The Hogfather - Terry Pratchett
It's the night before Hogswatch. And it's too quiet.

There's snow, there're robins, there're trees covered with decorations, but there's a notable lack of the big fat man who delivers the toys...

He's gone.

Susan the governess has got to find him before morning, otherwise the sun won't rise. And unfortunately her only helpers are a raven with an eyeball fixation, the Death of Rats and an oh god of hangovers.

Worse still, someone is coming down the chimney. This time he's carrying a sack instead of a scythe, but there's something regrettably familiar...

HO. HO. HO.

It's true what they say.

'You'd better watch out...'

The Christmas Mystery - Jostein Gaarder
When Joachim opens the first window on his advent calendar, his excitement mounts as the countdown to Christmas Day begins. But soon he notices that strange things are happening behind the little windows, and everyday something mysterious and new appears. Meanwhile Elisabeth and the angel Ephiriel are on their own very special journey, and it is only when the last window on Joachim's calendar is opened that the true magic and wonder of Christmas is revealed.

About the Author - John Colapinto
One of the hottest books of 2001- A thriller of plagarism and murder as well as a wickedly funny satire on New York literary world. Cal Cunningham dreams of writing an autobiographical novel that will help him escape from his life as a penniless bookstore stockboy in upper Manhattan. Yet, after two years of living together, it is Stewart, Cal's studious flatmate who has finished writing a page-turning novel - based on Cal's life. When a timely, fatal bicycle accident removes Stewart from the scene, Cal appropriates the manuscript as his own and places it in the hands of the legendarily ferocious literary agent Blackie Yeager. Soon Cal realises his most outlandish fantasies of literary success. That is, until he discovers that someone knows his secret. For Cal, this means plotting not just his second novel, but also his first murder.

I voted for 'The Christmas Mystery' and even if it does not end up as one of the choices, I am still going to buy it because it sounds fab.

It does indeed. I voted for the Colapinto one, simply because I have it & haven't yet read it. I have Hogfather & have read it many times. I wouldn't mind re-reading it though,as I love it so much! So, whatever the final decision, I think we'll have an excellent read!

I think so, I haven't read 'Hogfather', so whatever is decided, I will happily read.

Its really weird actually, I was reading the nominations the other day and I went to make a cup of tea and I found my husband's copy of 'Hogfather' lying in the hallway!

I voted for The Christmas Mystery - seeing as I nominated it!

I take it The Hogfather is a 'stand-alone' Pratchett?

I take it The Hogfather is a 'stand-alone' Pratchett? Pretty much, yes. It features Susan Sto Helit (Death's grand daughter) but it doesn't really require former knowledge, as we get reminded that's who she is.

I'm voting The Christmas Mystery because I can get it from my library. I can also get The Hogfather locally though and that sounds good too.

I have voted for the Hogfather.

I have not read any Terry Pratchett books and had intended starting with The Colour of Magic but if The Hogfather can be read without needing know about all those other books I am happy to start with it.

The other books sound interesting too however.

I know I'm sheltered but haven't read a Terry Pratchett yet - I love mysteries and should get out more.

I wonder if my Dad has this one? He has huge stacks of Pratchett . . .

I think I'll close this now, so those joining in can get hold of their copies. :) I belive Amazon.co.uk have it for £3.99, and I found it in a book shop for £3.99 as well.

Don't forget that books that weren't chosen for the vote, or didn't win the vote, can be nominated again.
