  1. 1. How do you percieve the Fantasy genre?

    • A valid and wonderful part of English Literature.
    • Good for escapism, but little else.

    • Utter rubbish.

Hi there, I was wondering if I could enlist the help of the wonderful members on this forum. I am carrying out a project based on the fantasy genre's position within English literature, and I need the opinion of seasoned readers such as yourselves.

I have always been a fan of the genre, hence I chose it as the theme for my research project, and I wish to see (and hopefully use) the data I could gather from this site. I am aware that this may be better posted in the fantasy section of this site, but I fear if I post this thread there I will get a biased opinion.

Also some of you may want me to define what I exactly mean by fantasy. In this respect, I mean fantasy works such as the likes of Tolkien and Lewis, all the way to recent authors such as Phillip Pullman and J.K Rowling.

As you can probably see, I have a poll for you to answer if you so wish, or if you could write something expressing your opinion, that would be good as well. Please bear in mind however, if you do write an opinion down I will assume you will consent to it being used in my project as data.

Many thanks,

Andaer.

I voted for it being a valid and wonderful part of English Literature, but then I might be a little biased. It's my favourite genre, and I believe fantasy is a great way to explore human nature and show it in a different light.

I'm also going to be doing a 'Fantasy and Fandom' module as part of my degree after Christmas. I'll be looking at the development of fantasy literature from 'Beowulf' and 'Le Morte Darthur' right through to Neil Gaiman. I'm very excited about it.

We are a friendly community of readers here, and although we are often happy to help with member's queries, we are not a resource for school/college/Uni work for people who are soley using us as such, and who have not taken the time to become active members.

I am therefore closing this thread and ask you to take a little time to read our rules and guidelines regarding the forum, before posting again.

Thank you.
