Stealing the update idea from Frankie, heres mine biggrin.gif

Read

The Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien

That must be a relief, it's one hefty book :D

An interesting challenge Frankie - one I've only recently picked up from the posts on your reading thread. I'm tempted, but there's quite a lot on here that I've tried and really, really don't want to have to read (Samuel Richardson and Marcel Proust jump immediately to mind - I really do want to have a life!!): what are the rules (if any) about incompleted books?

Welcome willoyd :) To put it very frankly, it's one helluva challenge so I believe in the ”dealeth with the challenge as thou wishest thouself” -method  I fancy reading all the books on the list myself, but let's face it, I fear my days will be numbered way before I reach no 1001. I can promise I'll buy a cup of coffee, and maybe even a doughnut to anyone on the forum who manages to finish the challenge.

Haha, why am I not surprised that there are a few Woolfs amongst your most favored reads on the challenge?

The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy.

This takes my totals to 47 of the original 1001 list and 50 of the 1294 combined list!

How was The Mayor of Casterbridge? Was this not a serious contender in a nominations thread for some reading circle? Maybe the one that ended in the victory of Vanity Fair? I always thought TMoC might make a nice read.

wow I just had a quick look at the list and yeah I seen couple of them in a film but thats it! so looks like I have..... lets see... 1001 books to read still!!! oh well I am sure I will get there smile.gif

Hehe, I like your optimism! Welcome to tackle the challenge! :)

Whilst I'm not going to go for the full 1001 - there are seriously some books on here that I've tried but really don't want to drain my life away reading (I'm thinking of Proust as I write, which must have set a new record at how soon I wanted to throw the book at something) - it'll be fun keeping a track, and a help in finding new reading (at least new for me!).

So, which list is the one for the challenge? I'm assuming 2006, as that's the one set out at the start, and it's not been replaced at any stage.

A very recent discovery (past couple of years anyway), but what an impact!! She's sooooooo brilliant!

BTW, have just finished my 100th book on the list - Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides - a small but motivating milestone.

That's funny, because Proust is one of the authors I'm most looking forward to reading :D But I think that's also due to the fact that it's on the Rory Gilmore reading challenge and Proust is mentioned quite often in the series, the Gilmore Girls :)

So, which list is the one for the challenge? I'm assuming 2006, as that's the one set out at the start, and it's not been replaced at any stage.

Well I personally only have the 2006 list and because I started the thread, that's what I had to go with. I also own the book so personally I'm going with that and as they change too much over each new edition, I can't be bothered to try and adjust the list in the first post. If anyone wishes to provide the later editions (2008, 2010, I suppose they're going to come up with a new one next year?) they are definitely welcome to do it on this thread or in their own privacy :) There's this nifty website dedicated to the challenge where you can download all the different editions as spreadsheets on your computer, but I think they charge some small sum if you want all the different lists. Kylie knows more about that website than I do, if you have any questions you should ask her, or perhaps Janet :)

Wow, that's definitely a milestone! And 10% And what a great choice from the list too! :smile2:

I'm happy sticking to the 2006 list: I have the newer ones (there's a lite version which is free), but am not overly impressed with the books introduced compared to what was removed.

I do think the author choice could have been spread out more - there are a quite a few that could/should be on the list, whilst others are somewhat overloaded (and one or two make me wonder why they are included), but that's always the same with lists, and, indeed, half the fun!.

How was The Mayor of Casterbridge? Was this not a serious contender in a nominations thread for some reading circle? Maybe the one that ended in the victory of Vanity Fair? I always thought TMoC might make a nice read.

Yes, I nominated it when Vanity Fair won. :) I had TMoC on my 'to read' pile (it had been there some time, I think) and then Peter and I had a few days away, ending up in Dorchester (which is Casterbridge) so I read it then. I really enjoyed it. It's the first Hardy I've ever read but I thought it was great and I want to read more of his works now. :)

What an apt place to read the book in :D I saw the pics in the Literary Landmarks thread, beautiful shots! :)

I've only read one Hardy book, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, it was for an English lit course some (many) years ago. It's my most hated book ever :giggle: It was so weird because I really liked all the other English lit books in general (well apart from Tess and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie). But I know people who've loved Tess, so fear not. Who knows, maybe I would enjoy it too, on a second time round. And it hasn't put me off trying another Hardy.

I imagine Tess must be fairly hard-going. I remember watching the Roman Polanski (I think) version years ago - it was one of the first videos my parents rented on Betamax - and finding it rather dull, but the BBC did an excellent adaptation a year or two ago which I really enjoyed.

I'm not really inclined toward undertaking challenges as they give me the reading wobblies, and when I originally posted on this thread is was more out of astonishment then anything else. There are too many books on the list that I just do not want to read, so I think I will be keeping the list as a guide rather than a must read list.

*gulp*

776. The Ambassadors - Henry James

698. Mrs. Dalloway – Virginia Woolf

695. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd - Agatha Christie

686. To The Lighthouse – Virginia Woolf

656. Cakes and Ale - Somerset Maugham

So that's two *likes* already, vs the non-existent *dislikes* so far, the odds are looking good :)

Uh oh... :D Well at least it's a short book!

Heck, you've been really busy! How do you feel going over the 100 limit? Good? Not feeling overwhelmed by the thought that there are 9 more 100s to go? :giggle:

I'm not saying that it doesn't have it's dull moments, but I thought it was a great improvement on Tess :)

Uh oh... :D Well at least it's a short book!

I think he wrote in different styles ... hopefully What Maisie Knew will be one of his good ones. I was listening to a radio adaptation of The Turn of the Screw today and what I heard was gripping so I'm not writing him off as unreadable yet (he owes me mind you :D)

No :giggle2: I know there's some I'll never probably read but it's good to have a challenge, even if you do pick and choose.

I don't mind a few dull moments. But I'd say anything is a great improvement on Tess :D

I feel like I need to read The Ambassadors and see what it was like, I'm getting quite curious! :D But yes, do give him another chance if you have time, who knows :) Maybe his next book will make amends!

It's at least on the 2006 edition, the one that's listed on the first post of this thread. That's another one down for me as well :smile2:

Wow, congrats on making 100, Poppyshake! And Frankie, you're so close! I think I'm still 15-20 books away. I haven't updated my lists in ages, but while I've probably added loads to my TBR pile, I'm certain I haven't read many (or probably any).
