Janet
I always buy my husband's Uncle John a Christmas present. This year I thought I might make a change from the usual scarves/booze/biscuits scenario and buy him a book! I'm after something in the world of travel writing. I'd like it to be about the UK - I don't mind where, although he lives on the south coast in Bournemouth and he was born and lived in Kent until he was in his 60s, so either of those places would be good - but as I said, anywhere in the UK would do. I don't want to buy anything too mainstream (so no Bill Bryson, Michael Palin etc) just in case he already has them. Uncle John was a history teacher before retired and although he's now in his early 70s, he's still active in that field as he is a speaker at events (WI, corporate events...) and takes several history-based courses for his local U3A. He's a clever chap! Does anyone have any suggestions for me, please? Thank you.
chesilbeach
One I would recommend as I read it myself is Waterlog by Roger Deakin, and the other that my friend thought was wonderful is The Wild Places by Robert Macfarlane.

Mrlifeboat
My vote goes to Attention all shipping by Charlie Connelly. It's a travel book of the authors experiences whilst attempting to visit every area in the shipping forecast. A great read.
Janet
Thanks - I think I might read this one myself - it sounds like my cup of tea.
SueK
Hi Janet, I wonder if Uncle John may be interested in The Saxon Shore. I hail from Kent and I found it in the library some time back and it is very interesting. Saxon Shore
