Any other fans? I picked up Rapture in Death, as the theme of virtual reality appealed to me. I was, however, grabbed by the characters, went back to the first book, and have since read the rest of the series, almost one after the other!

They're a crime series, based on Eve Dallas, but a nice twist is that they're set a little in the future. The crime stories are good, the futuristic bits are interesting, but the best is the relationships with the characters.

Each book can be read in it's own right, but is much better as a series. If you're looking for something new, book one (Glory in Death) may well be worth a try.

Hey Michelle,

You're right about the Death books. Even though you can take each book as a separate entity, they are soooo cool as a series 8). I love the way some of the characters introduced in one book are then brought back later in the series. Especially those that become a network of Eve Dallas' friends [which totally confuses and befuddles the lead character].

They are all so human in these stories. You can imagine them...hear them. The back stories that are continue to develop. You want to get to know them all. And the language. Not just in story telling, but when the characters speak to each other. Love it when Peabody is being sarcastic, or the way Roarke reads people, the contrasting Dr Mira and the indescribable Mavis. I have never had a problem with remembering what is going on or who is doing what through the series.

About to read Survivour in Death [from library as bookstore is out] and have dibs on Origin in Death. Can't wait.

Hey Michelle,

What did you think of "Survivor in Death". Just finished it and I don't seem to have the same buzz. I think it could have been the decrease in character interaction or am I just expecting too much? :dunno:
Maybe I'm used to having several suspects in the radar, and this book wasn't structured that way. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I'm just not as stoked as usual.

Michelle

I agree with you.. and I've read reviews saying the same thing. I wasn't sure if it was just me though.. I read the rest almost one after the other, then I had a gap before Survivor, so I wasn't sure if that was to blame.

The good news is that I saw some reviews on Amazon that say that Origin is back to her usual standard! :)

Yipee :jump:
Maybe JD [Nora] was trying too hard and too fast to get Survivor out. Glad I'm not the only one aswell. Thought the IIH was affecting my sense of quality :sarcastic: .

Now I'm really glad I put my name down on the Library list when I did..... :psmile: soon it will be mine to read

Origin in Death
Finally found a copy, bought it, read it. :reading:
J D is back to her old zing. Bit tentitive with some of her characters interactions, but I felt such relief after the defeatist style she chose in Survivor. That book had me worried :worried:

Anyone else read it yet......Let me know what you think. :D

I put a request in with the library, but haven't heard anything. Thankfully I've loads to keep me occupied, but it is getting tempting!

I've read the first seven in the series, I stumbled across her as I'm a fan of her other books (Nora Roberts).

I really must get the rest of her books in to read as they are so good.

Michelle

You have so many good things to come! :D
The characters develop so well.. I'm a big fan of the relationship between Dallas and Peabody.

Finally - Origin In Death is available for me to pick up at the library! :D Hopefully I can get Labyrinth finished very soon, and go and pick it up.

I've read Origin In Death, and I'm feeling a bit mixed. The beginning didn't seem to good, but the story started developing quite nicely.

I know Dallas is still having nightmares, but she's starting to settle more into all her relationships.. and that's actually disappointing.

Although the 'story' was a bit different, the general idea is getting a little repetitive, and the 'magic' between the characters isn't quite so good.

However, Murder In Death looks hopeful.. I'm hoping it shakes Dallas up a bit! If not, the series needs to end before it goes down even more. And no mucking about.. let's see Dallas killed in the line of duty, and Roarke's grief! (Gosh, I'm evil sometimes! hehe)

One chapter into Memory In Death, and I'm already much happier.. I hope it continues.

Michelle

Memory In Death was MUCH better - I'm happy now!
(And I'll let Eve live a bit longer!)

I found Origin better after the disappointment of Survivor, but I have to agree with you, Michelle. The ideal of Dallas happy to have Roarke help her with investigating, and relaxing with friends, takes all the grit out of it. I liked the flawed Eve, who was so competent with one half of her life, and a complete drop-kick with the other.

Glad to hear a few positives coming re Memory. Must go and find, now I know it is out there.

Inanna
17th March 2006, 16:11
I love Roarke, he is great. Eve does get on my nerves alot, sometimes I think she is too tough, other times she's ok

Michelle
17th March 2006, 16:37
Andibody, great to hear from you! :friends:

Definitely go get Memory.. it was much better.. I'm now impatient for the next one.. and Mavis's baby!

