I am reading my first Martina Cole book at the moment called The Graft. I am finding it okay, but there seems to be alot of swearing and its really putting me off. Im not normally bothered by swearing but this seems so uncalled for. Are all her books like that, or is this a one off?

Lilywhite

The Graft wasn't her best work. There is sometimes swearing and violence but that comes with underground London crime novels. Her earlier works are much better, one of my favourites being The Ladykiller.

Thanks Lilywhite, I will give The Ladykiller a go. My boyfriends mum loves them, I think thats why I was more shocked with all the swearing!
She is so prim and proper.

The Ladykiller was my first Martina Cole novel...I loved it and have been hooked since. I've read nearly all of hers now, some are better than others but I've enjoyed them all the same.

I read one on holiday a couple of years back. It had a yellow cover. I thought it was ok, bit too gory for holiday reading. I knew I wouldn't reread it though, so I bookcrossing'ed it.

Have a copy of Two Women that my grandpa gave me some vouchers for (it was free with The Sun I think). It's on my TBR shelf, but one of the lower priority ones!

If you like The Graft, you will love her other stuff. I personally thought the Graft lacked what some of her other books had. Still a good story just not up to standards :)

Lilywhite

I didn't know about this offer but I have read Faceless before. I can't quite remember what it was about yet but I think it was one of her better books :)

You already have them all!!!

Now I remember this one, a great story if I remember rightly. Mind you, you can't go far wrong with Martina Cole if you like underground dark crime novels.

You guys have Woolworth's over there!? I wonder if it is the same one that used to be all over the place in the States? Here it was a sort of five and dime as we called it. Dry goods, a bit of everything. But no books that I remember...........and I'd remember! :)

Oh! Thanks for the link. The Woolworth's I remember was smaller scale than that, but it may have been the predesessor to it. They have all evolved more or less along the same track.
The products at for example Wal-Mart over here and K-Mart have substantially improved in the last 15 years or so.

Same difference I expect. :)

Just bought two of Martina's books today, one called The Runaway and the other is Maura's Game. The lady on the market stall told me to read The runaway first as Maura's game runs on from it, is this true?

Thanks!:)

Wal-mart bought out our Asda last year, so I think we are merging more and more! (www.asda.com)

I think once I finish my Evanovich kick, I might have to rad that copy of Two Women that I got free in Woolies a couple of years ago!

I carnt wait for her new book, just a shame it's hardback. I find hardbacks harder to read plus there more expensive. I have not read any reviews on it yet though.
I have just started reading The Jump today and its looking pretty good! :o

Lilywhite

Just browsing (honest) in Waterstones today and noticed Ms Cole has a new book out!

It's called The Business and in true Martina Cole style, it looks great.

Imelda Dooley is scared. Really scared. She's played hard and fast and now she's been caught. She's pregnant and now she's on her own. Her father, not a man to mess with, will see that somebody pays for this. And it's not going to be her. So Imelda Dooley tells a lie. A lie that literally causes murders. When Mary Dooley's husband is killed in the night's events, she knows she must graft to keep the family afloat. And graft she does, becoming a name in her own right. But she still has to watch her daughter's life spiral into a vicious, hate-fuelled cycle of drugs and prostitution. Caught up in the carnage that is Imelda's existence are Mary's adored grandchildren, Jordanna and Kenny. Pretty little Jordanna isn't yet three and she already knows far too much. All she can do is look after her baby brother, Kenny, and try not to draw unwanted attention to herself. Set in the East End of London from the tail-end of the seventies up until the present-day, THE BUSINESS is a tale of drugs, prostitution and a young girl's fight for survival -- against all the odds.
