The politics of the time were also interesting and as always with Kalogridis' books I realise how poor my Italian history is!! This book is set in the early years of the Restoration and demonstrates how former spys and prominant men switch their allegence to that of the King Charles II after the fall of Cromwell. It's a part of life that you don't really think about, and the characters are based on some real-life people. At over 600 pages it reacquainted me with James Herbert after a break of many years from him. I really quite enjoyed it although it only lasted a couple of days!
