This is a book that's been on my shelf for years, and I'd never gotten round to it until now. It's a really old copy too.

'The novel is a grim tale of adultery, murder and revenge in a nightmarish setting. A thriller and as L.W. Tancock says in his introduction, a cautionary tale on the sixth and seventh commandments, this early novel of Zola's is full of black macabre poetry which has kept its tragic power for over a century'.

I really loved this book. It's imagery played on my mind in a way that few modern novels do. It's like Irvine Welsh in 19th Century France.

The novel caused a furore when it was first published and was accused of being pornographic and I can still see why.

If its on your tbr list. Bump it up.
