing suggesting a wish list section and it turns out they are working on one. Having since however worked out a solution I'm happy with that. I've worked out that if I tag my wishlist books and then click on wishlist it isolates them onto one page - had a thought then that I could print it and use it as a book shopping list. Oh my geeky side is starting to expose its self!!!

Purple Poppy
2nd February 2007, 20:41
No. its a really good idea. Thank you for sharing it with us. I would have thought a wish list was more relevant to send to your mobile, if you're stuck infront of a shelf in the bookshop, wondering whats on your list! I will put some of mine down, tag them as you suggest and see what happens.:) Thanks Judy.

I am the same. I'm amazed at the number of books I haven't read yet, and want to re-read some that I read as a child.I'm going to adopt Judy's method of tagging my TBRs and I think that will push the number on Mount TBR into the clouds!
I will add you to my watch list and leave you a message when I go on later Mrstrecool.

1) Broken Skin by Stuart MacBride (but it's brand new, so not surprising)
2) The Crystal Chalice by Debora Hill & Sandra Brandenburg
3) Daughters of the Doge by Edward Charles (another brand new one)
4) Karma by Holly A Harvey (although I borrowed this from PP)
5) An Open Vein by J M Warwick
6) The Spur on the Plate by Maureen Rylance

Lifetime membership is only $25, so I think that's maybe about £12/£13. $10 for a year's membership works out at about £5/£6 roughly (I think). I'll probably be paying up for lifetime membership at the end of this month, or perhaps next - I'm getting closer and closer to the 200 limit for a free membership!

It's very addictive isn't it! I enjoyed being able to put childhood books on that I don't have any more - cheating but gratifying as it's become my virtual bookcase. Also as a lot of the books I read are from the library it's nice again to add them to my 'virtual bookcase'. I've tagged all the books I've read this year '2007' so that I can eventually draw up a list that will show what I've read this year - the possibilities with LibraryThing are endless . . .

Yes - all LT members can sign up for it, but at present, books will only be assigned to US members. There's hope that they'll be able to extend the same offer to other, non-US members, at some point in the future.

So, of course, I've signed up in preparation!

I find it very addictive!!!

I did find it very useful to print a copy of my "to buy" list when i was going to my book shop on Wednesday.

It's also nice to have a record of what books i own and what books i have read!

There's a group called Early reviewers that seems to be where you sign up.

Michelle

Thanks Louise - I did actually find it in their blog. As with most things, I can't see it coming outside the US for a while, so I think I'll wait until I have my new address to sign up - will be one less place to contact about a change of address!!

I will sign up to this reviewing thing if others have - thank :smile2:you

What I like most about it, is finding there are actually other people out there who like and own the same books as me :D Gives you ideas of other books to try, as well.

Yes it appeals to my geeky side as well. Also I get a thrill (easily pleased ) seeing all the book covers on one page. I have sent messages to people who read the lesser read writers that I like to find out their views - so that's been good too.

Unfortunately, like Michelle I have got behind. I was listing everything very methodically, and adding new books as soon as I got them, and then I went through a very tired patch, and didn't. Consequently, I will have to spend time checking what's on and what isn't. Bit of a bind, but I still think it's a good thing.

JudyB

I've kept up to date with adding 'currently reading' books, reviews etc but I've got behind on adding the contents of my bookcase and no longer know where I'm up to and think that I've moved books around which will make it harder!

Still love it though!:D

I have completely forgotten. I have been so busy with getting the house sorted out (it is a mess), and of course seeing to Katie every five minutes means not much gets done. Maybe next century when the house is junk free and completely redecorated, fixed up and furnished and the children grow up I might get chance to sit down. Failing that I might find a free afternoon nearer to the present when I won't feel guilty about the mountain of work that needs doing here.

I've been keeping mine up-to-date with all new purchases, but I haven't made much more progress in adding the rest of my books (mostly my books on the occult/supernatural so I'm not in too much hurry to add them - so long as I've got my 'novels' on there, I'm happy).

