Christopher Paolini - Eragon

One boy...
One dragon...
A world of adventure.

When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Over night his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king who's evil knows no bounds.

Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands...

Jane Gardem - The Queen of the Tambourine

Eliza Peabody is one of those dangerously blameless women who believes she has God in her pocket. She is too enthusiastic; she talks too much. Her concern for the welfare of her wealthySouth London neighbours extends to ingenuous well-meaning notes of unsolicited adviceunder the door. It is just such a one-sided correspondence that heralds Eliza's undoing. Did her letter have something to do with the woman's abrupt disappearance ? Why will no-one else speak of her? And why the watchful, pitying looks and embarassment that now greet her?

José Saramoga - Blindness

Suddenly, while stopped at a red light in his car, a man goes blind. A "white evil" obliterates his vision plunging him into light as fathomless and impenetrable as the darkest night. A crowd gathers and one man is kind enough to see him home. It is not long, however, before an epidemic of the new blindness causes the government to act in the most authoritarian and fearful of ways, throwing many of the recently disabled into a mental asylum, guarded by scared, trigger-happy soldiers, left to fend for themselves

I really like the look of it, Wabbit - I just already have Eragon, so I voted for that one. I may well get hold of Blindness too at some point though, And you can always renominate it for another reading circle. :)

Actually, I really like the sound of all three nominations this time round - I think we've picked some good 'uns!

Well, that's it - voting is over & the results are in. Actually, the results were so close this time round that we've been thinking two reading circles might be in order for September! With 7 votes for Eragon and 6 for The Queen of Tambourine, the Mod Squad agreed that it looks like there are plenty of folks interested this time round to warrant it.

As it is, I have both the books sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read, so I'll be taking part in both reads.

So, off you all go - grab a copy of either Eragon or The Queen of Tambourine (or both if you fancy it!) - you can start early if you like, as I'm off to start up the threads in a moment - and we can start discussions on the September choices.

Happy reading!
