I'm going to have to think long and hard before I answer them. This is really just an exercise to keep my brain going and stop me from falling into a freezing weather induced torpor, bought about by snow and lack of chocolate.

Your favourite read of the year?

A toss-up between The Child Thief by Brom and Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Your favourite author of the year?

It's a toss-up between Brom (for The Child Thief) and Margaret Mitchell (for Gone With the Wind)

Your most read author of the year?

Charlaine Harris

All ten of the Southern Vampires books.

Your favourite book cover of the year?

Return to Labyrinth vol 1 (graphic novel) by Jake T Forbes & Chris Lie

Stunningly beautiful artwork.

rtl13.jpg

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

A Pale View Of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro

I actually read about half of this "highly acclaimed debut" but gave up as it was so dull. (I've actually abandoned 6 books this year, but there are couple of them I'll go back to at some point in the future.)

The book that most disappointed you?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson

I actually abandoned this one half way through as I found it incredibly dull, didn't like any of the characters, and had worked out the "big reveal" within a couple of pages. Highly disappointing, especially as so many other people highly recommended it.

The funniest book you read this year?

I've not really read anything riotously funny this year. I've read a few that were supposed to be funny, but they didn't rate all that highly, so I have no nominations for this category.

Your favourite literary character this year?

Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Feisty, headstrong, wilfull and manipulative, but oh, so lovable!

Your favourite children's book this year?

The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Graham

Just gorgeous on every level. And I loved the illustrations too.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

Lauren Henderson - Jane Austen's Guide To Dating

I picked this up for a quid (hardback!) from the local pound shop and was absolutely delighted by the quirky idea of applying Jane Austen's rules of love to modern dating. It made perfect sense and was highly entertaining too!

Closely followed by Inside Delta Force by Eric L Haney

This was such a surprisingly good read. I really came to care about the men of Delta Force, and reading about their training processes, their missions, and the friendships they built was amazing.

Your favourite (auto)biography this year?

Buster Fleabags by Rolf Harris

Fun, quirky look at Rolf's life as a kid with a small dog called Buster Fleabags. Very short, but I liked it a lot.

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

I didn't read any

Your favourite poetry collection this year?

I didn't read any

Your favourite illustrated book of the year?

The Child Thief by Brom

I'm blown away by this man's talent, both as an artist AND a writer.

I love these types of threads! Thanks Poppyshake. :) And why am I not surprised to see you've included a question about favourite book covers? :giggle:

This is going to be incredibly hard. I kind of wish I hadn't read so many (great) books this year. I absolutely cannot limit certain categories to just one book. ;)

Your favourite read of the year?

Gone with the Wind, The Woman in Black, Atlas Shrugged, A Steroid Hit the Earth, To Kill a Mockingbird (re-read), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Cloudstreet, Falling Up, Flowers for Algernon.

Your favourite author of the year?

Sylvia Plath, LM Montgomery, Jasper Fforde, Italo Calvino, Harper Lee, Shirley Jackson, Susan Hill (interesting that my favourite authors don't necesarily correspond with my favourite reads ).

Your most read author of the year?

Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse series) and Kathryn Kenny (Trixie Belden series). I've read 7 of each, soon to be 8 of each.

Your favourite book cover of the year?

Uncle Montague's Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley.

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

I never abandon books, but I think I need to rethink that policy for next year.

The book that most disappointed you?

How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff, Vlad by CC Humphreys and Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg.

The funniest book you read this year?

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome, A Steroid Hit the Earth by Martin Toseland, and all the Wodehouse books I read.

Your favourite literary character this year?

Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind, LM Montgomery's Anne Shirley, Charlie from Flowers for Algernon, and PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster.

Your favourite children's book this year?

The House at Pooh Corner by AA Milne and all the LM Montgomery and Shel Silverstein books I read. All utterly charming! Oh, and Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and Other Stories and The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

A Steroid Hit the Earth by Martin Toseland. A book full of typos in print. I howled until I cried with laughter. And my current read, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath. Utterly brilliant.

Your favourite biography this year?

Hmm, I haven't read any biographies, but could I count Plath's journals as a sort of autobiography?

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

I guess I could cheekily count Italo Calvino's If On a Winter's Night a Traveller, along with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Chris Priestley's Uncle Montague's Tales of Terror, Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and Other Stories and any Wodehouse collection.

Your favourite poetry collection this year?

Shel Silverstein's Falling Up and A Light in the Attic.

Your favourite illustrated book of the year?

The Plucker by Brom.

Thanks Kylie, of course book covers are important ... the amount of books that I haven't read because I can't find a version with a tolerable cover is ridiculous .. or at least it was until I discovered the library. I don't seem to mind borrowing books with uninspiring covers I just can't have them ruining my shelves

Of course, you cheated bigtime .. I know I did but you've taken it to a whole new level ... nine books in your favourite read category!!! I'm really annoyed because I haven't read six of them and now they must go on my list :D

Book covers have become more and more important to me in the last couple of years. I used to buy any old book, but now I'm much more discerning. :)

Sorry about the cheating, but I just couldn't choose one! I swear I tried to narrow it down. Usually I would include all books I rated 9 or 10 out of 10, but I restricted myself to those that only received full marks. :D

I'm glad that I can finally repay the favour since you have been responsible for adding so many books to my own TBR pile and wish list! In fact, at least 4 of the books I'm awaiting in the post are directly a result of your reviews. :)

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

In all fairness I've abandoned a fair few books this year, but it wouldn't be fair to post them because none were because the book was bad.

Your favourite literary character this year?

Why none other than Dorian Gray; mysterious, thought-provoking and intriguing without question.

I'm afraid they're the only one's answerable for me this year; though this is a great thread poppyshake.

Thanks Ben, not to worry. You've been busy with your studies which is far more important. You can't do much leisure reading when you're studying because it's a well known fact that your head will cave in so you've done the sensible thing :D