Andibody
18th March 2006, 11:55
Has Mavis had the baby or is it going to take another book? :frustrated: Oh well, these things are sent to try us. I am just glad to hear the series is back on track. Something to look forward to.....the hunt of Memory. 8-)

Thanks Kell

BAsically it's because I have rec notice from the library that they are holding Ceremony IN Death...and was wondering if it is too down in the list!

Michelle

Mau, from what I remember, it should be ok. Give it a go.. the general storyline will be a contained story. Then if you like the style, get the first one ordered, and start from the beginning! :D

(And if anything confuses you, drop me a line!)

Maureen

Thanks Mich. Will try to pick it up Fri. Can't wait to read this, with your endorsements!!

I see she has another one out later on 'Born In Death'

I think, after reading 2 of the In Death series, that JD Robb is in love with "romance" the old fashioned way. Although Eve is portrayed as being tough and a go getter, Roarke is "the gentleman" who takes care of her, who is always a step ahead in everything and who makes "things better". I think JD Robb still hankers after the time where men and women had their "seperate roles" in life. Romance like the old black and white movies, but set in the future.

Michelle
10th May 2006, 18:37
I'm not sure I blame her - wouldn't it be nice to have a man who takes care of you (whilst still letting you be 'tough'), has lots of money, and is rather fantastic in bed?! ;)

Maureen
10th May 2006, 18:49
is rather fantastic in bed?! ;)

Now that is an understatement

...wouldn't it be nice to have a man who takes care of you

It is nice.

......but do you know what I mean?

Louiseog
10th May 2006, 20:08
i've read a few of these and agree, although it would be fantastic to live with someone like Roarke, he still is the one who always sorts everything out. Think that is why I got annoyed and felt they were a bit samey, because that is what always happens.

Michelle
10th May 2006, 21:27
I do agree.. but I enjoy other bits of the books, which means I enjoy reading them all.

Louiseog

Have read about five ! But think that's enough now. They are good stories and I love the world in which they live.

Maureen

I read two, and I felt they were quite similar as well.

Inanna

Well I've read every single one, and enjoyed them! So there! :tongue2:

I've just read the latest, Born In Death, and the 'sameness' is getting a little too much. The thing I love about the series is the characters, and their interactions, but even that was lacking. There was some good stuff about Mavis and her baby, but the rest was forgettable.

Either the series needs a big shake up, or it needs to finish.. as much as I would actually miss everyone.

My thought is that Ms Roberts is rushing her books out too quickly.

So has anyone read her very latest in death book? The one where the foster mom comes back to haunt her?

How was it?

The whole foster-parent thing is a theme NR uses constantly in her books. I didn't pick it up because I've read "it" in her books before.

Which one, Katherine? As far as I know, the next for release is Innocent In Death, around Jan / Feb time.

Oh, hang on.. do you mean Memory In Death? (I'm waking up a little now! hehe) I don't recall too many details, but it was better than the one before it, and certainly better than Born In Death.

This was my thought exactly for the Scarpetta novels. I would be sorry to see the end of them, but the last couple were really mediocre compared to the first books.

I read a couple of the "IN death" series, and I enjoyed them. (Some scenes make me laugh!)

Not sure which one, it came out in hardcopy this year -- beginning of this year...all that I recall of the plot was what i mentioned in the post above...I'll search on amazon for it.

Yep, Memory ID was released early 2006, and included Eve's foster mum. It's not the very latest though.. that was Born ID. :)

So Memory In Death on a 1-5...?

Michelle

Argh.. it was a while back now. Judging by the rest of the ID books, a 3-4. The ones either side were 2-3.

Have given up on these, too samey and much too much else to read

Michelle
2nd January 2007, 06:13
Well, I got addicted to them when I didn't have much else to read. Plus, although the crime stories etc do get samey, what caught me was the development of the characters, especially Eve and Peabody. But they have certainly gone downhill recently.. as I said earlier, I get the feeling she's rushing books out too quickly.

Have to agree, Michelle. Just finished Born ID and I really missed hearing about all of the characters that surround Eve & Rourke. The crimes are becoming predictable and I fear Ms Roberts is relying on her formula more than her imagination.

Maybe you're right about her being to busy. The pressure of being known as so prolific a writer is causing a quantity vs quality war. We'll see, I suppose. Shame if it stays the same....so many "people" she can work with....some of the past problem people from earlier books could re-emerge. Maybe we should begin our own. ;)

It's nice to see you back, btw.. I hope things are ok with you?
