Carried on from Wolf Brother.
Spirit Walker by Michelle Paver
Torak is an unusual boy. He can talk to wolves, especially his long-lost friend Wolf, and must vanquish the Soul-Eaters...
Set in the Bronze Age time, Torak belongs to Raven Clan, one of the many clans named after animals. Torak is just a beginner. His mother was a Seal member, while his father was a Deer member.
Torak misses his long-lost friend Wolf. Long gone are those days hunting with him, seeing who could howl the loudest... No-one knows where he's gone to.
When Torak's camp are hit by the "Forest Illness", they have to leave before other members of the clan catch it.
Torak's quest is to find a cure and the cause sends him all the way to Seal Island, where the clan Seal can be found. But when he gets there, there's blood in the water, not done by any of the clans. A large baleen whale doesn't seem the animal to do such a thing. Then he has a dream about the thing that is killing the real seals: he sees them as evil, and dreams that he meets Wolf again, and the monster is described as: "...tall black fin. He saw the silver wave curling back. He saw the great blunt head racing towards him in the green water." The answer is a seal-eating mammal, an unseen menace that will change his life forever.
The creature, at the time, was a newly evolved species, from an otter-like mammal to this forever-swimming animal. What could this creature be?
Spirit Walker is a spellbinding tale about friendship, treachery and self-sacrifice.
A reccommended read for all.
"The story grips you like a wolf's jaws and won't let go... superb." The Times
