View Full Version : July's book

July is 'birthday month' for our forum, as we celebrate out first year. Because of that, I decided to choose some 'classics' for the Reading Circle. You know, some of the books that you keep meaning to read, but never get around to... :D
The other bonus to these books is that they should be pretty easy to get hold of.
So, choose the one that you's most likely to read, cast your vote, and then join us as we read and discuss during the birthday celebrations.

Well, since reading The Jane Austi#en Book Club a while back, i've been meaning to read one of Austen's novels, so I've voted for Emma in the hopes that it gives me the perfect excuse!

I've read Wuthering Heights many times, it's a fave of mine. I didn't fancy David Copperfield or Treasure Island or Dracula :) Emma for me too.

I've voted for Treasure Island, purely because I have never read it all the way through. It was on my 'to read' list as I felt that I might manage to read it all now that I'm 'growed up!
But secretly I hope that Emma wins!

Dracula's an old fave of mine, but I've just sent my cpy off as a swap very recently. I almost voted fro Wuthering Heights as i've always meant to read that one - the story is so haunting (LOL!), bt in the end, i had to go for Emma.
And I had to read Treasure Island as research for a production of it at college. I never finished it - couldn't get into it at all - so I really didn't fancy that one.

Let us know what you think of it Wabbit. Looks good. We are going to that area in Sept and could include it in our itinery (sp?)

Mmmmm I don't know on this one. I would like to read Dracula as I have never picked that one up before, although I haven't read any of the other books, I have read othr books by the same authors.
Will vote Bram Stoker but don't really mind either way :)

I've voted for Emma, although I have most of these. I don't fancy David Copperfield or Treasure Island though :D

I voted for David Copperfield as I've got a copy and have been meaning to read it. It was Dickens's favourite of his own novels and is supposed to be among his best work.

Ah yes, my revered employer! There is a big Jane Auten celebration happening this year - some anniversary I think. We are also doing the "Huge Hants Read" focussing on Persuasion. If that was the reading circle choice, I would have voted for it as I need an excuse to reread it!
I think I will wait till the next reading circle to join in, as I have read most of these years ago, and feel no desire to reread any sadly.

I have read all of these (though some I read a long time ago!). I read Wuthering Heights for A level and hated it - every time a character died I gave a little cheer!

Just voted fro Treasure Island because I've never read it! But I shan't mind reading Emma again if that wins. I've read David Copperfield, and loved it. Dickens is the master at characterisation I think. DH read it too, and then we watched several versions of it on DVD. Interesting exercise becasue each version portrayed the characters differently, left out bits we thought were important etc.

Looks like we have a run away winner so far... does anyone else want to vote? I've ordered 'Emma' at the library, but I might check the bookshop tomorrow. :)

I voted for Emma, simply b/c I bought it around Easter, read just a tiny bit while I was over at Uncle J's house/the farm and haven't picked it up since. This is a great excuse to pick it up again! :)

Folks may be interested to know that you can download Emma (as well as many other classics) free from various places online as it's no longer in copyright (that's how I have my copy), so if you have trouble getting hold of it, you can try online...

Time to close this vote - it looks like we have a winner. :D
I've just picked my copy up from the library, but if you're looking to buy:
GreenMetropolis has copies - £3.75 + free delivery
Amazon - £1.99 + postage
Amazon Marketplace - £0.01 + £2.75 postage
RISI appears to have plenty of copies.