Paul
16th July 2007, 00:41
Yes, my books go in pretty much as soon as I get them home. But if not, then I am always looking at the site, almost daily, to read the reviews of books that I have, so there is always ready opportunity to stay current. I love the reviews feature more than anything.

Echo
16th July 2007, 09:57
I don't want to pay for an extended account, so I maxed the free one up to 201 books, so I wasn't able to put in all of them. But, at least it's a sampling. I'm trying to catalog all of my books in an Excel spreadsheet (I'm sorry if I've mentioned this before), and I'm actually up to about 250 books, but I haven't physically gone through all of them...I don't feel like digging through all of my boxes and closets. :tong:

I've just been having a look at the Library Thing website. Do you guys enter the exact edition that you own, or just go with the title?

Kell
16th July 2007, 17:09
I add my books by the ISBN number. If it doesn't come up, I then do it by title, but amend the details so it reflects my own copy as much as possible.

happyanddandy
16th July 2007, 18:18
I've just been having a look at the Library Thing website. Do you guys enter the exact edition that you own, or just go with the title?

I use author or title and then look for my edition - if not there then I choose similar - I have managed to upload a picture of a text book once!!

Louiseog
16th July 2007, 18:37
I do that and then find my cover (or one I like)

Paul
16th July 2007, 23:09
ISBN against amazon does well enough for me. For older books I'll search further for cover or edition and look in Library of Congress. But for something that works so easily and allows me to tag books as I wish, I'm not inclined to be too finicky. I don't have rarities that need precise imprint information, nor am I selling to a market place, so I'm very happy.

Echo
17th July 2007, 02:14
I do a title search through amazon, but I always edit the titles once I have them on my list so that the edition information doesn't appear. I then go through the publication dates and change them to the original dates.

Yes - use tags and you can use more than one tag for a book eg, if you have a library book that you read in 2007 - you can tag it 'Read 2007, library loan' ie put a comma between tags and it will appear in both categories :smile2:

I bet you all knew this already but I'm sharing anyway as it makes it more fun!!

I thought it was just me!! I could get into my favourites by dragging and dropping it, but to get it onto my toolbar it was more difficult.

Johnny right clicked on an existing link I had on the toolbar and selected properties. Then he right clicked on the librarything link and selected properties. On the 'general' tab for both you have the address (URL). He swapped the librarything link address for the other one and it worked easy peesy!! ...He also changed the name of the link to read Add to Librarything to stop confusion...

I hope this helps! It was quite straight forward really, just not sure I explained it well!! Let me know how you get on.

Of to read Russell now.. see you guys tomorrow xx

Thanks Princess - I seem to have managed to do it a different way - I added it to favourites by right clicking, then found a book on Amazon and while on that page I clicked the link in favourites - does that make sense? It seems to have worked as the book has come up in the 'add books' section.

I'm being sent the same one as you, Judy. :)

This is interesting, a thread discussing how people are chosen (http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.php?topic=30261).
Factors that suggest someone likely to review a book, and talk about it widely, on LibraryThing and elsewhere.
So, being a member on here, and especially someone who writes reviews, may help a little. :)

They have just added Librarything local which lists bookshops, veues and what's on in your area - very useful :smile2:

Oh that's what it is! I clicked on mine and it didn't do anything.

Hmm... I wonder why? Did you try the tab next/near to Zietgeist?

I've tried it again in profile and it worked this time thanks. It's a nice idea.

Very cool! I didn't think it would show much for me, but there are plenty of bookshops listed, including some I've never heard of.

I've snagged another Early Reviewer book - it's called 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' by Rebecca Miller

Looks interesting :smile2:

Aww, I didn't get one this time.. and I'm still waiting for Feb's book!

I don't have my Feb one yet either. Looking in the Early Reviewers talk it seems you can wait quite a while. Some people get very upset if they don't get a book!

I'm reading my Feb book at the mo - it's slow progress - been busy with work etc but I will have some time on my own later in the week and hope to make progress - especially with another book on the way.
