Michelle
They’re so sorry… They’ve made a terrible mistake… There’s nothing they can do… They have to take your daughter away… You have three weeks to say goodbye. Nine months after adopting their daughter, Jack and Melissa receive a phone call from the adoption agency, telling them that the baby’s father wants her back. They reveal that he never actually signed away his parental rights, and now he’s come forward, there is nothing they can do. This makes for an interesting start to a book, and in the hands of different authors, I could imagine it taking many different paths. Three Weeks To Say Goodbye is a thriller, so instead of exploring the legal and emotional issues, it takes a different turn. It appears that the baby’s father isn’t actually that interested, and it’s the grandfather who’s pushing for the child – and John Moreland is a well connected federal judge, who will stop at nothing to get his own way. Most of the action, however, takes place outside the court. Jack realises that he can’t fight this the usual way, and so in his desperation, looks for alternatives. He’s helped by two loyal friends, and Cody soon became my favourite character. For me, this made a welcome change to the usual crime thrillers – the main character isn’t a detective or policeman, but rather a travel development specialist! It shows the extremes a father could go to, although they are probably a little more violent than most would manage. There’s also a deeper story to uncover – the reason for Judge Moreland’s obsession is what makes this a thriller. Recommended for crime fans looking for something a little different! Mysterioso
Pretty much in agreement with Michelle on this one. I had to read this for a publisher and once I got over the obvious comparisons to Linwood Barclay/ Harlan Coben this was a pretty good read. Plenty of twists and turns and a good pacey plot... Michelle
Apparently it is based in an experience of a friend. Hopefully I'll have an interview up soon with more info!
Vanity Fair
I'm really getting into C.J Box! My friend works in publishing and was really recommending this to me. I wouldn't really say I was into thrillers but I enjoyed this one enormously and have already asked my mate to get me his next one, BLUE HEAVEN, when it comes out!! You can see why Box is so big in America, and I hope people will pick up on it here. Its pacey and exciting, I think what I loved was that the characters weren't arse kicking Brooklyn cops etc- they were ordinary people thrown into a horrendously trying situation. And they weren't driven by hate or revenge or trying to stop evil, but by love for their daughter and the sense of whats right. Im going to ask my friend if its based on a true story! Michelle
The interview is here.. http://bookclubforum.wordpress.com/2009/12/18/cj-box-interview/ Apparently it is based on a true story, although Box doesn't really elaborate. Darren
Hi I'm new, looking to get started. I've just completed Three Weeks to Say Goodbye by CJ Box and I loved it. Very much in the Linwood Barclay/Harlan Coben mould. Highly recommended.... "What if your recently adopted daughter was about to be taken away by the genetic father who never signed away his parental rights?" Has anyone read anything else by him and are they as good as this??
