Ooh, I've just been lent the Kite Runner by someone at work. What was it that you loved about it?
KW
22nd September 2006, 21:30
Drama. Exotic locale. Intense situations. Deeply woven characters. And all of this simply builds and builds in this war torn part of the world in such a way that your eyes are opened and you are unable to stop visualizing and thinking about these characters and their lives.
I was so relieved to find out that they are going to make a movie out of it. I can't wait to see it!
Hope you enjoy it. Tell me your feelings on it when you're finished.

Actually, I'm kind of skimming through the first chap here...and surprised to be doing so.

They are?! That's excellent news (providing they don't ruin it!) - it's one of my favourite books so far this year.

Now I'm reading Wild Roses...trying NOT to yawn through this one...sheesh, my luck these days...
Michelle
4th October 2006, 06:35
Hmm.. you're not doing very well with the books you pick up at the moment, are you? What are you looking for at the moment.. exciting plot, deep characters, great location...?
KW
5th October 2006, 14:47
All of the above?????? LOL. I dunno. It's driving me crazy. Writing has made me this monster with a lense so tight, if I don't like what I focus on, I'm searching the horizon for another piece.

I've done some MAJOR skimming thru Wild Roses -- an awful lot of nothing IMO -- and am gleaning a wee bit of enjoyment for the purchase.
Can't wait until The Emporer's Children arrives. That, will hopefully save me from this reading slump!

Thanks, Louise. I've always loved that name for some reason. Think I'll make a character in my next book with that name...

Really confused do you like Louise or which book?

I would imagine KW is saying she likes the name 'Louise'. :)

I thought so although there is nothing wrong with which book!
KW
9th October 2006, 18:06
DUH. I like which book --- jk --- BTW, am reading, "An Abundance of KAtherine's" now, because my name is Katherine....actually really enjoying it. Great stuff.
KW
13th October 2006, 14:29
I'm still reading "An Abundance of Katherine's" but just started "The Emporer's Children"...gonna search this site to see if anyone else is/has reading/read it.

Finished AOK -- and really enjoyed it. Now I'm reading Falling Star by Karen Weisner -- highly recommended by a reader that liked one of MY books.

I bagged the Emporers Children after countless attempts and am now reading Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase which came highly recommended on another forum.
We'll see.
KW
19th January 2007, 22:26
I bagged the Lord of Scoundrels and am now reading The RAven Prince which is OK... not written terribly beautifully or engagingly but...and I seriously doubt I'll stay with it. I can already tell.

The Kite Runner is such a good book, sad, hard-hitting, but full of warmth at the same time, I really enjoyed it.
KW
21st January 2007, 17:33
Yes, it remains one of my fav reads of last year.
KW
23rd January 2007, 03:23
Well, I SKIMMED through the end of the RAven Prince just so I could say I'd finished the danged thing but it was LAME. L - A - M - E.
I'm onto Glory in Death, the second in the IN DEATH series and so far it's at least holding my interest which is getting harder and harder to please with each passing day it seems!
KW
Michelle
23rd January 2007, 07:21
I take it you read the first one?
(I always have to laugh at the perfect love life those two have! lol)
KW
24th January 2007, 17:30
Yes, I read the first one. I'd heard SOOOOOO much about Roark and how AMAzing he is, I was disappointed at how his character didn't grab me. Nor does Eve's. She's too rough for my liking. And he's mostly talk, throwing around his maleness just for effect... I should say Nora throws around his maleness just for effect, without much to substantiate it.
I simply don't enjoy a novel where two people get it on for the formulaic sake of it.
KW

24th January 2007, 19:04
My favourite has always been Peabody, and I love the relationship between her and Eve.
KW
24th January 2007, 19:42
Is he in book 2?????????
Michelle
24th January 2007, 19:48
He?! Peabody is a woman! Hmm.. thinking back, she may not have been in book 1.

Just finished Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews. I read it in two days. Not necessarily because it was wonderfully well written, tho it was better crafted than I had anticipated. The bizarre nature of the story, though somewhat predictable, kept me going.
Much better than the cheesy flick.
Michelle
29th January 2007, 20:00
It's certainly more in depth than the film, isn't it? Do you think you'll read the rest in the series?
KW
30th January 2007, 06:21
I'm going to try...:smile2:

I just finished Equus the play by Peter Shaffer. I read it because the blurbs I'd read around sounded interesting and because I want to study plays to perhaps do an adaptation of AOV.
I read it in one sitting, as if watching the play and it took about 2 hours. The story was gripping, intense and exceedingly well written with interesting characters, plot twists and some wonderful conclusions.

This book goes against many of the writing no-no's being taught by todays writing experts: don't use ly words, never use !'s and cut the melodrama.
Though I was intruiged by FITA, I could not keep hold of POTW for the way it is written. And many of the scenes contradicted eachother -- ie -- characters doing what they just said they would never do, etc.
To make a long story short, I was a third of the way into this book and figured it wasn't going to get any better and with an impending head cold that has now taken over my head, the combination of reading this and a nasty head cold caused me to toss it.
NEXT.
KW:irked:
The Dollmaker by Amanda Stevens....am halfway thru and WA-LA am STILL reading!!!
It's quite suspensful and takes place in one of my fav places: New Orleans.
KW
I'm reading the HUGE book, TWILIGHT...the number one YA book of the century thus far Amazon calls it..lol...it's good, but I think that's a bit overdone.
Done with TWILIGHT, on to NEW MOON.
Michelle
24th March 2007, 20:03
Did you give up on After You'd Gone then?
Nope, it's sitting by my bed. You know when you finish a book in a series you are likely to read book 2 next. That's where I'm at right now with TWILIGHT and NEW MOON.
KW
Michelle
24th March 2007, 20:56
Ohh.. ok. :)
Have I seen those 2 books on MySpace?
Hmmm, maybe -- for sure in YA sections.
After a valiant try into the sequel of the hugely popular TWILIGHt book: NEW MOON, I put it aside for good last night.
On to something else...
KW
Michelle

