I am going to attempt to read at least 4 of my 'Long term world challenge', and to finish my 'Reading Through The Decades' challenge. If I finish the latter, I have another challenge in mind! Kylie
Feel free to post if you want to now. Don't mind if I do! I'm rather in awe that you list the cost of your books; that's a very brave thing to do. At first I thought there was no way that I could do that because it would be truly frightening, but perhaps I should do it as a sort of deterrent to stop me buying so many books. Hmm, something to ponder... We have such similar tastes in books that I'm looking forward to reading your reviews throughout the year. You must be nearly finished with George Orwell's complete works by now? Is Inside the Whale... the last one?
Janet
Hi Kylie I tend to buy most of my books in charity shops so listing prices is not as frightening as it might be! I've still to read one Orwell novel - Burmese Days, and one non-fiction - Homage to Catalonia and that's the 'full length' books completed. I have Inside the Whale and Other Essays and Decline of the English Murder and Other Essays on the shelf, but there are (I believe) other essay books too. I need to research those more as I'd like to read it all if I can. Thanks for commenting.
Ben
I've still to read one Orwell novel - Burmese Days, and one non-fiction - Homage to Catalonia and that's the 'full length' books completed. I've heard good things from a friend of mine about Homage to Catalonia so good luck with that one. Also best of luck in general over 2011 with your reading, I look forward to reading your thoughts and reviews on what you've read.
chesilbeach
I've got Homage To Catalonia on my TBR shelf, so hopefully I'll get round to it this year. I loved Down and Out in Paris and London but hated 1984, so I'm just sticking to Orwell's non-fiction, but I'm impressed that you've nearly read his entire works! Hope you enjoy your reading this year and can't wait to read your thoughts on the books Edited January 2, 2011 by chesilbeach

chesilbeach
I read it for my Sociology 'A' level about twenty years ago, and I remember it took me weeks to read, because I just didn't engage with it at all. I had to keep forcing myself to read it each day. But, like I said, I then read Down and Out in Paris and London a couple of years later, and found it completely engrossing. 1984 did put me off his fiction, but maybe I should try it again. Ah maybe that was because you had to read it for class; that can always make a book seem less enjoyable. I know it was the case when I read The Great Gatsby for English Literature last year. Let me know if you do try 1984 again. I've been thinking about trying some of his other stuff soon. Edited January 2, 2011 by Ben

Janet
Okay, I'm back home and can quote properly! I've heard good things from a friend of mine about Homage to Catalonia so good luck with that one. Also best of luck in general over 2011 with your reading, I look forward to reading your thoughts and reviews on what you've read. Thanks again, Ben. I think Homage to Catalonia might be one I buy with some of my Waterstone's voucher. I think I might do the essays after that and save Burmese Days until the end, as that's the last novel of his for me to read. I've got Homage To Catalonia on my TBR shelf, so hopefully I'll get round to it this year. I loved Down and Out in Paris and London but hated 1984, so I'm just sticking to Orwell's non-fiction, but I'm impressed that you've nearly read his entire works! Hope you enjoy your reading this year and can't wait to read your thoughts on the books I have to say that 1984 wasn't my favourite of his - I think it's thought provoking, but I definitely prefer his 'poverty-based' books. I enjoyed Down and Out in Paris and London too - it was one of my favourites. I also liked A Clergyman's Daughter, but I've a feeling you weren't so keen on that? The first part of The Road to Wigan Pier is similar to 'Down and Out...' Thanks again, Claire (and apologies for spelling your name wrong in the last post ). Janet
Thank you - and to you too. First book of 2011 is going to be The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson which I had for my birthday back in May. I'm still waiting for The Christmas Train by David Baldacci to arrive! A bit late now, but it's a 'book club' book so I will have to read it - I just hope it arrives soon as our first meeting is on 11 January! Janet
I forgot to post in my 2010 blog, but total money spent on books acquired in 2010 was £131.63. Not bad, because most of them were second-hand. First book bought in 2011 is The Christmas Train by David Baldacci! I was meant to read this in December for book club, but as we're not meeting until 18th January (moved from 11th January) I had been putting off buying it! It won't be very topical reading it in January, but hey-ho!
Janet
Oh dear - my 'I will not any books until I've reduced my to read pile' mantra isn't working! I bought Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell in Waterstone's today. In my defence, it is one I've been meaning to buy for ages and I bought it with my Christmas voucher so I didn't part with any money. Ooops! chesilbeach
Technically, I would say you didn't buy this book, it was a gift, just one you chose yourself. It definitely shouldn't count against you, and I'm pretty sure a good defence lawyer could argue against you having "bought" it, so you should not have any guilty feelings or think you've let yourself down in any way, Janet. You are hereby absolved of any responsibility for having increased your TBR pile.

Janet
I finished The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson today. A great start to 2011 - a definite 9/10 from me! Review here. Next up, The Christmas Train by David Baldacci
