MichaelD
Hello everyone. My name's Michael, I thought I should say hi and make my introductions. To be honest I can't quite believe I haven't joined a book forum before, but here we are. I've got a respectable 'to be read' pile of about 40 books (actually several piles scattered around my room) but I'm always on the lookout for something interesting so I thought I would join up and see if I can find some good suggestions. I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, and once I get stuck into a book I tend to devour it in fairly short notice - sometimes I think I should make an effort to read more slowly and savour a book, but I guess I'm just impatient! Reading quickly does have its benefits though - I've just finished the latest Robert Jordan book (well, Brandan Sanderson/Robert Jordan) after having re-read the first 11. Again. That's 800+ pages each, so it was good to be able to get through them quickly! Although I will happily try pretty much any book if someone recommends it, I tend to gravitate towards sci-fi and fantasy as I can really lose myself in them. Some of the longer series feel almost like home to me now, which can be really comforting when you want a little escapism. Discworld is a great example of this, especially with Pratchett seeming to delight in revealing so many beautiful new characters and storylines of late. It's good to get some variety however, so I try to intersperse a few more serious books in amongst the general run - I'm partway through Richard Dawkins' latest (I hasten to add, I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but the man's fascinating) and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into The Rest Is Noise, a hefty tome covering the history of the 20th Century as heard through music. Er, I've rather talked more than I had planned - I do tend to ramble. Anyway, briefly - my other obsession is music, which I spend most of every day either playing or listening to. From traditional folk, through country, blues, pop and rock upto scary angry metal, I listen to pretty much anything and everything. I'd say my perfect day would be sitting at home on a sunny day with a good book and a great album - such as a beautiful day I once spent whilst at university reading Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov and listening to Polly Paulusma...instead of doing any work! So I'll finish now (finally). I'm sure you'll hear from me plenty, I'm looking forward to swapping suggestions and getting all of your opinions on some of my favourite reads. I hope everyone's having fun and enjoying the first day of 2010! Thanks everyone. Michael

BigWords
That is one of the finest introductions I've read in a while. I do tend to ramble. Ramble on. Really, it makes a change from being on certain forums where the most I can expect is a string of letters and numbers which approximate the English language in only the most base and loose manner. It's something to appreciate when I read a clever and interesting post.

:HerculeHastings:
Hello and welcome, MichaelD! I'm sure you'll have fun here, and it's good to meet fast readers. I used to be pretty speedy when I was a child, but lately I've decided to read more slowly so that I won't finish good books too quickly, hehe.