So you enjoyed book 1, but not the sequel? What's next?
Read most of Linda Lael Miller's HIGH COUNTRY BRIDE but in the end the melodrama made me unable to finish it.
Onto something else....
Just finished NOTES ON A SCANDAL and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a fascinating study in human perception.
Michelle
29th May 2007, 19:19
Phew.. someone else who liked it! :D
Reading LITTLE CHILDREN now...
LOVED LIttle Children. A fascinating peek at suburbia.
Reading a YA story: Boot Camp about a kid who gets sent to a "reform school" type place. So far, so good.
KW

I've read FIght CLub since I was last here and now am on to ECLIPSE, the long awaited third installment by Stephenie Meyer in her vampire series.
Michelle
19th August 2007, 10:54
I thought you didn't like vampire books, Katherine?
KW
4th September 2007, 20:11
I DON'T like vampire books as a rule, Michelle ~ which explains why I did NOT finish Eclipse...lol.
I adored Interview WIth A Vampire, though.
Now, I'm reading Time Traveler's Wife...I'm about through the first chapter and am liking it fairly well. Interesting concept.
Though another book came in the mail today and...yikes, it's grabbing me just with the cover!
KW

Couldn't finish TTW. Started Lisa Kleypas' MINE UNTIL MIDNIGHT and put that down. Now, I'm going back to an old fav: Midnight Bayou I need a book guaranteed to deliver!
Michelle
27th October 2007, 08:33
I put down TTW, then picked it back up, finished it, and loved it. Don't give up on it too quickly. :)
Did you read Midnight Bayou again?

I found a book I enjoyed: The Outcast by Sadie Jones. Finished that and read Water for Elephants. Enjoyed that as well.

Not read The Outcast but loved Water For Elephants, so I'll look out for it and add it to Mt TBR.
Am now reading ATONEMENT...I'm just sooooo happy to be ( it seems ) on a reading roll!

6th June 2008, 17:33
How coincidental, Atonement and Water For Elephants were the last two books I read for a Book Club I run!
I liked Water For Elephants, particularly the bits with the older Jacob - Atonement was good but not as likable, methinks.
Got through three chaps of Atonement and just couldnt go on...lol, sounds like I was trekking through the desert....FELT like it too.
Grrrrrrrrr. Onto searching again!
Michelle
18th June 2008, 20:29
I keep telling you, try Linda Gillard! :)
Wish you lived closer to TOSS me her books...lol...they'd sink if you did, don'tcha think luv?

You can have Emotional Geology once it's finished it's book ring here.. it's pretty light for postage.
I finished BURNT SIENNA - by an author whose name escapes me. It was OK. Mass market mystery stuff -- they all read the same to me.
I'm enjoying A LIfetime Burning, tho it still hops around too much for my liking, however, I see what the author is doing with the hopping. I'm where Rory and Flo are about 18 and things are heating up....
KW
2nd September 2008, 15:27

Now reading A Certain Slant of Light - so far so good.
KW
3rd October 2008, 19:39
Put down a Certain Slant and picked up The Darkest Night - which, after 2 chapters was so unrealistic ( okay, it's paranormal, but why would a woman GO AFTER a man who threatens to tear her apart??? Just because she's attracted to him unexplainably?!?!?!) No. Not working. Shades of an old movie with the weak female running through the forest and she TRIPS!!! Not happening for me.:irked:
Back to A Certain Slant....
Michelle
3rd October 2008, 19:44
Put down a Certain Slant and picked up The Darkest Night
This one (http://www.amazon.com/Darkest-Night-Lords-Underworld-Book/dp/0373772467)? That's not the sort of book I'd expect you to pick up!
What about The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas?
KW
3rd October 2008, 19:54
That's the one. Yeeks.
I'm going to give SLANT another chance, if it doesn't sink its teeth in, then its on to STRIPED PJs.
KW
6th October 2008, 16:13
I ADORED Stripes. Very engaging. HIghly recommend! The ending....WOW.
KW
9th October 2008, 14:52
Now reading Living Dead Girl...so far interesting.
KW
9th October 2008, 21:15
Couldn't finish LIVING DEAD GIRL by Elisabeth Scott. Too unrealistic that this abducted girl wouldn't do SOMETHING to try to get away from this creep. (I've read better abduction stories ) She was so "dead" she couldn't try to escape?? Come one. Annoyed, I put the book down. Maybe she did escape her abductor in the end, I didn't care enough about her to plod through the repetitive story to find out.
Michelle
9th October 2008, 21:16
You're such a harsh critic! ;)
KW
9th October 2008, 21:25
Gulp. Should I sugar coat it? No one does for me...:motz:
Michelle
10th October 2008, 06:09
No hon.. did you not see the wink? It just makes me laugh that you seem to struggle so much to find a book you enjoy.. and I would imagine that's partly down to you being a writer..?
KW
22nd October 2008, 16:38
Now reading THERAPY. Really intrigued so far.
KW
23rd October 2008, 19:47
Finished Therapy. WOW. Devoured that book. Really a page turner. Back to UGLIES now....
Michelle
23rd October 2008, 19:54
It certainly holds you, doesn't it!? I really want to read his other books.. it's a shame they're in German!
KW

I'm reading the Hunger Games. Liking it so far, though the 'voice' of the main character sounds too adult for my liking. It IS a YA book, after all.
