Raven
Something to watch whilst Michelle is ironing out the bugs in the new forum . . . (kidding!). The new Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat scribed BBC One series Sherlock will air on Sunday 26th July at 9pm. The first feedback on it is that it is very good indeed, let's hope so! Janet
Ooh, thanks for that. I saw a while ago on the BBC press release site that it was coming up, but it didn't say when. I can't wait. Anyone famous in it?
chesilbeach
It looks brilliant! There a trailer and a short interview clip with the two writers here ETA: Sorry meant to mention, Holmes is played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Watson by Martin Freeman
Janet
Thanks Ches. Martin Freeman - he was in Love Actually, wasn't he? I liked him in that - he seems sweet! I haven't heard of the other man though. </Googles> It looks excellent! The other guy is a bit tasty!
Coffin Nail
Really looking forward to this. Mark Gatiss is one of my favourite writers, he has a very macabre sense of humour, likes his Victoriana so I'm expecting darkness. I read his novel The Vesuvius Club a couple of years ago. Anyone else read it?
chesilbeach
Yes, I read it and loved it. There are two subsequent Lucifer Box books as well, The Devil In Amber and Black Butterfly both are excellent!

Ruth
Really looking forward to this. Mark Gatiss is one of my favourite writers, he has a very macabre sense of humour, likes his Victoriana so I'm expecting darkness. I read his novel The Vesuvius Club a couple of years ago. Anyone else read it? I read TVC earlier this year and really liked it. I have The Devil in Amber and Black Butterfly on my tbr. I'll enjoy watching Sherlock:)
Fi.
Is this the adaptation that's set now and Dr Watson has just come back from Afghanistan or somewhere like that???
chesilbeach
It's definitely a modern day adaptation, but don't know much more about it than that.
Ophelia
It's definitely a modern day adaptation, but don't know much more about it than that. Oh dear! That worries me a tad but I'll still be tuning in. Got to give it a chance!

SueK
I have to say I'm quite looking forward to this. I'm a fan of Mark Gatiss (got his Lucifer Box series which I intended to tackle shortly)who, in turn is a great Sherlockian - and I feel that some intelligence would have gone into the making of this (I still can't bring myself to see the film with RD Jnr). Kell
Did anyone else watch this tonight? Dale and I watched it and were very pleasantly surprised - we BOTH loved it! I was especially pleased to see they kept to the spirit of the originals, even going so far as to have Watson invalided back to Blighty after being shot in Afghanistan (yes, the original Dr Watson was shot there too, and in a military capacity as well!). Now very much looking forward to watching the 2nd episode next Sunday night, and episodes 3 and 4 the following Sundays. I hope they do more of them as well! Raven
Very good, I shall make sure I've finished cooking and eating before it starts next week so I'm not distracted! Bad news Kell, there are only 3 episodes in total.
Kell
Argh! I read somewhere that there were four episodes! Now I'm all upset! Still, I hope they'll make more of them as 3 will clearly not be enough...
Kell
Has anyone had a look at the Science Of Deduction site that's been set up as part of the Sherlock stuff? There's a mystery to solve on there. At the moment, we have a coded message: DSPCWZNV T LX HLENSTYR JZF And a clue: A Roman Emperor will help you work out what this means. Anyone got any ideas? Janet
We LOVED it too! Can't wait for next week. The casting was excellent! Kell - they did make four because they made an unaired pilot episode but apparently it won't be shown. Pity.
Kell
Ah, that explains why I saw the number 4 being bandied about. Thanks.
Janet
My hope its that perhaps they'll put the pilot on the DVD. I read somewhere that they were so happy with the pilot in terms of characterisation and acting, but felt that the story wasn't quite right, but I can't find where I read it now! pickle
I am glad others enjoyed it, I certainly did, there were elements of the original story and characters but they worked it well into the modern setting. I liked his brother Mycroft thought that was quite funny.
Kell
Dale was convinced that Mycroft (before we found out who he was) was Professor Moriarty and had even convinced himself that his car's license plate, which featured the letters "TPM",was significant and stood for "The Professor Moriarty", which I thought was quite clever of him to come up with, so he was miffed he was wrong, but I was delighted at Mycroft's inclusion! ETA: I'm rather tempted to look for my copy of Sherlock Holmes stories and give them a good reread asap. I know I have a hardback copy of The Return Of Sherlock Holmes on my shelves somewhere... I'm pretty sure I'll have others too if I look for them!
Kate
I loved Sherlock! My hubby and I really enjoyed it - best TV I've seen in a while. I actually found it quite funny
SueK
I really enjoyed this last night. I though Benedict Cumberbatch played Sherlock in the cold calculated manner we expect and John Watson was suitably human. I liked the link with Afghanistan (as the original Watson was there too and was sent home with injuries received during the war). I loved Mrs Hudson! I thought Lestrade was suitably stupid and was also of the belief that we had met Moriarty rather than Mycroft. The only thing missing is the Victorian Gaslight and London Fog. Great stuff and look forward to the next episodes. Btw, it didn't stop me watching Brett in The Speckled Band this morning on ITV3 Edited July 26, 2010 by SueK
