This thread is inspired by Freewheeling Andy's trip to Gordon Ramsey's and the £80 meal.

I was wondering... how much would you be willing to pay for a wonderful meal? What is the limit?

The limit is my bank balance and my mood. Given the right circumstances I'd pay anything.

I'm not sure I'd go over the £100 mark. I don't know, it would have to be pretty spectacular to warrant that. Even then, I'm not sure I could justify spending any more.

It would depend on the occasion, really, but like Sarah, I don't think I'd go over £100. In fact, that would be for TWO of us - LOL!

The most I have ever paid for dinner was at TGI Friday's... I know, classy! But i LURVE baby back ribs with the special JD sauce! I think it came to about £70 for two people. Not really that expensive when you consider it's about £35 for 2 people for a 3 course meal and cocktails. Still, on my wages it's a lot of money and certainly not something I can afford to do often.

We sometimes vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine and usually dine several times at this restaurant. The food is excellent. Check the menu, prices are in U.S. $$$ of course.

I'm lucky if I get to go out for a meal costing £20 each.. these high prices are just not something I could afford.

I'm assuming we're talking IFFFFFFFF we had the money and knew the restaurant was excellent and were celebrating a one-time occasion...shudder to think anyone would assume I'd go out and blow 250.oo on something that's just going to add to my waist line!

Time changes many things. When we (wife and I) were your age we found it a treat to eat at a hamburger joint, used to get 5 burgers for a dollar. However, at this stage in our life we are able to "splurge" once in a while and enjoy the spoils of a life of hard work, especially when on vacation.

See, I can make a serious post once in a while.

Yea, I do understand that.. we ate out more before we had the kids (even though I still wouldn't have paid £80!).

But think about when you will be 60. Both kids will be independent, no new house/mortgage/other loan/furniture/whatever to buy/pay. THen you will be going out and spending tons on small amounts of food.:D
I can't wait  (for the middle bit, that is!)

The most I have ever paid is about $275 for two, but that was a special occasion and not something I would normally do. It is easy to spend that kind of money in San Francisco for dinner. We average about $50 dollars for two at the places we go to. See below Chez Pannise restaurant. Chef Alice Waters (Been there a few times) http://www.chezpanisse.com/pgdownmenu.html

We wouldn't pay more than $50 for a nice dinner for two.

The most I have paid was ninety Euros at a French restaurant in Ireland, which was well worth it.

Me and OH dont really look at prices when we are having a meal, we just order what we want, drink what we want and as long as we have a good time it doesnt really matter, I think the most we have paid so far is £160 between 2 of us. It was worth it and we did get a couple bottles of wine :)

No limit. That being said, the price isn't always a direct indication of the quality. I've had excellent dining experiences in small locals-only restaurants for very little money.

I would not be willing to pay beyond £50 .00 per person.
