I finished my first book of 2012 this morning - and my first Kindle book!

Broadmoor Revealed: Victorian Crime and the Lunatic Asylum by Mark Stevens

What a great book! This is (apparently) on of the top 10 fastest selling Kindle books ever - and it's easy to see why. It's only available in Kindle format at the moment, but maybe its sudden popularity will mean it gets a paper run too?

Proper review to follow - hopefully before too long as I've resolved to try to keep up to date with writing them in 2012! :giggle2:

This was my first kindle book too, and I really enjoyed it. It was really fascinating I thought and a brilliant freebie :D

Great minds, Laura! :D

I hope you enjoy it, Michelle. smile.gif I thought it was really interesting. One of the cases is that of Victorian artist Richard Dabb. He was featured on a programme Jeremy Paxman did on BBC1 a few years ago called 'The Victorians' about artists and art of that period, which was an excellent series, so it was nice to read a bit more about him.

Goodo - I hope you enjoy it. :)

Hubby and I have been tidying our study the last couple of days (well overdue - we were busting at the seams!). He found a WHS Giftcard on his desk, and I found a Waterstone's one in an old purse of mine, so we headed out today to see if there was any value on either of them!

He had £15 on the WHS one - he offered it to me but I'm trying not to buy any new books, so we're saving it to see if there is a DVD or something we want at some stage. He did use £2 to buy some Christmas cards in the sale with camels on (I love camels on cards!) because using it means it will now last another two years before expiry.

I then headed to Waterstone's and discovered that my card had £6.02 so I bought Burmese Days by George Orwell. When I say I did, hubby actually paid the difference so it was a freebie for me! :giggle2:

My book buying did reduce drastically in the last 5 months of 2011. I bought 31 books up to the end of July. After then I took out 8 library books and acquired 14 more books, but 3 were gifts, 3 were bought for ‘real life’ book club and 1 for the reading circle here (I like to annotate) 2 were borrowed from friends, 2 were bought for my decades challenge (and not available in library), 1 bought at Church Christmas fete (I thought if I had to buy something it might as well be a book!) and 2 were bought because I’ll re-read them.

I am going to try to buy fewer books this year! :D

Most of us are trying to buy less books this year .. it's a funny old resolution for avid book readers isn't it but I think it's the disparity between how many books we buy and how many we read that makes us feel a bit guilty and irresponsible (and really we're not to blame, books are .. I never have the same problem with chocolate .. if it comes in the house I eat it :D) But 50 TBR's is not that bad, I have double your amount  Now that the deccies have come down, I've started tidying and straightening and I've been looking at the books on my shelves and seeing that my book buying tendencies need curbing. There are definitely more than one or two that I know I'll probably never pick up (unless I'm experiencing a very long, dark, tea-time of the soul.) Quite a lot of them were the 3 in the 3 for 2's that Waterstones used to entice people with .. I never was able to find a satisfactory third.

What a result finding a Waterstones card with money on it, and I love your choice of book  (stop giving me ideas )

I've been looking through your TBR's .. I read Twopence to Cross the Mersey many moons ago .. oh I did love it and it did make me cry. Actually I must read it again (no really Janet, you must stop this :giggle2:)

The very best of love and luck in 2012 Janet :friends0:

:giggle2: That's true of cheese in my case. I can resist chocolate, but not that! (Or crisps!).

But 50 TBR's is not that bad, I have double your amount Now that the deccies have come down, I've started tidying and straightening and I've been looking at the books on my shelves and seeing that my book buying tendencies need curbing. I've just realised that I haven't yet listed the ones I bought back from my mother-in-law's house. There aren't as many as I thought, but I ought to add them to the list. :)

I know what you mean about the Waterstone's offer. The only time I really purchase from there is if I have a voucher (I don't tend to buy new books) but I could seldom find a third book. I'd have a list but find they were nearly always unstickered!

Sowwy! :giggle:

I know - I couldn't believe my luck! I just had to buy the Orwell. I've been 'saving' this one, so I might not read it for a while, but I needed it. It wasn't a want - it was a need - so it doesn't count in my 'not buying books' resolution! :P

I bought Twopence to Cross the Mersey as a potential 'real life' book club choice... but now I'm thinking of the Pigeon English one that (I think) you recommended. Decisions, decisions!

Incidentally, you mentioned ages ago wanting When God was a Rabbit, but being good and not buying it, but I've a feeling you have read it? If not, let me know and I'll send you mine as I won't re-read it.

The very best of love and luck in 2012 Janet :friends0:

And to you too.
